Donald Brown value for rest of season? (1 Viewer)

I'm looking to fill out my roster as the roster deadline approaches.

Do you see any value in Donald Brown in weeks 13-16 if the Colts clinch home field (i.e. will they rest Addai.... or at least reduce his carries?

From Polian's show:

"The statistics aren't there, but he's having a terrific year," Polian said regarding Addai Monday on his weekly radio show on Hank 97.1 FM in Indianapolis.

Polian said Addai's value to the Colts extends far beyond statistics, and into the intricacies of a complex offense.

"People say, 'Well, Joseph has slowed down,' or, 'Joseph isn't what he used to be,''' Polian said of Addai, who rushed for more than 1,000 yards in 2006 and 2007 and made the Pro Bowl in the latter year. "Try picking up five blitzes a game on [Ravens MLB] Ray Lewis and see how much you have left in your legs. It's very difficult to do and that's a critical part of our offense.

"We block with the running back a lot of times. That's what allows [Colts quarterback] Peyton [Manning] to hit those big plays to the running backs and tight ends. Joseph does a magnificent job of it."

But Polian said Addai's value isn't just in blitz pickup. Polian said while Addai has yet to have a 100-yard game this season, he is running well within the parameters of the Colts' offense.

"Joseph is running as well as he ever has run in some holes that are not very big," Polian said. "When a linebacker has to take on a running back in a two-foot area, the advantage is to the linebacker. When he has to take on a running back in a six-foot area, the advantage is to the running back. Joseph has been running in a lot of two-foot areas. He has done a heck of a job banging in there, finishing runs. He really has done a remarkable job.

"He's averaging 3.5 yards per carry, which is not great, but his runs have been significant. They've resulted in touchdowns. He's running hard. He's moving the chains. . . . The bottom line is Joseph has been running great, as has [rookie running back] Donald Brown. Donald needs to get a few more carries as time goes by."
Reading the entire interview, it doesn't seem like Brown will see a ton of time on the field. A few more carries, I could see maybe 6-7 carries a game, unless it's a blowout. Addai is pretty locked in as the #1 RB now. I wouldn't be surprised to see him re-signed and stay the starter.

I know the coach said the yards aren't there but he is running well,,,but, RBs do not long remain starters in this league when their yard per carry is so abysmal, now two years in a row. Addai is the starter the rest of this year because the team is winning despite him, but I don't see him as the starter next year unless he really improves his production down the stretch. This situation will be similar to Baltimore's with Ray Rice and McFadden.

Ridiculous. Addai has been playing lights out -- in a contract year, it figures he would. I still think Brown becomes the primary ball carrier as early as Week 15 if Addai gets dinged in the slightest. It behooves the Colts to keep him fresh and healthy for the playoffs.

Addai has how many TDs? Hard to say the team is winning despite him. As for his YPC, it's actually been pretty decent the last few games. He averaged 4.5, 4.1, 3.9 in the last three games, and the last game was against BAL which is allowing 3.5 YPC against. He averaged 5.3 versus MIA, and 4.8 against ARI. His season YPC doesn't look great, but he's been running better than his overall YPC would indicate.

P.S. I'm sure you meant McGahee, not McFadden.

Addai is signed through 2010 season. It's not a contract year, next year is. He signed a 5 year contract in '06.

Addai is really playing well right now. Sometimes stats don't tell the whole story - he's making plays every week now. Addai has earned his playing time this season.

I can't see Brown replacing Addai until there is some sign that Indy is comfortable with Brown in the passing game, and right now they are hardly throwing to him at all, particularly compared to the number of time they throw to Addai. This is looking like a lost year for Brown, relative to the other first and second round rookie RB.
