NFL | Rodgers-Cromartie continues to receive high praise Published Wed Mar 26 12:56:00 p.m. CT 2008

(KFFL) Alex Marvez, of FOXSports.com, reports Tennessee State CB Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie has had his draft stock soar since January and may become the first defensive back selected in the NFL Draft. Tom Shaw, of Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex, handled Rodgers-Cromartie's pre-draft preparation. Shaw has worked with 94 first-round draft picks and has compared Rodgers-Cromartie to former NFL star CB Deion Sanders. "I think Dominique is a Hall of Famer," Shaw said. "The way this kid can react to the football, the way he adjusts ... He's the best receiver I have in this camp. He's a kid that can do everything."

Says he's the best RECEIVER he has in camp...He's a DB WOW

Q. Where did the slogan, "With a name like Cromartie, he has to be good®" come from?A. The slogan has been used by our family since the mid-2000s. Initially, it referred to the unusual family name (Cromartie) with the connotation that since it was such an odd name, the family had better produce outstanding players. According to fans, if you see the Cromartie name on a player, you have assurance that the player will be good.

That would explain why he played in 1AA...Honestly, I'm not hating on this kid (I know there are plenty of others who will) but I've don't recall seeing this much buzz around a 1AA combine/Senior Bowl wonder ever. Though I'm sure if Mamula came out in 2006 instead of pre-Internet it would be similar.

Isn't Tom Shaw reputable? I thought it was a bit overboard myself. I'm in Nashville and seen him play 10+ games . The kid is a playmaker...but to call him a Hall of Famer is ...

Shaw is a great trainer, but he's not an NFL football coach or talent scout. He thought Marcus Vick was the greatest thing he'd ever seen too. I'm also not hating on DRC. There isn't really much we can go on beyond the measureables, Senior Bowl, and media hype. I guess you either buy it or not, but it's hard to have a strong case either way. I think Shaw is overboard, but I'm buying the more realistic hype myself.

The interesting thing everyone brings up is where was all this buzz when he was calling himself Dominque Rodgers a few months ago? Trust me, as a marketer, I am envious of the brilliance hyphenation, but as a football fan I can't help but be skeptical as to how much buzz is attributed to the -Cromartie ...

I can assure that DRC's play on the field had a lot more to do with that then the Cromartie name. He's silky smooth on the move, an explosive leaper, a burner in a straight line, and on top of it all, he's over 6' with long arms and the ball skills of a WR.He was not dominant in FCS, but he's got the physical ability to be dominant in the NFL. Within the first five minutes in Mobile I was sold on his upside. You can see that things that few other corners could even dream of doing come physically easy to him. There's some risk, but more than enough potential to offset it.

See, this is the logic I can't get. He was not dominate in 1AA against inferior athletes, but will be dominant in the NFL against equal to or better athletes?Tebucky Jones had the physical ability to be dominant in the NFL as well. So did lots and lots of other athletes.

Look, he could very well put on some weight, maintain his speed, prove extremely coachable and excel in the NFL. But I'd say the odds are equally great -- if not greater -- that he will prove a fantastic athlete who could not simply not succeed in lots of other areas.

Like I said, you either buy the hype or you don't. In a case like this, where Bloom is part of the hype, as he's seen the kid first hand and invested a couple years into watching the process with no more motivation than to just get it right, then maybe the smart play is to buy the hype.

Fair point, but I would say -- and no offense to Sig or any other guy who invests lots of time in researching the draft and college players -- but NFL teams have departments and personnel who are 100% dedicated and put in 80 hr weeks to scout and figure out who the best players are, and on any given year a good chunk of those teams totally whiff on first round draft picks.Ultimately, it's all one big bull#### crapshoot. You have guys with great college production at huge programs who flop. You have guys from Mississippi Valley State setting records as the greatest WR of all-time. You have guys who played college basketball becoming the best TE in football.

It's all bull####, I tell ya.

I don't know if he will be, but he can be, and only a few guys come along each year who can be. I would imagine the smart organizations don't spend first round picks on "can be" types. If you have a strong feeling a guy you can get at 10 will be somewhere between the 15th and 25th best player in the draft, but not lower - maybe a pro bowl or two, but not a difference maker - you probably opt for him over the guy who "can be" top 3 or 5, but also could not even be #100.
