Dynasty & Redraft: WR Mike Williams, Free Agent (1 Viewer)

williams could have a Colston type rookie year. Except for Dez Bryant theres not a better Rookie wide out there - he has a past of being a head case but if thats under control he could be a monster for many years. Benn was taken much earlier but Benn isn't even in MW's area code in talent.
FWIW, the Buffalo News (Williams is from the city) ran a few pieces awhile back about how he'd changed his ways after getting kicked out of Syracuse. He was saying all the right things - "I have to keep working hard", "I don't want to let my teammates down" - and then he got back into Cuse and did the same stupid #### as before.

I'm pretty far removed from his past but it seems like half the group thinks he is a perennial idiot set up to fail, the other half seem to think he has changed his ways for good...whether or not you drafted him in dynasty leagues probably has something to do with where you fall into these 2 categories. The thing that I have heard is that there was a miscommunication with the coach not being able to get in touch with him and that he thought he was kicked off, so he didn't come to practice. The coach thought he quit, he thought he was kicked off the team and by the time it came out what happened, it was too late. If that is the case, that certainly changes the perception that he is a "quitter" or a "distraction". Either way, he is doing and saying the right things right now and there is little doubt that he has talent and opportunity and those are the 2 most important ingredients in a fantasy stud cake...

I would say that is false...where you fall between these two categories probably has something to do with whether or not you drafted him. Not the other way around.

Um...isn't that what I said? Just to clarify, I think the people that drafted him think he is reformed, the ones that didn't are holding tight to their thoughts that it is only a matter of time before he flakes out again.

i'm curious to hear what people think his #'s will look like this year. will he surpass bryant's tally from last year of 39/600/4?
That will be difficult because JG's O had all the balls going to 1 WR. The only way MW has numbers like that is if the entire O is in the top 1/3 of the league. I think they will be in the top half with the possibility of being a top 10 unit if the stars align. It's really not that much of a stretch and primarily depends on Freeman. The o-line & run game are pretty good and there is no doubting Kellen Winslow is a great TE. With consistent QB play and a few WR emerging, this offense could be pretty good.

I grabbed MW in the 14th, PPR-redraft, a couple weeks ago as my WR6. Not expecting a regular starter, but pretty psyched about the flyer value there. I can start up to 4 WR/TEs each week, so very well could be a fun spot duty flex.

Williams adapts without Freeman

Williams adapts without Freeman

by Tom Balog

TAMPA _ Rookie wide receiver Mike Williams, who has become Josh Freeman’s go-to receiver, hopes that their off-field connection will not be put on the back burner while Freeman is rehabilitating his thumb fracture.

Williams has caught two passes from Freeman in the Buccaneers’ first two preseason games, and both of them led to scores by Tampa Bay.

It’s a result of their video study together as well as the timing they have developed on the practice field since Williams was drafted in the fourth round in April.

” He’s always been there helping us in the film room,” Williams said. “Hopefully he keeps doing that.

“Of course, when you’re starting quarterback comes out, you should miss a beat.

”But with Josh Johnson, it’s not really missing a beat,” Williams said. “Hopefully it won’t impact us.”

Guard Davin Joseph said the offense will have to do the rest of the preseason, what it did under Johnson and third-team quarterback Rudy Carpenter in the 20-15 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Namely, score points in bundles.

“We’re going to have to be able to adjust,” Joseph said. “It’s a real world out there. People get nicked up.

”Of course, Freeman is a special quarterback, a special talent. But Josh Johnson has a lot of features we like, too.”

The Mini Cooper tm just got traded in a dynasty league along with a first next year for McCoy.

his value is starting to really climb the charts

Very interesting. Do tell more.

He went #9 overall in our IDP rookie draft and was the 3rd WR.

1. Matthews

2. Bryant

3. Best

4. McClain

5. Spiller

6. Hardesty

7. Bradford

8. Thomas

9. Williams

Guy that took him already has the best team in the league.

WIlliams and Brown Ranked No. 6 and No. 9 Among NFC South Receivers

By: Bucs News Roundup

September 3, 2010 @ 12:28pm

ESPN blogger Pat Yasinskas is going through positions and gives his thoughts on where guys rank in the NFC South. Yesterday, Yasinskas ranked the wide receivers. Rookie Mike Williams checks in at No. 6 and veteran Reggie Brown is ranked No. 9.

Mike Williams, Buccaneers. I'm really hesitant to rank a rookie receiver this high because I've seen too many of them through the years struggle after looking great in the summer. But I think Williams might be the exception to this rule. In camp and the preseason, he's just gone out and made plays day after day. Tampa Bay needs someone to emerge as a No. 1 receiver and he seems to be leading the candidates.

Reggie Brown, Buccaneers. Someone's going to end up being the starter opposite Williams and the Bucs think Brown has a shot at securing that role. This is a guy the Bucs traded for with five years left on his contract. He's still adjusting to the system a bit, but the Bucs think he's going to fit in.

PewterReport.com's Take: Williams' spot on this list seems about right considering he has yet to play a snap in a meaningful NFL game. The fourth-round pick vaulted to the top of Tampa Bay's depth chart this offseason and performed extremely well in the preseason. In three games, Williams had seven catches for 157 yards (22.4 avg.) and he looked every bit the part of a No. 1 receiver. There is no arguing the top-3 on this list, but with a standout rookie season Williams could start to creep his way towards those guys. As far as Brown is concerned, he had a decent preseason, but was unable to secure the starting flanker position. It appears that second-year pro Sammie Stroughter, who is ranked No. 11, has won the job and he should be the starter come Week 1. Those two guys should probably be flip-flopped. Rookie Arrelious Benn is the last one ranked at No. 14. He had a great performance in the final preseason game and looks like he could be a solid contributor in the future. It may not be this year, but Benn is sure to fly up this list as well.

Wasn't practicing today. Anyone have a feeling about him going up against NO this weekend?
A VERY tough match-up based on what the Saints have yielded to opposing WRs....Saints allowing only an average of 6.8 recep/82 yds/ 0.2 TD per game to WRs... BUT, they've faced Minny (1st week w/ Favre still in training camp mode, no WRs worth throwing to at that point); 49ers; Atl (WRs got 6/70/1, but Roddy had 5/69/1 of that!!); Carolina; and AZ.Tampa Mike has been very active.... As always, it comes down to alternatives on the bench. My choice is basically Tampa Mike or Johnny Knox (who does have a SWEET match-up according to the numbers this week); I'm strongly leaning towards going w/ the guy who's been doing it for me (Tampa Mike).

Scott Reynolds of Pewter Report confirms that extension talks are "still ongoing" between the Bucs and WR Mike Williams.
Williams said last month that he was close to signing a deal with the Bucs, but there still hasn't been any tangible signs of progress. Set to earn $1.4 million in final year of his rookie contract, Williams is believed to be seeking around the five-year, $36 million deal Stevie Johnson got from the Bills last offseason.

At that price is there any way they can keep him?

2010 - 127 targets, 65 catches, 964 yards, 11 TDs

2011 - 124 targets, 65 catches, 771 yards, 3 TDs

2012 - 125 targets, 63 catches, 996 yards, 9 TDs

How many receivers in the NFL have TWO 1000/10 seasons in their first three? Those are outstanding numbers, and remarkably consistent, too. The team obviously thinks highly enough of him to give him a big money contract, he's their favorite (although not always the most consistent) target in the end zone, he has a running game that will help him get free in the red zone, and he's got a stud receiver opposite him who can keep him from getting double teamed.

He's a great value if his numbers don't improve. If they do, he could be a legit stud. Not bad for a guy you can get around pick 100.

What's not outstanding is only catching half his passes. Lance Moore was just as effective on 20% less targets.

That's probably true. But Tampa didn't just sign Lance Moore to a 40 million dollar extension. And while Moore may have caught a greater percentage of his targets, I'm fairly confident that Brees throws a better ball than Freeman. If Freeman improves, Williams should see an uptick right away. If not, then he still has some upside as a fourth year wideout in his second year with a new coach.

Williams seems unlikely to get fewer targets this season. So far he's gotten 124, 125 and 127 targets - incredibly consistent. And the targets he gets in the red zone are unlikely to go down, either. Jackson isn't a very good red zone receiver, and there really isn't another target who demands red zone looks.

The downside for a receiver you can get in the tenth round is pretty low, but the upside if Freeman improves this year is pretty substantial. I love him at his ADP.

I'm all over Tampa Mike. I have him in both leagues that already drafted and hope to get him in every other league. I'll probably miss him once or twice as I don't want to reach too much, but so far I've been taking two WR's fairly early and then filling in other starters only to go back for WR3 later and still get Mike. Yes please.

I completely agree and I have no reason not to expect few numbers this year, with some upside if he can catch a higher percentage of his targets.

I feel like it's 2010 all over again--Tampa Mike (and I'll forever call him that even though Big Mike Williams flamed out quickly the second time) is once again one of my favorite draft day bargains.

Rotoworld:

According to the Pewter Report, Mike Williams accumulated fines totaling more than $200,000 for either being late to mandatory meetings or missing scheduled rehab days following his Week 8 torn hamstring.

The report says the Bucs "grew so concerned with Williams' behavior over the last two months of the season that it was deemed immature and unprofessional." Remember that the talented wideout tumbled to the fourth round of the 2010 draft due to both off-field and desire concerns. Now that he's signed a six-year, $40.25 million contract in July of 2013, it looks like he's slipping into old habits. The report goes on to say that if Greg Schiano and Mark Dominik were back in Tampa for 2014, they would have signed Kenny Britt and considered cutting Williams if he didn't have a "great" training camp. He's set to count just $1.8 million against the 2014 cap, a purposefully low number installed by Dominik as an early out clause. The good news for Williams is that the new Lovie Smith regime brings a clean slate and the Bucs don't have any in-house replacements available. This exposure should serve as a wake-up call.

I would have kept Schiano around just on the chance he could have coaxed goodness out of Britt if signed in Tampa...could you imagine "Good Britt" alongside V-Jax?

I have serious doubts there is such a thing.

Pewter Report is usually pretty good but I'm not sure how they ran with this story. The part about Kenny Britt is absolutely bs. How do they know Kenny Britt would come here? Dominick & Schiano were living in the present. No way they were looking far enough out to have plans to replace their injured WR with an underachiever like Britt.

Mike Williams will be fine. He has great hands and is an excellent enzone target. He played a few games injured this year, so don't hold those games against him. If the Bucs get a true slot wr it will open things up.

SR of PR was actually roommates with Dominick. For him to run with this story he would have to have a solid source, and that could be MD.

The Tampa Bay Times reports Bucs WR Mike Williams has an arraignment on Feb. 24 on misdemeanor criminal mischief and trespassing charges.
The charges stem from an unspecified December incident. It's just the latest misstep from Williams, who reportedly totaled more than $200,000 in fines for being late to meetings or missing scheduled rehab days following his Week 8 torn hamstring. Williams entered the league with character concerns, but hasn’t had any off-field issues since his rookie season. He signed a six-year, $40.25 million contract extension in July and is due a $1.2 million base salary in 2014.

Party house brings more trouble for Bucs' Williams

By Greg Auman and Rick Stroud, Times Staff Writers GREG AUMANRICK STROUDTampa Bay Times

Thursday, February 20, 2014 5:38pm

TAMPA — After the parties at the rented home of Bucs receiver Mike Williams got loud enough to bring police to the gated Lutz community, neighbor John Hagensicker chatted with the responding officer, who said the first thing he noticed when the door opened was the stripper pole in the living room.

"That tells me a lot about the lifestyle those people had," said Hagensicker, 60, who endured more than a year of living next to Williams and a large number of friends who rented the 5,400-square-foot home in the Sanctuary on Livingston development, described on its web site as "a beautiful private community in a park-like setting."

That lifestyle resulted in at least five calls to 911 from June to September last year, a lawsuit and threats of eviction, with Williams, 26, agreeing in September to pay more than $43,000 in damages (plus attorney fees), extend his lease by one month (at $6,000) and surrendering a $3,600 security deposit.

Coupled with recent unrelated charges for trespass and criminal mischief that have Williams facing an arraignment on Monday, his future with the Bucs is now in question, seven months after he signed a six-year, $40 million extension.

"There's a pattern here and it's disturbing," new coach Lovie Smith said when asked about the situation at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Thursday. "No one is bigger than this football team. He has to understand that.

"Have I been disappointed in Mike Williams? Of course," said Smith, who acknowledged that the team had worked to help resolve the situation. "There's a standard. We're just not going to put up with it, no matter who it is. You have to be good on the field and off the field. Simple as that. And if you're not doing what you need to do one or the other, you have problems and that's where Mike has to take care of a few things."

Williams made it clear from the start of his time in the home, purchased by Warren Gold in 2005 for $845,500, that this fully-furnished rental was a place to throw Gatsby-level parties.

"Its going down again," he wrote on his Facebook page the weekend he moved in shortly before the 2012 Bucs season. "The biggest house party of the year September 21 … most flights and hotels is paid by me alot of special guests will be there … everything free no catch."

There was a catch, however. That Sept. 21 was the Friday night before a Bucs road game at Dallas, in Greg Schiano's first season as head coach.

Williams would match a season low with two catches in that game, and the Bucs would muster just 166 yards of offense in a 16-10 loss, their lowest total in Schiano's two seasons. It is unclear if any of Williams' teammates may have attended the party.

"It was horrible," Hagensicker said. "I despise Mr. Williams. You live in the Sanctuary, you think about the name, and it's quiet and peaceful. It's what we moved there for. … It was shocking to me. He was the absolute worst neighbor anyone can imagine."

"There were parties … just whooping it up over there," said neighbor Darryl Heiden, who lives behind the house Williams rented. "On occasion, there were a lot of cars over there, but it wasn't all the time."

According to a settlement agreement signed in November between Williams and the homeowner, the Bucs receiver acknowledged that he "continuously refused to abide by the terms" of the earlier settlement, which dictated the nearly $50,000 to cover damages to the furniture, carpet, walls and swimming pool — with other items "missing altogether."

There have been five 911 calls to the property since June, ranging from a kitchen fire to roommate Tyshawn Edwards telling police in the middle of the night he partied too much at a Bucs game and someone may have spiked his drink.

On top of the damage to the home, Williams and his friends didn't leave the property when the lease was up at the end of August, prompting a call to 911 for trespassing. After threats of eviction, he signed the September agreement.

By December, when Williams still had not paid, Gold filed a breach of contract lawsuit, and only this month has it been amended to show "notice of confidential rule," hinting at a final settlement and gag order.

Gold and his attorney, Wayne Surbur, declined comment. Neither Williams nor his agent, Hadley Engelhard, responded to requests seeking comment.

Neighbors painted a vivid picture of a year of loud chaos at all hours in the middle of a normally quiet neighborhood.

Hagensicker said parties at the house kept him up at night, with stretch limos pulling up and unloading people at 4 a.m. The parties were big enough that cars were parked on his grass, driving over his lawn as they left, leaving tracks and breaking sprinkler heads. He'd see mattresses left on the lawn and wake up to deer eating from garbage left around the house.

"I'd be laying in bed at night and couldn't sleep," he said. "Big boom boxes blaring, and it would shake my head on my pillow. I've never known people so rude and so low-class. I was astonished."

Williams' court appearance Monday relates to misdemeanor charges of trespass and criminal mischief, accused of causing up to $200 damage to a woman's front door in December.

Williams had off-field flags before the Bucs drafted him in 2010. He had been dismissed from school at Syracuse amid academic issues, returned to school then quit the team in November 2009.

Late in his rookie season, Williams was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, a charge that was dropped two months later. It's one of 16 traffic citations he has received since 2010, including a crash with property damage in 2012 and five red-light camera tickets in a span of six weeks last year.

Williams' off-field problems in the past year have come as the team actively traded away other players with outside issues — cornerback Aqib Talib and running back LeGarrette Blount were separately traded to the Patriots, and cornerback Eric Wright was released.

But Williams was embraced by the Bucs, who signed him to a six-year, $40 million extension (including $15 million guaranteed) last summer when he still had a year left on his rookie contract.

"The way he plays and practices the game is really important to me," Schiano said in announcing the extension. "We are looking for guys that are going to do things the right way and love the game of football, not like it. And this guy right here, he loves it."

Williams missed the final 10 games of 2013 with a hamstring injury, and appears to have spent a significant amount of his down time working as part of a rap group known as CMG, short for "Cave Man Group."

Songs have explicit and vulgar lyrics and Williams identifies himself as a Bucs player on some tracks. In January, he used his Twitter account to seek "10 girls" for a "video and photo shoot" offering $500 and "possibly more" each.

New coach Smith reiterated that Williams, who now lives in the Avila gated community, has some fences to mend.

"We're not going to compromise who we are as an organization," Smith said. "It takes time to get the message across completely because I haven't had a chance to have a team meeting yet. But you don't have to have a team meeting to know what's right and wrong.

"To me, guys normally respond the same way initially when you talk to them. 'Yeah, yeah, yeah.' But it's about action and what you do from here on out. I'll just say, I'm just not going to put up with a lot of that. It's as simple as that."

New Bucs general manager Jason Licht, asked what Williams had to learn, said: "He has to learn not to make headlines off the field. Start there."

Times researchers Caryn Baird and John Martin contributed to this report.

Williams was reportedly fined more than $200,000 for missing team meetings and rehab assignments last season, and is starting to rack up off-the-field issues. The fact that cutting Williams would generate a $6.4 million cap hit means his roster spot is likely safe, but the time to start making a good impression on the new brain trust is now.

Rick Stroud (Bucs beat guy) just said he doesn't think Williams will be on the team this year.

What a waste. Why can't some of these guys get their #### together.

What does he think the Bucs do? Trade him? They pretty much have to keep him until the end of 15 because of that ridiculous extension they gave him last year.

I had to get out of the car but I assume trade. Surely someone will give up a 7th for him.

Rotoworld:

After entering a written plea of not guilty Monday, Mike Williams is due in court for a pre-trial hearing on March 27 regarding his recent arrest on charges of trespassing and criminal mischief.
On December 13, Williams caused $200 in damage to the front door of Gabrielle Edwards' home. The charges are misdemeanors and should be resolved before March 27, according to Williams' attorney. It's not a major issue but is just the latest misstep from Williams. Coach Lovie Smith recently called Williams' behavior "disturbing."

I see that Williams is in hospital after being stabbed in the thigh by his brother.

I feel for anyone carrying this guy on their keeper and dynasty rosters!

He was released, so must not be that bad. Gonna have to keep an eye on @JeneBramel to get the medical scoop on a stab wound. I'm sure we will here details of the severity soon. Whether from an official statement, or in a verse on his rap groups mixtape.

Brandon Marshall's wife stabbed him a year or too ago, and in the stomach, so NBD.

Rotoworld:

Mike Williams' $6.8 million 2015 salary is not guaranteed until the third day of that league year.
There's been some confusion surrounding the six-year, $40.25 million deal Williams signed last July. Per FOX's Mike Garafolo and CBS' Jason La Canfora, the real contract shows a mere $1.2 million guaranteed salary in 2014, something the Bucs could easily get out from under. Given Williams' reported lack of dedication, off-field issues and Sunday's stabbing, he's almost certainly on the chopping block. Tampa could get an upgrade in the form of Clemson WR Sammy Watkins at No. 7 overall in May's draft.
