Dontarrious Thomas - New Man in the Middle? (1 Viewer)

What's the word on this guy talent-wise, and any indication he'll be an every-down guy? I have Leber now who was a nice plug-in last week.

I used to like Dontarrious a few years ago but he never panned out. He's now 28 and been unsigned since the 49ers released him before the season began. Even when he did play he didn't really produce much. In 4 years, he played in 56 games, had 97 solos, 30 assists, 2 sacks, 2 forced fumbles and 2 pass defends. Nothing to get too excited about if you ask me.

I doubt Leber and Greenway come off the field at all
I believe Leber will eventually slide back to the weakside with Nap Harris taking the spot in the middle, at the very least, it would seem to me that Harris would at least take snaps away from Leber if not all of them in the nickel as he has much better range to cover the deep middle of the field.

Neither Thomas, nor Napoleon Harris who was signed today, are every-down players in this defense. Thomas has been an NFL and IDP tease at points during his career, but has never put together a full package of speed, instincts and tackling. He's had some pretty nice openings in Minnesota and San Francisco over the past few seasons that he wasn't able to take advantage of.Thomas has the speed to handle the middle in the Vikings scheme, but not the coverage ability or instincts. Harris has a little speed, but not enough, and even worse instincts. Neither have much IDP value, even against a decent matchup like the Bears.

Leber is a reasonably underrated player. When the discussion was Leber vs Greenway, most thought that Greenway was the guy, but Leber held his own in that competition. Harris has never translated his straight line speed to the playing field and his instincts aren't very good. He won't play ahead of either OLB in the nickel.

 Both Leber and Greenway are the 3 down LB. Not Harris or Thomas.
