Dynasty Startup Draft - How important is drafting backup RBs if you only have to start one RB? (1 Viewer)

Drafting in my first dynasty startup now. It's a 16 team 51 round draft with full IDP. You only have to start one RB. You can start two thanks to a WR/RB flex. I know the standard logic is that it's better to draft injury-away or backup RBs than third or fourth WRs because only the RBs can become RB1s during the year. Does this logic hold with so few necessary starting RBs? Thanks for your opinions!!

For dynasty I would say that getting RB lotto tickets is a good thing but some of that can depend on your build and approach. In a start up some people like to punt the first year (I am not one of them) but in that case you are looking to the future so getting RB's that may be at the end of their road by the time you are aiming to compete won't be a good thing.

The answer also depends on how many WR's you can start. If you are starting 4 or 5 then the answer is to hoard WR's.

Bottom line is you need to figure out your build and plan and then shape the draft for that approach.

I would definitely stack more WRs than RBs but with 51 roster spots you should have room for both. Is there also a required TE spot and is it TE premium? If it's TE premium, stacking TEs is also helpful.

Remember this is full IDP so spots get taken up pretty quickly.

Yeah, I noticed that although I'm not sure what full IDP is. Does that mean they have to start a full 11 player defense? My biggest IDP league requires 2 DL, 2 LB and 2 DB.
I have no idea....it wasn't listed. I was just pointing out that some of those 51 roster spots will go to IDP

I get it. I would hope with 51 roster spots he's still got room for WRs, TEs, IDP and some backup RBs. I would likely get my starting WRs before drafting backup RBs but that depends on the board. I'm not drafting a WR5 over a RB2. It is dynasty so I usually go with best available and worry more about roster structure later. I recently had another owner in one of my dynasty leagues ask me how I got 7 starting RBs on my roster and wanted to trade me a WR so I gladly traded him Rachaad White for Calvin Ridley.

I think too many people reverse that (even caring about bye weeks) and it is a big error in long term success. You need players that perform for the coming years. Having a team of better players will be more beneficial than have a starting lineup of mediocre players but having everything covered.

Sorry team! The IDP starting requirements are very confusing (you have to play one of four or five different formations) but overall there are nine offensive starters and 11 defensive ones. The IDPs are broken out DT/DE/LB/CB/S.

Wow!! That's a lot! I've been playing IDP for at lest 15 years and the most I've ever had to start is 6.
