Looking forward to seeing which calls wind up being right.

Eric Galko with a bunch of Hot Takes:

Just a week away from the 2015 NFL Draft, and there’s still much to dissect about where player values lie, which positions they’re targeting, and what teams could be looking to move up or down in the draft process.

Marcus Mariota’s destination, options for the Titans, Randy Gregory’s fall, second tier quarterback landing spots, Miami (FL) prospect value and surprise first-round contenders all discussed as teams begin to solidify their draft weekend plans.

-While Jameis Winston is all but locked in for the first-overall pick, Marcus Mariota’sdestination isn’t as clear. As of now, three scenarios appear to be in play. First, the Chargers and Titans are still working through a deal in which Phillip Rivers is traded for Mariota and an addition pick, which at this point seems like the most likely.

-If a Chargers trade doesn’t occur, the fourth overall pick seems like the next possible spot, as the Browns and Jets both are in the mix. The Browns may be willing to package both their first-round picks to get Mariota, but dropping down to the teens may not be worth it for the Raiders, as they’ll likely miss out on the top-three receivers and Alvin Dupree, the pass-rusher they covet. The Jets appear to be ready to move on from Geno Smith, and while it’s unclear what they’d have to send to move up two spots, it’s possible it doesn’t include their second-round pick.

-While things still may change between now and the draft, here are the seven picks I feel most confident in, if the players are still on the board: Jameis Winston to the Bucs, Dante Fowler to the Jaguars, Alvin Dupree to the Raiders, DeVante Parker to the Vikings, Danny Shelton to the Browns, Breshad Perriman to the Ravens, and Jordan Phillips to the Colts.

-If the Titans don’t trade the second overall pick, Leonard Williams is the most often mocked selection. However, don’t rule out Kevin White as the pick. The Titans have done their due diligence on the top receivers in the class, and if they want to roll with Zach Mettenberger, giving him another top receiving target may offer a quicker return than adding a 5-technique.

-The Dolphins have been often linked to trading up in the draft for a top prospect. The two most likely targets are DeVante Parker to complete their receiving corps or Todd Gurley. The Rams, who are looking to add to their offensive line more than their receiving corps, are the most likely top-10 team to trade down.

-It’s still unclear where Randy Gregory will land on draft day, but I’d bet he doesn’t land in the first-round. Teams have question marks about his marijuana history, failed Combine drug test, effort question marks at the end of his senior season, and overall attitude. He’s the top pass-rusher on film for many teams though, and I don’t expect him to be picked in round two.

-Don’t be surprised if Shane Ray falls out of the top-15 picks, Trae Waynes falls out of the top-20, Landon Collins and Shaq Thompson fall out of the first-round, and Rashad Greene of Florida State falls out of the top-three rounds.

-In the build-up to the draft, two of the top pass-rushers have begun to have some question marks emerge. Some teams have questions about Vic Beasley’s wowing NFL Combine, especially the fact that he added a good amount of weight yet also tested better than he ever had in the past. Teams may be unsure what to make about it. Also, Arik Armstead has some injury concerns that teams have expressed issues with, and may cause a few teams to let him slide on draft day, even though he has top-15 worthy talent.

-Todd Gurley MAY be in play for the Atlanta Falcons at 8. But that’s likely only if Alvin Dupree isn’t available, they have questions about Vic Beasley, and/or Shane Ray isn’t high on their board. Shane Ray isn’t a top-20 prospect for us in the draft, but he’s likely to land somewhere in the top-20 picks.

-After the top two quarterbacks, the favorites for Brett Hundley to the Rams and Bryce Petty to the Broncos, both in round two. Garrett Grayson is a wildcard, but he’s viewed highly by teams enough to merit a second round selection.

-On the quarterbacks, I’d set the over/under at 6.5, and I’d probably lean on the under. In one of the weakest quarterback classes in recent history, I’ve heard teams may punt on the position altogether (leading to potential Mike Glennon/Matt Barkely trades). After the top-five, Sean Mannion is the most likely next one drafted, and there’s a chance one of the “safer” back-up quarterbacks like Old Dominion’s Taylor Heinicke or East Carolina’sShane Carden gets a late round pick.

-Despite the program still not a national power, it’s expected that five Miami (FL) Hurricanes will be drafted in the top-60 picks: Ereck Flowers and Phillip Dorsett are first-round potentials, with Duke Johnson, Clive Walford and Denzel Perryman all slotted in round two.

-Ameer Abdullah has his fans in the NFL and in the media, but a lack of 3rd down ability, small hands and fumbling issues may push him out of the top-three rounds. I’m expecting running backs Gurley, Melvin Gordon, Duke Johnson, Tevin Coleman, and TJ Yeldon all to go before Abdullah, and maybe .Mike Davis and David Johnson too.

-For teams looking for vertical threats, Breshad Perriman tops most lists, but there’s some debate whether Ohio State’s Devin Smith or Miami (FL)’s Phillip Dorsett is the next vertical receiver off the board. Both are likely in the top-50 picks, with both being options in Baltimore if Perriman and a top cornerback aren’t available.

-Gerod Holliman has value to teams as a centerfield safety, especially for teams that run a lot of 5- and 6-defensive back sets, such as Rex Ryan’s. But he’ll be likely the second or third Louisville defensive back drafted.

-The Colts are looking at cornerbacks, offensive linemen and nose tackles early in the draft. All three spots have depth, but nose tackle may be the most pressing to address early in the draft. The Bengals are heavily considering all offensive tackles, as are the Panthers. The Panthers are a prime candidate to trade up to the top-17 picks for Andrus Peat, DJ Humphries or Cedric Ogbuehi.

-With only 15-20 first-round grades across most teams’ board, we’re bound to have more than a few surprise late 1st-round picks. Aside from Nelson Agholor, Phillip Dorsett, andEric Rowe, who have received buzz as of late, here are some of my surprise possibilities: Miami’s Duke Johnson, Penn State’s Donovan Smith, Iowa’s Carl Davis, and LSU’sDanielle Hunter.

Takeaways from Mayock conference call:

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock took nearly two hours of questions about the 2015 NFL Draft on a media teleconference Thursday. Here are 16 things we learned from Mayock's answers:

1. Red flags fly high: Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston isn't getting a pass from Mayock for off-field character concerns, or for that matter, the on-field decision making that had a role in his 18 interceptions last year. Part of the reason for the hesitance about Winston's off-field history? The debacle that was Johnny Manziel's rookie season (and offseason) led Mayock to approach his assessment of Winston with more caution.
2. Jetting to podium? If Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota reaches the No. 6 pick of the draft without hearing his name called, the New York Jets should waste no time in filling out their draft card with his name. Said Mayock: "If I'm the Jets, and you really like Mariota, you think about going from No. 6 to No. 2, and you think about going from No. 6 to No. 5, just to guarantee nobody can jump you."

3. Lacking in depth: The most talent-poor positions in the 2015 draft class are safety, tight end and quarterback.

4. Leading the defense: USC defensive lineman Leonard Williams and Florida defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. are the top two defensive players in the draft. Both should be gone within the top five picks.

6. Chief options: LSU offensive lineman La'el Collins and Miami offensive lineman Ereck Flowersare two strong possibilities for the Kansas City Chiefs with the No. 18 pick. Both have needs at both tackle and guard, and both prospects can play either position.5. Wide receivers aplenty: A compelling case can be made for the Jacksonville Jaguars drafting Alabama wide receiver Amari Cooper at No. 3 overall, but based on the receiving talent available later in the draft, defense is the right play for theJaguars. Said Mayock: "They need to upgrade that defensive front, and that wide receiver class is so deep this year. I think if (the Jaguars) want a receiver, you can get him at No. 36." ... More from the Department of Wide Receiver Depth: Mayock views Florida State's Rashad Greene, who posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons for the Seminoles, as a third-round pick.

7. Bear market: Look for the Chicago Bears to take either a wide receiver or a defensive player with the No. 7 overall pick. Said Mayock: "They are obviously hoping for both quarterbacks to go ahead of them."

8. Dropoff: Iowa's Brandon Scherff rates as the top offensive lineman in the draft. After that? Well, Scherff is on a tier by himself. Said Mayock: "After (Scherff), there are an awful lot of question marks. That doesn't mean there's not a lot of talent, because there is. But I could take, for instance,Ereck Flowers, D.J. Humphries, Andrus Peat, andT.J. Clemmings -- all are gifted first-round tackles -- but I could poke a hole in every one of those kids, either from a technique perspective, or an off-the-field perspective, or whatever."

9. Ajayi's health: There are some medical concerns about Boise State running back Jay Ajayi, though he remains a "solid" second-round pick. Some teams are more concerned than others, Mayock said, but the issues won't help him on Day 2.

10. The Peters kiddie slide: Character concerns about former Washington cornerback Marcus Peters have been as well-documented as anyone in the draft except Jameis Winston. But don't look for him to fall out of the first round. Mayock said Peters would be a top 15-18 pick absent those concerns, but despite them, he expects Peters to be taken between picks 20-32.

11. The Gregory super slide: There is no telling where Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory might fall in the draft, thanks to concerns about failed drug tests. And because of that, teams with picks late in the first round are readying in case Gregory -- whom Mayock regards as a top-10 talent -- falls further than expected. "This is one of those deals where teams keep it real quiet. They don't let anybody know, and they get their owner to buy in if he's there at whatever number. ... Pick a number, but everybody is doing their homework in case he gets to them."

12. Packers' plans: Don't be surprised if the Green Bay Packers draft an inside linebacker -- perhaps Mississippi State's Benardrick McKinney -- with an eye toward moving veteran Clay Matthews back to outside linebacker. Two other possibilities at the position for Green Bay: Clemson's Stephone Anthonyand Miami's Denzel Perryman.

13. Dawson's range: Speaking of inside linebackers, TCU's Paul Dawsonis a tough prediction. Thanks to concerns about Dawson's "football character," Mayock projected him anywhere from a late-second-round pick to a fourth-rounder.

14. Timing is key: Although inside linebacker is a glaring need for the San Francisco 49ers with the offseason retirements of Patrick Willis and Chris Borland, the club's pick in the first round (No. 15 overall) is a bit rich for the position. As such, look for San Francisco to wait until Day 2 to address that need -- and get more value in the first round with a guy like versatile Oregon defensive lineman Arik Armstead.

15. On guard, Seahawks: The defending NFC champions don't have a pick until No. 63 overall, near the end of the second round. Two strong possibilities that could be available there, according to Mayock: Duke guard Laken Tomlinson and South Carolina guard A.J. Cann.

16. Sit tight, Landon: Conventional pre-draft wisdom has held that Alabama's Landon Collins will be the first safety chosen in the draft. Mayock, however, believes Arizona State's Damarious Randall will get the call before Collins. The reason? He's the best coverage safety available, whereas Collins is more of an "in the box" defender.

NFL Media analyst Mike Mayock took questions for nearly two hours Thursday on a media teleconference, and linked a number of 2015 NFL Draft prospects with teams that could represent a potential fit. Here are some of the possibilities Mayock mentioned:

1. New York Jets: Oregon QB Marcus Mariota

It's difficult to say whether the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback from Oregon will be available to the Jets with the No. 6 overall pick, but Mayock believes Mariota is a no-brainer selection for Gang Green if he falls that far. In fact, Mayock said the Jets should even consider a trade-up to land him.

2. Tennessee Titans: USC DL Leonard Williams

Mayock acknowledged the possibility that Tennessee could trade out of the No. 2 overall pick, but if the Titans stay put, Mayock sees the former Trojans star -- considered by some to be the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft -- as the pick that makes the most sense for them.

3. Kansas City Chiefs: LSU OL La'el Collins, Miami OL Ereck Flowers
Mayock said the Chiefs, who hold the 18th overall pick, have needs at both offensive tackle and guard, and either Collins or Flowers could provide the club with a strong option capable of playing either spot.

4. Jacksonville Jaguars: Alabama WR Amari Cooper, West Virginia WR Kevin WhiteWhile Mayock thinks the Jaguars could be better off taking a top defensive player third overall, he said a "compelling case" could be made for Jacksonville taking a wide receiver with the pick, given that the team finished last in the NFL in scoring offense (15.6 points per game) and has a developing quarterback in Blake Bortles. The Jaguars could have their choice of the draft's top two pass-catchers, Cooper and White, but Mayock said Cooper is the safer pick of the two.

5. New Orleans Saints, Arizona Cardinals: Nebraska DE Randy Gregory

Thanks to a positive drug test at the NFL Scouting Combine and a history of failed drug tests in college, the Nebraska pass rusher's draft status is difficult to peg. Mayock indicated Gregory could land at any number of draft slots, but mentioned either of the Saints' two first-round picks (Nos. 13 and 31) or Arizona at No. 24 as possibilities.

6. Green Bay Packers: ILBs Stephone Anthony(Clemson), Benardrick McKinney (Mississippi State) and Denzel Perryman (Miami)

Mayock believes the Packers intend to move linebacker Clay Matthews, who saw action at inside linebacker last season, back outside. That would free up a vacancy at inside linebacker, which could be nicely filled by one of those three 'backers, although Mayock said he doesn't have a first-round grade on any inside 'backers.

7. Detroit Lions: Texas DL Malcom Brown, FSU DL Eddie Goldman, Oklahoma DL Jordan Phillips, LSU OL La'el Collins, Miami OL Ereck Flowers

Mayock didn't discount the possibility of the Lions taking a skill-position player with the No. 23 overall pick, but suggested the club is more likely to address needs on the line of scrimmage.

8. San Francisco 49ers: Oregon DL Arik Armstead

Mayock: "I think he's a perfect fit for what they need. ... At No. 15, that makes sense."

9. Seattle Seahawks: Duke OL Laken Tomlinson, South Carolina OL A.J. Cann

Seattle doesn't pick until the No. 63 overall selection of the draft, at which point Mayock sees two interior linemen -- Tomlinson and Cann -- as quality options for Pete Carroll's team.

TFY Draft Insider's Tony Pauline reports that the Saints will "consider trading up if they feel they are in striking distance" of Clemson edge rusher Vic Beasley.

After discussions with NFL personnel staffers, Lance Zierlein believes Randy Gregory will be selected before Shane Ray.

Tony Pauline:

April 23rd

– I’m told if the Detroit Lions target a defensive tackle in round two the player at the top of their list is Xavier Cooper, who they feel is a perfect fit for their system.

– South Carolina tight end Rory Busta Anderson, who’s still suffering from a hamstring strain, had his pro-day on Tuesday. Anderson did not run the forty and ran a partial route tree with no deep outs to protect the hamstring. I’m told he caught the ball well and has built a good amount of intrigue around himself. The Denver Broncos, New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers were all on hand and have shown a good deal of interest in Anderson.

– Despite a poor forty time and general disappointing workout at the combine I’m told scouts like the film on Jean Sifrin and many teams have stamped him as a late rounder. Both are justified in my opinion. His age is of concern as Sifrin will be 27 years old this season.

– Sources say Andrus Peat won’t get past the St Louis Rams at 10 and could be selected even earlier. New York Giants perhaps?

Tyler Sambrailo was slightly disappointing in the run-up to the draft but teams still like his film and the athleticism he displayed in college. Sambrailo is ranked as a tackle on a lot of boards outside war rooms but I’m told he’ll very likely be drafted as a zone blocking guard for the fall.

– One scenario I’m hearing for the New England Patriots is a trade out of the 32nd pick, something the team has had a lot of success with in the past, and moving down a few slots to select offensive guard AJ Cann. This would fill a big need at guard for the team. I’ve been skeptical of Cann’s movement skills but was told the big offensive lineman, who has been struggling with a calf strain since the end of the season, worked out for several teams on Monday and ran both the short shuttle and 3 cone at the request of coaches. He timed 4.51s in the short shuttle and 7.37s in the 3 cone, both terrific marks. Only two offensive linemen, Jake Fisher and Ali Marpet, ran faster times during the combine.

April 22nd

– A little more on the Browns. Earlier today on the Bull and Fox Show I revealed additional news on Cleveland wanting to trade up and select Marcus Mariota or possibly trading back with a team who wants to jump up and grab the signal caller. The premise being if trading up for Mariota was too rich for Cleveland’s blood they would be part of a three team trade in which another franchise would use the Browns initial pick as a stepping stone to move up for Mariota. I speculated the team in question is the San Diego Chargers with Philip Rivers being part of the trade. When asked if the Philadelphia Eagles would be interested in something similar I stated a move like that would surprise me. Here’s the audio. In conversations later in the day I found out on Monday evening Mike Florio wrote a piece stating the Eagles are in fact one team looking to work with the Browns in the hopes of trading up for Mariota. The article which can be found here.

After my interview with Bull and Fox I made further inquiries and can confirm both the Chargers and Eagles are exploring the possibility of maneuvering up for Mariota through the Browns and both teams have had conversations on the topic. This of course is contingent on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers not selecting Mariota with the first pick, which is a greater possibility than many presently predict, as well as the Titans passing on the Heisman Trophy winner. A league source told me if the Titans are ready to deal the pick then the Browns hold the most powerful position in the draft and the ability to dictate whether they or another team make the move for Mariota.

– I’m told the New Orleans Saints, another team with two picks in round one, will consider trading up if they feel they are in striking distance of Vic Beasley. Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan loves Beasley’s pass rushing ability and potential in a 3-4.

– I’ve been a big proponent of Taiwan Jones and have stated several times he’s one of the more underrated linebackers in this draft. And while I was disappointed in his forty time at the combine it seems a number of teams concur on Jones being a gem at the linebacker position. Teams feel Jones is a smart, heady linebacker who makes up for his lack of foot speed with great instincts. The outside linebacker spot he played as a junior for Michigan State was a complex read and diagnose position and Jones rarely had mental lapses. Michigan State coaches have been raving about Jones to anyone who asks and there are a bevy of 3-4 teams who grade Jones as a third round pick.

– Another Michigan State defender that will be drafted earlier than originally predicted is Marcus Rush. Setting aside the fact his pro-day results were much better than scouts expected, Rush has blown teams away during the interview process. His willingness and ability to be a situational defender in a variety of schemes could push Rush into the fifth round.

– Staying with the linebackers, Wyoming senior Mark Nzeocha, who had his 2014 season cut short with a knee injury, worked out today for teams just six months after surgery. Nzeocha measured 6030/238lbs and timed as fast as 4.52s in the forty with a 1.56s 10-yard split. His other marks included a 39-inch vertical jump, 10’ 11” broad jump and 4.3s in the short shuttle. Scouts were surprised how quick and fast Nzeocha was just six months post-op. I had the opportunity to meet the senior at the combine and found Nzeocha to be engaging and articulate.

– I’m told the Seattle Seahawks would love to grab Dorial Green-Beckham if he’s available at the 63rd selection but they expect the receiver to be off the board during the initial fifteen picks of round two.

– I was surprised when I saw my buddy Josh Norris posted on a number of teams ranking Sean Mannion as the third quarterback in the draft. In the end Mannion could be the one laughing as I’m told more than a dozen teams in fact rank Mannion number three on their quarterback board. The Oregon State senior has recently worked out for the St Louis Rams and Dallas Cowboys.

– I’ve taken a lot of grief for mispronouncing Marcus Mariota’s name time and time again; fair enough. In my defense I am an American of Italian descent and a life long New Yawker. See you tomorrow.

April 20th

– Expect the talk of teams wanting to trade up for Marcus Mariota to pick up intensity in the coming week. From all accounts I’m hearing the Cleveland Browns are the front runners and working hardest in the hopes of acquiring the quarterback. Early last week I was told the asking price from the Tennessee Titans was both of the Browns first round picks as well as their choice in the second round, to which Cleveland replied no. Understandable Tennessee would have a high asking price at this point and even more understandable the Browns would say no. I’m told the Browns may be willing to part with both first round picks for Maroita but want to hold on to the second round choice to draft a much needed receiver.

– Back on February 20th I posted the St Louis Rams would target linebackers early in the draft. One linebacker the team loves isBenardrick McKinney of Mississippi State. The team worked out McKinney last week and came away very impressed. The tenth pick of round one is too early for McKinney which lends many to believe the Rams could trade down in the first round or trade up from the second round to secure McKinney.

– The Denver Broncos are another team I’m hearing linked to McKinney as they believe he’d fill their linebacker need. The other name associated with Denver in league circles is Paul Dawson of TCU. It must be mentioned the team has not shown a lot of interest in Dawson via the visit/workout route.

– I’ve been a big proponent of running back Jay Ajayi of Boise State and like his entire game. That said last week I was informed a number of teams red flagged Ajayi over a knee injury he sustained early in his college career.

– Now that he’s been cleared of any wrong doing I’m told Frank Clark of Michigan will be selected much earlier (top 125) than most predict.

It's interesting trying to identify which rumors are leaked by teams for their benefit.

I'm convinced the Browns "being the centerpiece" to any move up for Mariota is a rumor started by the Browns in order to create a market (I could see them interested in moving up for Mariota themselves though).

I think the latest "don't be surprised if the Titans may just take Mariota" rumor is pretty clearly a "come and get our No. 2 pick if you want Mariota" tactic by the team.

Not me. The GM and coach there are drafting/coaching for their jobs this year. Would you rather pin your career to Mettenberger or Mariota?

I agree with your analysis on the Titans. Not sure about the Browns though. Why would they want other bidders if they were interested in Mariota for themselves?
They could better their situation by adding a veteran QB and multiple other picks for those picks perhaps. A statement like that says "our picks are available".

Also while Greg Cosell may be getting close to senility I recently read where he prefers Mettenberger to both Winston and Mariota - it seems Mettenberger has his share of other backers out there as well. The team didn't win any games he started but he held his own as a rookie.

I don't believe the Rivers stuff for a second. Bradford.......perhaps.

My attitude about Mett is the Titans didn't even like him enough to take him before the 6th. He didn't beat anyone out, got the job via injury. I believe the Titans can't proclaim Mariota love because Bucs still gotta take Winston.

If I'm remembering correctly Mettenberger fell in the draft due to an ACL tear (not that he would have been a first or second rounder otherwise), but regardless of his draft stock we actually got to see him play in games last season and he looked like he could be a solid starting QB in this league with seasoning. I will agree that if they see Mariota as a franchise level QB then Mettenberger being on the roster is not a deterrent to taking him at No. 2. I just think they'd prefer to go in other directions.

I don't really see the Rivers trade as all that far fetched to be honest based on many various factors. True, these things aren't very common so its not likely to happen, but I'm half expecting it to come to fruition.

I wonder if teams actually follow any of the draft leaks/rumors...I'm guessing they have to do their homework and stick with what they believe - too many egos in the room to change based on a rumor.

I listened on local radio to 2 former coaches say this time right now is when they get on the phone with other coaches to see what they're thinking. I could easily see someone assigned to track these rumors.

Daniel Jeremiah's podcast is great to get the behind the scenes look at pre-draft stuff, and one thing he said was that they get their stuff from their league contacts, friends on different teams, etc. So i think they get better rumors than we do.

Kind of get the feeling that if we knew how much these guys flapped their gums when they shouldn't, we'd be shocked.

I'll be pretty surprised if Chip doesn't do everything in his power and then some to move up and grab MM. Any other team/coach I'd say it's too far of a reach, but Kelly obviously doesn't care about conventional wisdom.

Just want to take a moment to thank Massraider and Faust for being two of the best and most resourceful posters on this board. Two Raider fans making the nation proud! Keep on truckin, fellas.

The Florida Times Union's R. O'Halloran believes ALA WR A. Cooper is in play for the #Jaguars at #3 overall.

So now the Jaguars are interested in Amari Cooper at #3? Translation: If you want Cooper talk to us about trading ahead of the Raiders.
This is exactly what popped into my head when I read your Moody post, but you've got it covered.

By the way, Twitter is really pulling the curtain back.

Do a search for "Cooper Jaguars" and it looks like the rumor is everywhere.

One guy wrote something, and a bunch of other shlubs are Tweeting minutes later, ".......you know, I can see Cooper to JAX"

Kind of hilarious.

I've talked to several personnel guys that think Dupree is going to get picked ahead of Beasley and Ray. Bigger/stronger
I've been thinking for the past few weeks that Beasley might be the most overrated pass rusher. His workout numbers don't really show up in games... Workout warrior maybe.
As a Jets fan (where many have Beasley pegged), I am beginning to prefer Dupree over Beasley and certainly Ray.

T-Minus 7 Days: The Draft’s QBs, Now and Then

Excerpt:

Five things you need to know

1. I don’t believe the teams often linked to Alabama strong safety Landon Collins at the end of the first round are seriously considering drafting him. Said one GM: “You’re not going to pick a safety like that in the first round unless he’s Sean Taylor. He’s a good player but is there any ‘wow’ factor? If he’s just steady, it may not be worth it.”

2. Trying to slot Washington cornerback Marcus Peters in the first round? You can cross off the clubs undergoing coaching transitions, as well as teams lacking strong veteran leadership in the defensive backfield. The stories of Peters’ verbal clashes with an assistant on first-year Washington coach Chris Petersen’s staff have potentially vulnerable NFL staffs disinterested. “He needs to be in a meeting room with some grown men who are about their business,” said one evaluator.

3. Of the eight or so teams rumored to be interested in a draft day deal for Adrian Peterson, four make sense to me. You have to figure a team willing to give up a 1 or a 2 for a 30-year-old running back feels as though they are one All-Pro away from the Super Bowl. So count out Washington, Miami, Tampa Bay and Oakland, leaving Arizona, Atlanta, Dallas and San Diego. The rest of the leaked teams feel to me like Minnesota trying to drive up Peterson’s price to get the first-rounder they seek.

4. An intriguing question in the middle of the first round: Which receiver goes first, UCF’s Breshad Perriman or Oklahoma’s Dorial Green-Beckham? Both are projects for different reasons. Green-Beckham looks like a pro on film and in workouts, but he was accused of shoving a woman down a flight of stairs, leading to his dismissal at Missouri. Perriman was productive enough to be considered a late-first rounder, then he ran in the 4.2s at his pro day. But, said one GM, “he never played faster than 4.45.” After asking around, I like Green-Beckham as the fourth receiver taken, after Amari Cooper, Kevin White and DeVante Parker.

5. As several readers pointed out, I erred when I implied in last Thursday’s column that prospect visits don’t matter. It’s easy to oversimplify when working on deadline. Face time with teams matters a great deal for prospects with character and injury concerns. Some teams, like the Packers, use the visits on small-school fringe players in order to shore up their undrafted free agent plans. Other teams, like the Cowboys, rarely draft a player who didn’t first visit the team. Please accept my humble apology, savvy readers.

Would love to see what Bowles would do with him.

As a Falcons fan, Dupree, Beasley, others are all likely to be in our sights. I'm going to trust Quinn to get his guy, but I'm curious if there's anyone moving up to get their guy or if theyre close enough in rank to let the GMs wait.

Shefter said there's a sense that Titans are listening.

Also said that the Titans could draft him and complete a trade after that.

Have not been following, but is the Waynes dropping thing the real deal?
My guess is the 40 time is a bigger deal to some mock drafters than to the teams themselves...
I think it also has plenty to do with the fact there isn't much separating these guys and the best fit may depend on the team/circumstance.

Waynes is fast and tall but not especially physical and you hear "solid" more than you like for a 1st rounder imo, Collins ideal NFL frame but why wasn't he dominant in college, Peters attitude risks off the charts, Williams pour you another along with your chances of being drafted in the first round right down the toilet, etc.

I don't think Waynes has ever been considered a great corner prospect, but he might have the least red flags at what has become a premier position in the league.

I wonder if teams actually follow any of the draft leaks/rumors...I'm guessing they have to do their homework and stick with what they believe - too many egos in the room to change based on a rumor.

I couldn't agree more. I don't know if he's a great scout, or has a ton of connections within the scouting community but Jeremiah blew the others out of water imo in calling fast risers in the draft process.

He was the first one that had Armstead going in the first round. He called Jarrett(DT) as one of his favorites early in the process and that guy has been steadily rising. Someone I trust said he also called Humphries and that guy had a meteoric rise.

I don't know how he knows but it seems to me he knows before anyone else(that we get to read and or listen to) so I'll pay close attention to what he has to say next year.

Regarding Shefter's comment earlier about a draft-and-trade scenario, Bill Polian brought up a good point that I haven't seen anywhere, and pretty much squashed the idea:

Teams get draft allotments, based on where their picks are, they get a rookie cap. If Mariota goes 2nd, he gets #2 pick money. That's obvious, I know. But if the Eagles traded later picks and some players for him after he was picked, they wouldn't have the rookie cap to pay him. I had no idea about that.

Even if Bradford was part of the deal????

I thought the rookie cap was just a subset of the larger cap in general.

NJ.com's Mark Eckel passes along a "rumor making its rounds in NFL personnel meetings" of the Eagles trading Sam Bradford to the Browns for the No. 19 overall pick in the draft.
The Browns already offered No. 19 to the Rams for Bradford, prior to his trade to Philadelphia. St. Louis didn't accept because it wanted a quarterback, and wound up acquiring Nick Foles. The Browns are "still said to have interest" in Bradford. Per Eckel, the rumor has the Eagles then sending Nos. 19 and 20 -- plus Mychal Kendricks and Fletcher Cox -- to the Titans in exchange for No. 2 overall, where Philly would select Marcus Mariota. Bleacher Report's Jason Cole reported Friday that Bradford currently believes the Eagles may be planning to trade him.

It's weird, Polian made it sounds like the individual teams would have the slotted amounts to sign their rooks. Very strange.
