D'Qwell Jackson possible torn pec - may be Serious (1 Viewer)

Who's his backup? Potential stud on the wire?
who knows? the Browns have a ton of players with OLB/ILB versatilityI would say David Bowens and Chris Gocong both get bumps if its curtains for Jackson, maybe even Fujita and Veikune, less likely, but still in the picture, Barton and Maiava

Now MIA beat writer Jeff Darlington is saying that he is hearing NOT torn, maybe not serious, awaiting MRI - Darlington said Jackson was a high school friend of his.

Non-Dolphins related, but I hear D'Qwell's pectoral is not torn. Might not be that serious. He's waiting on a MRI to determine extent.

Love this guy's heart, but there's a reason he didn't get the contract he was looking for - he can't stay healthy.

Cleveland Plain Dealer speculating 4-8 weeks but says that Jackson is getting his own second opinion. Jackson's surgeon (who performed the surgery on his "other" torn pec) will be checking the Browns' MRI to see if it's right or if Jackson needs surgery (likely season-ending)(again).

Bracie Smathers was suggesting earlier in the off season that Matt Roth might have a shot in case of an injury. Not sure that I have seen anything about him elsewhere though

Jackson must have weak pecs or something to injure one of them in consecutive years.

Roth IS going to start on the strong-side but he will be moved all over the place.I thought it was common knowledge but it hasn't taken so far on the IDP board so I collected a compilation of tidbits directly from Mangini's mouth extolling praise on Matt Roth and trust me, Mangini doesn't praise hardly any starters so these comments are significant:

(On what Matt Roth’s brought since joining the Browns) -- “Matt’s a beast. He is strong, he’s tough, he’s relentless and we had to deal with that in New York when he was in Miami and it was painful to deal with it. When he became available, it’s nice to have him and let other people deal with him. He doesn’t get fazed by anything, he is just going to attack the same way, play-in and play-out and it’s a nice trait and it’s contagious.”

OLB Matt Roth. “He’s really good against the run. We want ‘em to run to that side.”

(On what he has learned about Matt Roth and if he tries to learn about his players personally)- “I try to get to know them on a personal level not to necessarily try and figure them out, but just because I think that helps build the relationship. In getting to know Matt outside of the things that we all see, his inherent toughness and things like that. In the meeting last night, I really like the way that he’s gotten more and more involved in the meetings. He asked multiple questions last night in the meeting. I was in the linebacker room and I thought he did a really good job with that. He’s got a great relationship with the other players. He knows David Bowens, they have got a history together. That room is pretty tight, that group of linebackers are pretty tight, and he fits right in. They are all a little bit different personality-wise, but they just all seem to mesh really well.”

(On Roth being a very intense person)- “Yes, he is intense in conversation and he’s intense in the way that he plays, but I think there’s a lot of guys that are like that. It’s not like he’s always high strung in every meeting. He’s got a pretty funny side and he’s got a really good way with the other players.”

That is just what I've found over the last two weeks. Don't pencil it in but chisel it in stone, Matt Roth is the SSLB starter for the Cleveland Browns this year!

New development is that Marcus Bernard is making a strong case to start on the weakside.

Hard-working Marcus Benard closing in on starting linebacker role for Cleveland Browns

BEREA, Ohio -- The Browns selected linebackers in the second and fourth rounds of Eric Mangini's 2009 draft, but the player making the biggest strides is one they did not draft.

Marcus Benard, signed last year as an undrafted free agent out of Jackson State, is navigating his way through a crowded position group. After leading the Browns in tackles in the Green Bay game, Benard was promoted to the No. 1 defense this week in practice.

The reconfigured linebacker alignment in the wake of D'Qwell Jackson's pectoral injury has Scott Fujita moving inside to join Chris Gocong, and Matt Roth and Benard at the outside spots. This grouping essentially replaces Eric Barton's smarts with Benard's speed.
Eric Barton originally was put in to replace D'Qwell Jackson but he looked, well, kinda rusty after landing on IR last year and he just doesn't seem as stout as the other LBers. Now the starting configuration is:

WSLB - Marcus Bernard

ILB- Chris Gocong

ILB - Scott Fujita

SSLB - Matt Roth

Roth has been the only listed starter not to change from the start.

The staff inked Fujita in free agency and traded for Gocong and had to configure them into the scheme so both have bounced from inside to outside/outside to inside. Roth has always been listed as the SSLB. I mentioned Bernard way back but Gocong got buzz in mini-camp and it appeared, prior to D'Qwell Jackson's injury, that Bernard would split time with Gocong on the outside and Fujita would take one of the ILB positions next to D'Qwell Jackson.

The coaches will also mix in the backups-

- Jason Trusnic (nice size that allows the staff to move him around and he showed decent pass rush moves last year)

- David Bowens (he got used a-lot last year both inside and outside when injuries took down Barton and Jackson and he played great but he's older and they are saving his legs in camp. He is most definitely in the mix.)

- David Veikune (last year's second round draft choice who many are down on but honestly the Browns are LOADED at LB and even though Veikune came into camp 20 lbs lighter and even STRONGER than he was last year, he's a beast, he simply can't beat out any of the vets in front of him but its not because he's horrible. He simply hasn't got a chance right now with the veteran talent in front of him.)

- Kaluka Maiava (fourth round draft pick from last year who is undersized and got into coverage packages and that seems to be his role going forward)

Once D'Qwell comes back he should re-take his starting job unless his pec continues to be an issue, last year he tore his left pec and he just tore his right one but not as bad as his left last year. But once he is back then I think he will start along at one ILB position and that either Fujita or Gocong will be the other ILB starter and then either Fujita or Gocong will move outside to split with Bernard. Roth has been a rock and will be the other start at SSLB.

i have both roth and bernard in a league. i've been following the camp developments at the LB position closely. everything that bracie is suggested is consistent with what i have been reading.
