Dropping S Hill, WR, NY Jets (1 Viewer)

Rovers

In FBG's Fantasy Roundtable feature (one of my favorites) it was unanimous. Drop Stephen Hill. I'm not so sure.

He went off in week one. He's put up two zeroes since, and now has a hamstring injury. He's raw, very raw, and has awful hands, trying to chest catch everything. Having said that, he has dominant break away speed and will be a deep threat in every game he is healthy enough to play in. His size also makes him a good end zone target.

What the experts in the roundtable article are over looking is the fact that Hill could have easilly had two TD's in week 3. Terftiller's tale of the tape article picked up on this point. Once, after badly beating the coverage, he pulled his hammy, and pulled up. That could have, should have been a long TD. Now, whether or not he would have caught the ball... but when led, he can't help but to use his hands to bring the ball in. He also had an end zone pass he could have caught, and that by my count is 3 TD's he could or should have had in the past two weeks.

Why hold him? Because I beleive at some point he'll have another big week like week 1, and unless one has an early waiver wire priority, he'll get scooped up before I could pick him back up off of waivers.

Despite his poor pass catching technique, which I hope will improve with some coaching, he remains potentially the best play maker on the Jets entire offense, an offense starved for any kind of playmaker. With Revis out, and a running game that isn't working, I think the Jets will have to throw the ball far more often than they want to just to stay in games.

He has 6'4" size, sub 4.4 speed. I've seen him simply run away from D backs. For such a big WR, he is quick and shifty, given his size. On a team with some talent, some playmakers on offense, I'd say drop him. The Jets offense is void of playmakers. I think he has the potential to be a top 25 WR in the second half of the season, so I'm holding.

My advice... if you have a roster spot you can use as a reserve, keep or pick Hill up now, before he begins to come into his own. One more blow up week like week 1, and he'll get snapped up by the bottom feeders in your league before you can get him back. He'll be cheap in leagues that use bidding now too. In WW priority leagues, unless your FF team is awful, he'll be gone before you can put a claim in.

Just my :2cents:

I think he has been banged up every week inluding week one, would like to see what he can do completely healthy.

I put him on the wire in a few of the 10 team leagues I'm in. I think he may still have some value this year, but churning your roster is the way to win in Fantasy Football. I used to constantly make the mistake of holding on to "potential" for too long. Now I KNOW that waiver gems are found early in the year and I want to get as many on my team as possible. Hill happened to be the worst player on a few of my teams, so he was the guy I had to cut.

sorry, would need to have REALLY deep rosters to keep him rostered. two zeros in a row and now a hammy? who knows how long hes out

Waiver wire gems are roster moves based on potential, aren't they? A player shows something, you pick him up and hope it wasn't a fluke. WW moves based on injuries are another story. Some players, like Ingram, the hand writing is on the wall. His upside is near zilch. I roster 6 WR's. I start 4 most weeks, but Wayne is on a bye, so I'm starting 2 RB's. I'd never start my 6th rostered WR. That spot is for players I think might break out. I could keep a Donnie Avery there, and he'd never start for me either, but his ceiling is low, even with Collie gone. T. Y. Hilton? He might be a good pickup, but he was gone before I could get him on WW priority too. He has to compete with Wayne and Avery for targets. Hill has Holmes and Kerley. I'd rather roster the higher ceiling WR instead, someone who could break my starting line up at some point. If I dropped Hill, I'd just get another WR who I will never start. I think Hill's season long potential is better than any other WW gamble I might stumble into. With a FF team that is in the top third of the league, any breakout player won't be there when my WW priority comes up. My chances of picking up a WW gem is near zero picking 10th out of 12 in priority. I just don't see any player out there that has Hill's potential. Keep in mind what the Round table participants did not... as Terftiller pointed out, Hill could/should have had 2 TD's last week. That is potential based on measurables, not wishful thinking, it's tangable.

So you're going to keep him on your bench until he has another big game, then put him in your starting lineup so he can put up more zeros? :lmao:

You might be right. I bought into the hype after week 1 and added him in multiple leagues. At this point, the juice has died down and I'm willing to risk him blowing up and would drop him for any of these players:Jerome SimpsonBilal PowellRyan WilliamsMendenhallRamses BardenAlshon JefferyPonder (if I needed a QB)Heath Miller (if I needed a TE)I'm not sure if all of those guys will prove to be better options than Hill, but I've been so much more successful in recent years as I turn my roster over faster. It's a mistake to hold onto non performing players for too long. Especially guys with ZERO track record like Hill. I don't recommend dropping him for nothing, but I hate locking up a roster spot on a guy who's doing nothing.

Every one of those players are rostered in my league except Ponder. Even Blackmon is rostered and hasn't been dropped. Hillis... even Dwyer, all rostered. McCluster, Cribbs, rostered. Powell I picked up, but the rest of the players you listed were DRAFTED in my 12 team league. Miller went around the tenth round. How is it players liuke this are on your WW?As for the obligatory tool comments so far in this thread, I'll just move on.

It's more than just being raw at running routes. I don't think he adjusts to the ball well. For a big guy, he doesn't use his body to box out well. So basically, you're left with hitting him in stride and hope he hangs on.

That Paul Johnson defense really did him no favors.

I pulled a few names off of Waldman's Week 4 Waiver Report. Not all (or any) of these guys are available in every league. I joined a few of those $100 Yahoo Pro leagues that only have 10 teams and there are decent options available on the wire. I also play in 12 and 14 team leagues where the wire is picked clean, one of which I am holding Hill. I wouldn't recommend dropping him for Kansas City's defense, but it wouldn't take much upside potential from another RB or WR for me to dump him.

I agree. He has the raw skills... size, incredible speed, strength. Since my 6th WR will never break my starting line up, he will stay on my roster for another league specific reason. I can keep him for a 10th round pick next year if he pans out. Regardless of that, his situation on an offense with no playmakers and his raw skills... how fast can he learn? As you alluded to, his college career did almost nothing to prepare him to play in the NFL. Still, his raw skills may carry him at some point as he improves on his routes and pass catching. "Hitting him in stride and hoping he hangs on" is an accurate description of where he is now. That does however leave a lot of room for upside. Why does Sanchez throw to him? He gets open, often. There are few CB's that can run the sideline with him. Despite his marginal route running, he still gets open, gets seperation. I hold out hope he is coachable and learns quickly, possibly making him at least startable in the second half of the season. I'd be happy to use him as a WR4 for bye week filler once he's over the minor hammy issue. I'll say it again... he played only a half in week 3 and could/should have had 2 TD's. As for these posts that talk about hot WW pickups... they all talk about players that have either been drafted in my league ( I cut back to one local from the 5 leagues I was in last year) and any worthy WW pickup is long gone before I pcik 10th out of 12. That makes Hill better to keep than drop for me.

No offense,Rovers, but it sounds like your league needs a smaller roster. That was a pretty representative list of players and I think 6 of the names were among MFL's top Adds this week.

12 team league, 16 man rosters. The problem I have is even IF one of those players are out there, on priority, with the most PF in the league, I'm picking 10th with only the two 3-0 teams picking waivers behind me. I mean... was Heath Miller really undrafted in 12 team leagues? My 12 team league has 23 TE's rostered, and Miller is surely in that group. Brown was long gone before I could get him as a one week Giants starting RB. So was Barden. Little Hawk was gone after his breakout game too. Players in a keep two league like mine... even Blackmon was drafted, and is unlikely to be dropped in the hope he develops for next year. I WW'ed Hill BEFORE week one, a post draft WW pickup for me. I'd have never sniffed his shorts otherwise. Kerley went long before I had a shot too. Sure, these players are top adds, but they aren't there when I have a 10th WW priority out of 12 teams. Bidding leagues are different, you can over pay for a player you like. If I dropped Hill... one decent game and I'd never see him again. I've put in for players like Choice, Barden, Brown etc etc... all gone before I get to claim off the WW. Even Morris was drafted in my league, along with Helu and two other Redskin RB's. I did drop Gerhart for the AZ D... before everyone knew how good that defense was. (before the Philly game)So, I'm in a holding pattern on Hill. Maybe my situation is unique, but I find that hard to beleive. When I WW'd B Powell, it was before the week 3 Miami game, or I'd never have gotten him either.

I dunno Rovers, Id say some may be in for a real shock expecting to see R. Williams on the wire in some leagues. Im also holdin onto Hills (without so much need/desire to start him) However if I keep him for next Season (I could view him as my 20th something rnd pick) Matter of fact my drops are usally the bpa on the wire. (Currently both Little n Baldwin are on waiver's)
