Driving from London to Edinburgh (1 Viewer)

Thinking of a UK roadtrip next year. London to Edinburgh. Don't really know much yet outside of stopping at Stonehenge and staying a couple of days at either Liverpool or Manchester. Thinking maybe 5-7 days. London just for the day we land. Any great drives? One of the coastlines? Go to Wales?

No great drives. UK isn't really a road-trip kind of place.

Cambridge/Oxford, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Salisbury, Lake District, York, Durham, Hadrian's Wall

Yeah, I'm not expecting it like in Tuscany but I thought it would be similar to Ireland. Some rolling hills and farms with sheep all over. And the coastal drive from Belfast to Giants Causeway was awesome. We try to stay off the highways as much as possible unless we're in a hurry.

Thanks for mentioning Hadrian's Wall...that's a must.

If it's countryside, hills, panoramas you're looking for it's the Lake District.

Yeah England is not like that, it's flat with a bunch of narrow roads and villages. The southern coast is nice and the western coast is ok but there aren't a lot of great drives. Now Scotland has nice drives, but I've driven from London to Liverpool and it sucked.

Hmmm. So maybe we just go direct to Edinburgh and day trip from there like we did in Dublin.

I have been to England 10-12 times, spent a lot of the time in Oxford/Cambridge/Midlands but have been all over. Northern Wales is decent for sites and the like but it's not like Ireland, Northern Ireland or Scotland. Those places are beautiful and things catch your eye. England isn't that visually interesting plus the whole driving on the wrong side of the road makes it tougher. Taking train to Edinburgh and then exploring from there would be ideal IMO, you're not missing anything by not seeing Liverpool.

Yeah, ok...I guess a stand-alone Edinburgh trip makes more sense. No reason to drive if there's really nothing to see.

Thanks for the help!

Maybe I'll go back to Plan B - NY to Asheville road trip. Check out Virginia and N. Carolina.

London+Scotland is a terrific trip IMO. I'm not a big fan of England though, so I'm probably not the best person to lend advice.

We've been to London a few times and thought of starting there because of the direct flight. It was more about outside London and Edinburgh.

There are some things to see. I like the train idea. Go from London to York. York is worth the visit. Then from York to Durham. Then from Durham to Edinburgh.

If you like road trips then you may want to check out London to Cornwall (coastal towns) or Edinburgh to Inverness to Durness (the Highlands).

I made the drive from Cambridge to Edinburgh with buddies ~15 years ago. It is a very unremarkable drive. Similar to I-95 through PA, MD and DE. Cambridge - Awesome. Edinburgh - Awesome. In between - meh (to include Newcastle)

There are lots of things to see. You just have to get off the "motorway" and look for them. Which it sounds like jamny was talking about.

Yeah, it was but it looks like, even off highway, there's not much to see. It might be more of a train thing. I do like some of the more southern England and northern Scotland ideas too.

We did try to see other things. That's why I related it to the part of I-95. You could check out the English equivalents of Joppatown and Wilmington, DE. Unexciting here, unexciting there. If there were some diamonds in the rough, we unfortunately missed them.
