Hi everyone! Long time Lurker, first time poster. Anyway I really could use some help with this.
My 12 team dynasty league draft is coming up, and I'm faced with a conundrum. My first pick is late in the second round, and then I don't pick again until the fourth (I traded the bulk of my draft for veteran players). My league is a salary cap league, where we sign players for x number of years at x dollars, in case you were wondering.
The best player likely to be available to me with my first pick is Kevin Kolb. He represents the most upside and if he were to 'break out' Aaron Rodgers style I could have a highly tradeable commodity on my roster, which would (hopefully) allow me to trade him for the pieces I need to fill out my team. I have a FF confidante of mine trying to sell me on exactly this strategy. The problem with this is that I really don't need a QB. I'm currently rolling with Matt Schaub as my No.1, and I have a capable backup behind him.
What my Team really needs is defense. there are a number of potentially decent if not great defensive players on the board when I make my first pick. I could go get a guy like Daryl Washington ( as a rookie his salary would be very low essentially allowing me to get in on the ground floor). His Value, if he were to produce well of course, could also be very good in the future, but he's also a more risky pick. I could also get the best veteran defensive piece on the board(I need LB, DL and DB), but his trade value is likely to remain where it is or go down.
I understand this is a bit of a 'stock market' mentality when evaluating players. And I tend to subscribe to the theory that a team isn't necessarily built in the draft as much as free agency/trade. But essentially my question is whether or not I should focus my draft on team needs or just take the best player available on the board? Thanks for the help!
