Does McCown keep the job? (1 Viewer)

Will McCown remain the starter until Russell signs and takes over? How did he look yesterday? (Heard he injured his hand on the last play of the game, no reports on that yet).

I have Russell in dynasty and my other QBs are ... well, pathetic. So my main concern would be whether you think he played well enough to keep C-Pep on the bench.

Even if Russell signs today, I can't imagine him contributing much at all IF ANY this season. Holding out hopes that Russell will help your team at any point this season seems like a waste of time.

I thought he played pretty well. The question is, what did he do to his hand on the final play? Is it a serious injury?

I think he did enough to start another week, but not enough to lock up the job for the season. Pending his finger of course.

I think you missed the point of the question. This is a dynasty league, and I'm not asking about what Russell's value is. I'm simply looking for some reactions about how McCown played and whether he is likely to keep the starting job until the time comes for Russell to take the reins, or whether Culpepper will figure into this mess as well.

His stat line was good - 30/40 for 313 yards, 2 TDs and 2 INTs - but this was the Detroit secondary. Since I hadn't seen the game, I was just trying to get a sense of how he looked. Did he look comfortable?

The injury does concern me, and we haven't heard much about it.

And as for my specific team, I'm in a rebuilding year, but trust me when I say that McCown would be an upgrade for me. I'm riding with Huard as my starting QB right now :(

Update - oh, I just noticed the game recaps are up now. A little lighter in content than I remember them in the past, but here's what they had to say:

In a losing effort, McCown put up respectable fantasy numbers, going over 300 yards and throwing two touchdowns. His three fumbles (two lost) and two interceptions, including one late in the fourth quarter while trying to manufacture the game winning drive, might still make the Raider Nation yell for Daunte Culpepper to start.

I think most Raider fans expect Daunte sooner rather than later.

I think they wanted McCown in there because he wouldn't turn it over like Culpepper is prone to do. 2 INTs and 3 fumbles (2 lost) later, that tune could change. I haven't heard anything about a hand injury, though.

I really don't see Russell signing and taking over this year, it's way too late for him. He'll be the starter in 2008, but I think it's between Culpepper and McCown this year.

But will they get it? I was a bit shocked that McCown was named the starter. He did a little better than I thought he would, but I think Culpepper would have been better.

So do most Raider fans, but Culpepper was a very late addition to the team. And McCown did okay in the preseason. Not as good as Pepp, but I could see both sides of the argument. I think McCown being there since minicamp sealed it.Might be a moot point, as I just got a rumor passed on that Pepper is starting week 2, because McCown has a broken finger.

;) I have both. Before McCown was named starter, I figured Pepp would get it and I could let McCown go. When McCown got it, I knew I had to hang on to both.

This is the only mention I can find so far to possibly support the broken finger idea ... from the SJ Merc:"McCown sustained a sprained index finger on his right (throwing) on the last play of the game. He said, "I'm fine," when asked about it afterward. His actions in the locker room suggested otherwise."

I'd be pleased to see Culpepper take over.

On a bit of a tangent, why are Raiders fans pulling for Culpepper so much? Weren't you guys burned enough already by a former Vikings stud? :whoosh: He's really looked downright awful the past two seasons - and it's not all injury related. Do you remember how bad he looked 2 yrs ago before the injury??

I thought McCown looked pretty good at times. The fumbles were not really his fault. He was engulfed by Shaun Rogers on that last one. Bad protection there. But the INT's were poor throws on his part. I think Culpepper would probably be the better fit for this team if he has his mobility back. But McCown did perform admirably. Janikowski was the goat of that game.

We aren't. We are pulling for whoever can win games. Culpepper and McCown had similar numbers in the preseason, but Culpepper got them in the endzone. I don't think many Raider fans thought Culpepper was the savior. He just got cut from the Dolphins, for crying out loud. But the fact is, everytime we have seen him, he has looked good. Very good, actually.

I thought McCown looked pretty good, but the big issue for Oakland is the offensive line. Detroit was getting a lot of pressure and McCown made some good dump-offs, but against other teams there isn't going to be someone open every play.

McCown should get a couple more starts.

He was good enough yesterday...not great.

Oakland didn't lose that game because of him...the 'vaunted' Oakland pass defense takes the blame for that.

I'm still waiting to hear about the finger. I'll update when/if anything is released. At least in the league that I'll need him I'll know if anyone is bidding on him...

Kiffin didn't seem to sound concerned about the finger, it sounds like the Raiders will go with mCCown again.

And still, no signing for Russell?

From KFFL:

Raiders | Russell may be placed on PUP list

Tue, 11 Sep 2007 15:30:49 -0700

Adam Schefter, for NFL.com, reports the Oakland Raiders may place QB JaMarcus Russell on the Physically Unable to Perform list because of his delayed signing. If the team does not place him on the PUP list, the Raiders will likely ask for a two-week roster exemption for Russell.
Either way it looks like we won't be seeing Russell before Week 6.

Not that I expected him before week 6 regardless, but I DO think he'll play towards the end of this year. Probably of no fantasy relevance, but I tend to think they want to get him some game experience late in the year so they're not starting from scratch next year.

Nobody talking about the fractured finger on McCown's throwing hand and Culpepper taking over? Hmmm....I thought he might be a good pick up.
