In 2005, only 5 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before. In 2004, only 6 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before.

In 2003, only 4 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before.

In 2002, only 6 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before.

In 2001, only 6 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before.

In 2000, only 5 out of the 12 playoff teams had made it the year before.

Now you're picking 9 out of the 12 teams to make the playoffs that made it last year. In short, I think you're relying upon last year too much. There is so much luck involved in a short 16 game season that the difference between a great team last year and an average team last year is miniscule and that will be reflected many times this year when 2 teams switch fates.

Curious as to why you have Philly winning the NFC East. I don't see them having a chance against any of the other teams in that division.

Pretty sure Carson Palmer wont be winning comeback player of the year after his year last year

My prediction - The Bears will inflict pain and suffering on any offense that gets in their path to Miami

Last year was a bit of an anomoly for philly, going 6-10, having the whole TO fiasco, McNabb playing with a sports hernia the first half of the year and then missing the second half. 13 of their 22 starters ending up on IR.. a decimated offensive/defensive lineWith everyone healthy in the division, i'd break down positional rankings for the best in the division as follows..

QB - Eagles/Giants/Cowboys/Redskins

RB - Giants/Redskins/Eagles/Cowboys

TE - Giants/Cowboys/Redskins/Eagles (although very close between the 4 and easily interchangable)

WR - Cowboys/Redskins/Giants/Eagles

Offensive line - Eagles/Redskins/Giants/Cowboys

(on depth alone, discounting starters, the eagles would be first in every position)

DT's - Eagles/Cowboys/Redskins/Giants

DE's - Giants/Eagles/Redskins/Cowboys

LB's - Cowboys/Redskins/Giants/Eagles

CB's - Eagles/Cowboys/Redskins/Giants

S - Eagles/Redskins/Cowboys/Giants

With all rosters healthy, the eagles have the best QB and offensive line in the division.. Westy is a beast and will get all the chances to prove it this year with a more balanced run game. The WR is the obvious weak spot on offense, but McNabb has done well with a worse group circa 2002/2003

Defensively the eagles have argueably the most talented and deep overall defensive line (giants have the best DE combo in usi and strahan) and the best secondary in the divison by far. They have the weakest LB core with a strong anchor in trotter in the middle..

Bottom line, the NFC east is going to be a complete dogfight and ANY of the 4 teams can come out on top in the division and i wouldn't be suprised at all with any of the 4 teams winning it. But, you can not count philly out after last year. I cant reitterate enough how badly injuries and the whole TO fiasco completely decimated that team.. Underrate them if you like, but they are going to bounce back in a big way

Woops. I was just putting them in without thinking about where they finished.

You could do a parallel analysis for any set of playoff predictions. (If you don't agree, post your playoff picks and I'll show you.) But picking playoff teams to make the playoffs has a much higher success rate than picking nonplayoff teams to make the playoffs.

Just some quick observations:

*Washington is going to disappoint many people this year. I see them as no better than 3rd in that division.

*Arizona is WAY over-rated. Although exciting to watch, they still don't have a defense.

*Many people down on Atlanta and Philly. I think both will bounce back this year. Last year was an anomaly and this is coming from someone who HATES Vick. Little secret for you guys: you don't NEED a great WR to win. This comes as a surprise to some, but it's true. Philly, Atlanta, Tampa, NE and Seattle have all won a lot of games the last few years with average to above average WR.

*edit* I also only see 4 LOCKS to make the playoffs, Chicago, Denver, Indy, Seattle. The NFC teams are only included because of how piss-poor their divisions are.

The Cardinals D ranked 8th last year and 12th the year before. In the NFC, an average defense is more than enough with a good offense.

Here's something I never get when I some predictions. Why wouldn't you have the team with the best record making it to the Super Bowl? To make them the 1 seed you must think they're really good, probably the best team in their conference (I don't think too many people put much emphasis on SOS). Then on top of that your best team in the conference has HFA.

We both know that numbers don't tell the whole story many times. That defense was constantly exposed last season. They gave up 30 points to the texans if I remember correctly.

Now that the Draft is over and FA is tapped out of major impact players, things are starting to take shape. So what are your early predictions at the divisonal races as well a playoff teams?

Only one team in the NFC East making it into the playoffs, huh?

They don't tell the whole story, but I don't think Arizona has a horrible defense. Saying they still don't have a defense overstates it IMO.

OK, I'll conceed that putting 11 highway cones out there would be worse than fielding their defense. ;) Seriously though, I don't think their defense is even 'average' as you put it. Not a horrible 'fantasy' defense though.....

I see them starting off slow because of the injury to Palmer, then catching fire and going on a tear midway through the season. They will be better than their record says and they will proove it in the playoffs.

Curious as to why you think a team that went 10-6, finished very strongly, won one playoff game on the road, and addressed their biggest problem spot with 2 FA signings(WR) will disappoint this year? I'm not saying you're wrong, but I think that the burden of proof here is on you to at least put forth some sortsortsortsortsoret of argument.

Only one team in the NFC East making it into the playoffs, huh?
That division is too tough... they will beat up on each other and doing so will open the door to a worse team making the wild card... (Arizona, Tampa Bay or Detroit).

When is the last time a Super Bowl loser made the playoffs the next year? I certainly wouldn't call Denver a lock in that division. Indy could easily falter after last year's disapointment, losing Edge, and the division improving by leaps and bounds. Chicago last year was remarkably similar the the team a few years ago that got all of the breaks in the regular season, went 13-3, and then lost at home in the 2nd round of the playoffs(their first game). Next year they came back to earth. Minnesota finished very strongly. I don't think there are any locks.....very much a crapshoot.

You might think that some teams will start out slowly due to youth or new pieces learning to play together and lose a few games early but then really turn it on late and ride that momentum to the Super Bowl. I think a team like Miami could be a prime example of that this year.

Again, I think Chicago and Seattle are near locks because of their division. Both are clearly the best teams in their divisions. Chicago returned all their starters and has a bad Lions team, a worse GB team and a mediocre Vikes team all twice on their schedule. Seattle lost Hutchenson (huge loss, granted) but added several pieces to their defense, plus Buerlson to their WR corp. Maybe lock is a strong word, but their schedule+their division= playoffs IMO.As for Denver, I simply think they are the best team in the AFC this year. Solid team last year and they only got better. I think they'll pick up a cap casuality RB and they'll be set there. Indy I think will miss Edge terribly, but I still see them as the class of their division.

Again, 'lock might have been too strong, but I think those 4 teams are as close as they come.

*edit* Also the Bears lost their starting QB early. I don't exactly call that 'getting all the breaks'. Actually, it's the worst thing that could happen to most teams.

If the Patriots dont win the AFC East I will eat my hat.

The Dolphins are a 9-7 team this year not the Super Bowl contender that I see many predicting them to be.
