Dynasty - Which backup becomes a stud next year? (1 Viewer)

It's never too early to start talking about next year, sooo...

What current backup running back(s) do you think becomes a stud NEXT year?

I'm leaning towards Brandon Jacobs because Tiki has been talking about retirement and Jacobs looks like a beast runing the ball in the limited opportunities he has gotten. Plus, you have to figure Eli will continue to improve which should lead to more scoring.

Michael Turner has been talked about a fair amount as well, but I've seen very little of him, so I can't really make much of a judgement on him.

Any other backups have the potential?

Most likely, it'll be Turner, simply because he'll be a RFA next year, and has a pretty good chance of having a starting job somewhere next year. Guys like Jacobs and Norwood will likely still be backups, unless the guys in front of them change teams or retire.

Personally, I don't see Jacobs being as effective as an every down back as he looked as a change of pace last night. Right now, he's coming in with fresh legs after Tiki wears out the defense. As a starter, he'd still be decent, but I don't think you'd see him running guys over as much or looking so much stronger than the guys trying to tackle him.

Turner is a lock for superstardom when he gets a chance. Jacobs looks a helluva lot better than he did last year.

Jerious Norwood is a guy I like alot. Here's an excerpt from the College Dark Phoenix that I wrote last year right here at FBG's:

Jerious Norwood - RB – Mississippi State Bulldogs

6’0” 202 lbs. – Senior – 6th ranked high school RB when entering college

Rush/Receiving Stats Att Yards TDS Rec Yards TDS

Versus Houston 24 257 1 4 9 0

Jerious had a tremendous high school career where he racked up over 8,000 yards rushing at Brandon High School. He was named Mississippi player of the year after his stellar senior season. He was a highly touted recruit that also saw some limited time at QB. He was also a track standout on the prep level, as well as playing baseball and basketball.

Norwood has a wicked skill set that will translate fantastically to the NFL. First up is his game-breaking speed. He has been clocked in the high 4.4 range and has a powerful stride. The thing that stands out the most are his instincts. Norwood has had some good games against some tough competition in the SEC. He consistently knows where the cutback lanes are and his is very adept at setting up defenders in the 2nd level. He is a hard runner that is best running in the open field. That doesn’t mean he can’t excel in between the tackles. He is a determined runner that only needs the smallest of creases to break off a big gain.

Jerious Norwood has a good shot at being a star RB in the NFL. He has a good work ethic and all the natural talent in the world. He has been bothered by some ankle injuries during his college career, but none of his injuries have been serious. Jerious has made the most of his opportunities at the college level, and should continue that trend in the pros. I am very excited to see where Norwood lands in the NFL. He could be a combine standout and his value could skyrocket. I fully expect him to become a big time player at the next level.

I like Jerome Harrison too:

Jerome Harrison – RB - Washington State Cougars

5’10” 200 lbs. – Senior – 21st ranked high school RB when entering college

Rush/Receiving Stats Att Yards TDS Rec Yards TDS

Versus UCLA 34 260 2 3 12 0

Jerome had a very productive career at Central High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan where his coach was Bob Kubiak. He served as a team captain his junior and senior seasons. In his senior year he rushed for over 2,000 yards and 31 touchdowns. He committed to Eastern Michigan out of high school but ended up going to Pasadena City College. While in junior college he put up some solid numbers and was rated as the 2nd best prospect at RB coming from the JUCO level.

Harrison is a versatile runner that has returned kicks during his college career as well as carried the load at RB. He has decent vision and swivel hips that allow him to make cuts without losing much speed. He has good long speed and a quick initial burst. Harrison is limited by his size and is known to get dinged up. And for being a good athlete he has a limited array of moves in the open field. Jerome is a classic one cut runner that can be dangerous in the open field.

Jerome loves playing UCLA. Last year, in his first season with the Cougars he had 247 yards rushing and 3 touchdowns against the Bruins. Harrison is a tough kid that has a good work ethic. His versatility and dedication could lead to him being a role player on special teams in the NFL. And maybe, just maybe a shot at being a feature back.

I'm sticking with Chris Perry. one day he won't be injured :wall:

Duckett is still in the running to be a FA after this year...

All RBs? Is that all you guys think about? :(

QBs

Romo - as good as the starter next year.

Cassel - looked very good this pre-season

WRs

Hurd - TO won't play forever!

Drew Carter - ready to break out.

Jacobs placed absolutely dead last in every agility/change of direction type exercise at the combine among RB's. Don't have a link but you can look it up. It wasn't even close. That said, he ran a 4.5 40 at 11'8'' and 569 pounds. I've got mixed feelings about his prospects as a full time feature back as he has great size and great speed for someone his size but as a result has no movement skills outside of straight forward.

As far as the RB's mentioned in the subject, I like Turner. He looks like ANOTHER LT2!

Though Jacobs has looked impressive so far, I can't help but see another Dayne when I look at him. There haven't been very many big men that have sustained at a high level year in and year out not named Jerome Bettis. Duckett is a situational guy, Ironhead Heyward had one or two good years, Dayne...we know that story, Shelton...about to be cut.

Since I have Norwood and Harrison in my 32 team dynasty I am all giggly inside envisioning them being studs next year. Especially since I got them on the cheap since the other 5 backs went in the top 5 picks!

:homer: Mmmmmm. Running Backs. You are correct though. Cutler and Leinart (as long as healthy). Certainly not Young as a passer but possibly if your league scores 1 point per 5 yards rushing. Kellen clemens. I have man love for Cutler. It would be interesting to see in a fantasy world which QB, Cutler or Leinart, would do better in Arizona with those beasts at WR. Cutler is not the sexy pick but I dare say may be the better one.WR's. Kevin Curtis.A lot of people keep saying Ladell Betts and I like him but he has trouble staying healthy and his upside is limited. Travis Henry if he gets off the drugs, re-commits to a career, lands someplace in serious need of a starter, and stays healthy. These are guys not mentioned yet.

Yeah...it's quite a league. I love it. You gotta know your NFL rosters and keep a keen eye on depth charts and waiver wires. It's a 40 man roster with a 5 man practice squad.

Oh please. Turner and Jacobs being compared in the same thread is like comparing Cheeseburgers and Hamburgers. So close but oh so different. Jacobs will NEVER be a top 10 RB. Turner might never be, but it's too early to tell. He is the backup RB with the best chance of top 10 RB outside of the rookies like Maroney and D Williams. I am assuming you are talking about backup RBs who have been backups for a while now.

If not, then I say Maroney has the best chance of top 10 in 2007. Next is Turner. Jacobs will never make my list.

Sadly, Turner will likely backup LT for one more year in 07. He is a mortal lock to be a stud in his new home in 08. Jacobs is a good call - he has reinvented himself this year - it all comes down to whether Tiki retires, goes elsewhere, or comes back to the Gints.

Maroney is a no brainer for next year, and Norwood is not far behind. They are as cheap as they will ever be in dynasty leagues. Maurice Jones-Drew is a shade behind them- a big question is whether Greg Jones will be ready to roll in 07 - judging by the recovery of 05's ACL casualties, he will be. One guy to watch if he can stay healthy all year is Musa Smith in Baltimore - Billick hinted that they may have big plans for him in the future.

I think JH is too small to be a star in the league. I dont think it will be turner, because a team would have to be REALLY bold to give up a 1st and 3rd to get him. I think the first star will be Brandon Jacobs because of his combo of size, power, and speed.

Brandon Jacobs reminds me more of Rod Bernstine and/or Christian Okoye than he does Dayne or Ironhead Heyward.

He is a tall and big back, with longer strides and a lot less body fat than either Dayne or Heyward.

That doesn't suggest a long career as a featured back, since tall, upright backs who run mostly straight ahead take a lot of big shots. But that doesn't mean he couldn't be really productive for a few seasons.

This thread is giving my Dynasty team a stiffy.

Billick's called Musa their "back of the future." The question is whether the future starts next year or not. I think it depends on if Jamal can produce and stay healthy all year.
