Donald Rumsfeld 1932-2021 (1 Viewer)

This was a very complicated figure, and a very important one for American history. Whatever his flaws there is no denying he was a great patriot who proved his bravery during 9/11.
RIP

I was going to make a joke about the afterlife being the ultimate "known unknown," but Rumsfeld got way too flak for a pretty thoughtful bit of introspection.  In hindsight, it would have been good if somebody had stopped and pointed out "Hey, wait a second -- we actually have no idea whether the Iraqis will embrace democracy or if they'll use this as an opportunity to settle centuries-long blood feuds by murdering their neighbors."  You have to think that classifying that as a known unknown might have colored how we approached the post-war occupation.

Regardless, RIP.

Didn’t always agree with him politically…but he served this country there as well as in the Navy…respect for that.
RIP

RIP sir.

Years ago, I served on the board of a non-profit that was founded by Donald Rumsfeld and his wife.  It was an outdated but well intentioned organization in the education space.   A number of other board members were close friends of the Rumsfelds.   It gave me a different impression of him than the one I had from politics and media.

I think there are parallels here between Rumsfeld and Robert McNamara. Two highly capable men responsible for deeply flawed decisions, yet well intentioned.
