Dynasty League Question... (1 Viewer)

I'm the commish of a very detailed Dynasty / Auction league. We're in year 4 and I've got a problem that's been brought up for the first time. We have a retirement clause built-in to the rules...it reads like this...

If a player retires from the NFL, his owner can choose to either:a) immediately void his contract, eliminating all salary cap burden for the player, and relinquishing any future rights to the player.b) Immediately pay 10% (rounded up) of the player's current-year contract to retain the rights to that player throughout the length of the player's current contract. The 10% is applied to the current year only, but the owner retains the rights to the player for the duration of the contract. Example: Owner A has Player X under contract in 2003, 2004, and 2005. During the 2003 season, Player X retires, and Owner A chooses to pay 10% (rounded up) of his current year contract, and retains the right to obtain Player X in 2003-2005 should that player choose to return to the NFL. If that occurs, the player will return under his previous contract.

We have an owner who has Charles Rogers signed to 5 year deal (starting in 2005) and he is trying to say that he is now retired. We're having discussions about the definition of retirement. Anyone know the official NFL rules for retirement? If you just suck and get cut are considered retired from the NFL? Any info or similar experiences would be helpful and appreciated. -PR

Is Rogers still on the guys roster? If he cut him without bringing this issue up, he's out of luck.

If he still has Rogers on his roster, sounds like a league discussion is in order.

Few players that actually file for their NFL retirement come back.

I should've of explained the league better...When you cut someone you pay a penalty of 25% of the salary for every year you had them signed to. For example, He signed Chuck to a 5 year contract in 2005 for 3 dollars. That looks like this...2005 - $32006 - $42007 - $52008 - $62009 - $7Since he cut him in 2006 he has to pay 25% each year...2006 - $12007 - $1.252008 - $1.502009 - $1.75Make sense?? He wants to wipe the penalties off his books by considering him retired

No relief imo unless Rogers actually files to retire. From wikipedia.

After his release, Rogers worked out for the Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2006, all of whom passed. Reportedly, Rogers worked out for the Kansas City Chiefs in January of 2007 and flopped the workout by running a 40-time of 4.8, which was a steep decline from the 4.28 that he ran at the Indianapolis Combines four years prior. According to reports, he is going to attempt to make it in the CFL this year. [2]

The more interesting question is what possessed him to sign Charles Rogers to a five year contract?

This is an issue in our salary cap dynasty league as well, since players that suck (like Rogers, Tim Couch, Maurice Clarett, etc.) don't really formally retire - they just get cut and don't ever get signed again.

So, there's no way you can get retirement relief.

The only time we've really seen our retirement relief rules come into play is when an "important" player retires and holds a press conference (think John Elway, Emmitt Smith), or if there is significant, irrefutable evidence that the player will not play again (think Darrent Williams, Mack Strong, Terrence Murphy).

Of course, Junior Seau formally retired after 2005, with a speech and all, then signed with the Pats for the next season, so there's always going to be exceptions...
