[Dynasty] Has Mike Thomas reached his ceiling? (1 Viewer)

I'm looking at Mike Thomas right now on the back end of my dynasty roster. He seems like a nice player but I get the sneaking suspicion that a guy like Emanuel Sanders might be more valuable to me heading into the offseason. Jack Del Rio is a good but not great coach. Same with Garrard. This team always seems to put a C+ product on the field. MJD and Karim appear to have the ground game pretty well in hand and with the success the Jags have had rushing, I don't see them changing philosophy any time soon. Nor do the coaches appear to be on the hot seat any more.

So Mike Thomas 2011 looks to be very similar to Mike Thomas 2010...inconsistent guy that you can use in a pinch but cannot really count on. He's a good WR3 and a pretty nice WR4. Does he really have any upside even though he's still young. I only see his stat sheet, don't think I've watched a Jacksonville game he's played in so I'm looking for something maybe that doesn't show up on the leaderboard.

I agree with you. Emmanuel probably has more upside to become a WR2 someday. Thomas, despite key injuries to Sims-Walker and Marcedes as well as a pretty good year out of Garrard, has not been very valuable in non-ppr and only modestly so in ppr. Garrard isn't apparently going anywhere.

I don't see him pushing to heights much higher than his current level of performance in the next couple of years.

You really think he's hit his ceiling in his rookie year? It will take him a year or two to adjust just like everyone else. He will get open more often and produce more. I'm pretty high on him, actually. Sanders is a nice player, too, though. I'd stick with Thomas, though, all things considered.

This is his sophomore year. The one thing he does have going for himself is that MSW is a resticted free agent this year. It's a possibility someone ponies up a pick for him and takes him off the Jags' hands. In that case Mike Thomas would definitely see an uptick in targets, but the odds of MSW leaving aren't great.

I'd say we've seen Mike Thomas' ceiling until he leaves Jacksonville or there's a regime change that brings in a new QB.

Realistically though, what is going to change next year? His coaching and system aren't changing. This team isn't going to suddenly eschew MJD when that is what keeps the coaching staff employed.

I think the better way to say it...and I'm pretty sure it is what you are saying, is that due to near term situation (team, coach, QB), Thomas is close to his ceiling, which is a decent wr4/5 in ppr. If you put him in a slot role for a Brady, Manning, Bradford etc type of situation I think the ceiling goes way up. IMO, one of the hard decisions that Dynasty owners have to make is around keeping/trading good but not great players in mediocre situations. If you know the situation could change quickly then it isn't as hard, but in this case it does appear he could be stuck in this situation for a few more years.

That is kind of where I am at with Thomas as well. I may dump him before the deadline just to have a better option heading into next year.

Thomas has shown potential...Emmanuel Sanders hasn't shown much. Easy decision.

I'd say that Sanders may have a higher near term ceiling but Thomas has a higher long term ceiling, esp in PPR. I think Sanders has a good chance to be a WR2 type of guy that will mainly be running routes down the field near the sideline. But I think Thomas is much more than a slot guy. I think he can be a do everything guy, other than fly routes down the sideline, and be a true WR1. I'm not sure Sanders has that upside and as I write this Wallace goes right down the middle of the field for a TD. He's your long term WR1 there. But MSW is not, in my opinion, your long term WR1 in Jacksonville, regardless of coach, QB or scheme. Too inconsistent with injuries. Thomas has a shot. Keep him if you play PPR.

Of course soon after I type this Sanders make a couple of nice catches in the middle of the field. Guess it really all depends on how high you are on Thomas.
