Draft Strategy (1 Viewer)

If this belongs in the Assistant coach section, my apologies and please move it over before I get the tongue lashing!

If you are lucky enough to have one of the consensus top 4 guys...what is the best way to assemble a team? I realize everyone has different leagues, whether it be Dynasty, Keepers, PPR, 2 QB Start, etc.

Do you automatically grab the Ronnie Brown or McGahee type back if he falls to you in the 2nd round? Because Holt, Chad Johnson, Marvin, TO, etc will all be there for you and then your 3rd round pick is only right around the corner. Are Peterson or Norwood or an Ahman Green enough to pair with one of the Top 4 later on in the draft?

I guess my post is this:

Do you need another top-flight back OR can you rely more heavily on one of your Top 4 paired with a lesser back and try to fill other spots on your roster?

I tend to think filling out the roster is the smart decision and go with The top 4 guy and an RB3.

What do ya'll think?

I'd press my advantage as opposed to conceding it. I picked up S Jackson and Travis Henry in my auction keeper last weekend.

It seems as though a lot people think that way, but i dont know if it is the correct answer or if there even is a right answer.

Yes, you now have to really nice RB's but the rest of your team is going to struggle a little more than it would if you went with a stud WR or a Stud QB. why not swing back later and get the 2nd RB? This will still look very nice with one of the elite top 4.

I just finished a slow draft & had the #1 pick. None of the 4 Wrs you listed were available at the 2/3 turn. Neither was Ronnie Brown. Ended up taking Benson & Fitzgerald.

I think you must go rb-rb. There is a huge drop off after Brown, Edge, Benson and Portis. These are the guys you're looking at 2.08-2.12. 3.01-3.05 you can get WR's like Fitzgerald, Williams, Housh, Boldin, Wayne, TO etc. I'd much rather lock up my starting RB's and anchor a solid WR in the 3rd. Just my opinion after drafting tonight out of the 5th spot.

i concur with avoiding injuries, Lock up your solid RBs soon as the drop off seems sooner than previous years. The WRs he mentioned should be there.

I have had a lot of success with stocking up on the other skill positions (QB/WR/Gates) early and gambling on mid round RBs (JJones, FTaylor, Peterson type guys) later. I'd rather limit the risk and build as many "sure-fire" point producers then take a RB just to have a RB. The Browns, Jacobs, and Portis' of the world scare me.

Drafted 5th tonight in a PPR league. Lucked out and Gore fell to me at 1.05 (LJ went 3rd & Addai 4th)

I took Owens at 2.08, 15 RB's off the board already. McGahee, Edge, B.Jacobs etc. still on board. I took Owens as the 4th WR off the board after Smith, C.Johnson & Harrison and I'm glad I did. When it came back to me at 3.05 McGahee was the only back to go in between. I took ADP at 3.05 (I got him Sunday at 4.07 but I didn't want to gamble on losing him.)

Moral of my story is that there were no RB's left at 2.08 that I felt warrented the pick. In fact, only one RB went in the next 9 picks, so I got my choice of the WR's and nailed ADP in the mid 3rd (whom I'm very happy with.) 8 more WR's went before my 4.08 pick making McAllister an easy choice for me over WR's like Hines Ward & Reggie Brown. So now I sit with Gore, ADP & McAllister (along with Owens) while everyone was busy drafting Galloway & Chambers & Clayton. Now, the rest of the league turns to the RB's, scooping up Tatum Bell, Lamont Jordon & Ladell Betts, I'm able to tighten up my WR corps with Branch, Cotchery & Holmes. C.Cooley in the 8th followed by Romo & Roethlisberger back to back in the 9th/10th give me a really nice core team.
