Dunta Robinson fined.... (1 Viewer)

Rule changes or not he puts his head down. Put it this way, were any of you coached to tackle like that? I'm positive you will not find a coach using this form in tackling drills.

It's see what you hit. If he's not leading with his head, his head would be facing up and he would be looking at Maclin and able to direct where he's leading his shoulder. Watch the replay. He head/facemask is facing down and he's looking down when he goes in to hit Maclin. That's leading with your helmet and not a legal play.
:goodposting:
so what's in between the two outstretched arms? A helmet right?Sure Geoffrey in the NFL would be fun, but until they start signing giraffes, their necks aren't going to be long enough to offer a different angle as you suggest

The people defending this hit have to be fishing.Nobody can be that blind and not seeing that he clearly dropped the head to hit him. Its not even close.
He dropped the shoulder into Maclins shoulder. Unfortunately his head was also attached to his body.

 Big differance between meeting a guy face up, chest to chest, and inentionally throwing a shoulder at someones head. With the way the rules are written, they could have, and arguably should have, flagged Jenkins (although most of us would argue the rule is un-necessarily and unrealistically strict in regards to QBs)...but there's a world of differance between these two hits. The Jenkins tackle is much MUCH closer to being textbook or clean.
His helmet smashes straight into Ryans head.
I agree....it could have, and possibly should have, been flagged...but in no way was it remotely worthy of a fine. For one...he did NOT lead with his helmet...in fact, contact with Ryans head was incidental to contact with the rest of Ryans body, whereas Robinson AIMED FOR THE HEAD, and had very little contact aside from the head/shoulder area.HUGE differance and if you can't see it, then I don't know what else to say.

HA!

This safety & fining committee is pure BS. Cullen Jenkins got fined...$15k. Picture at link shows the hit he got fined for. Got to love his quote on it too.

"You can punch somebody and only get fined $10,000," Jenkins said. "You do an honest mistake, it's not like I launched at him …"
I agree punching someone is worse, but hasn't helmet to helmet contact to a QB been illegal for a while now? Refs should have thrown a flag on the play but they missed it. The NFL has been pretty consistent in protecting the QBs the last decade (for better or worse)

For those complaining that Robinson was just going in for a hit, that Maclin ducked into the hit, etc, etc. take a look at this video and see how you properly tackle someone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhpaMxvvAwg

Now, this happened before "defenseless player" penalties were enforced, but you can see this could fall under that category. There's even some helmet contact, but I don't think this is deserving of a penalty (unlike Robinson's). Here are just some differences that I see:

1. Willis is using his arms to wrap up. His goal is clearly to TAKCLE Bush, not knock him out. Robinson's hit, there's no arm motion whatsoever. He just lines up Maclin, and throws his upper body (shoulder, head, whatever) into Maclin's head/upper chest.

2. Robinson is still standing after the hit. When he's leading with his shoulder/head and still standing, it's impossible to hit Maclin anywhere lower than his shoulder/neck area. P-Will aims for Bush's center of gravity, and this of course means he has to aim much lower, which means he's diving.

3. Bush lowers his head much more than Maclin does, and there's definitely helmet-facemask contact, but it's just grazing. This is what happens when you aim for the lower body.

4. Related to #3, you can see as the top of P-Will's helmet grazes Bush's facemask, P-Will is actually raising his head up so that he's looking at Bush. This means he's not using his helmet as a weapon, he's looking to see where Bush is to make sure he has a sure tackle. As they go to the ground, P-Will is staring at Bush's face. Completely different from Robinson, who's not looking at Maclin at all, just looking down and hoping he delivers a big hit.

5. Finally, and maybe most importantly, P-Will is fired up for making a great play and both players get up uninjured and ready to play more football.

If you watch the play, it is obvious that he is trying to pop Maclin in the face/chin with the top of his helmet. It is a dirty and dangerous play, and completely unnecessary. The entire point of the new rules against hits like this is that the helmet should not be used as a weapon. Why? Because we are starting to learn what the long term consequences of those kind of hits are.

Robinson had an opportunity to put a hard, clean hit on Maclin. Instead, he tried to knock Maclin's head off with the top of his helmet.

You guys who say this is a good, clean hit are nuts. It is clearly head hunting... chin hunting, in my opinion.

What is so hard to understand about this? Yes, it is a violent sport. So is boxing. In boxing, you cannot hit below the belt. This isn't that different.
