Per Yahoo Colon gave up 8 runs, only one earned (in the first). How is Colon only charged with 0 ER during the next inning? I thought there needed to be a 2-out error before all runs become unearned?

Top 2nd: Minnesota

- J. Morales singled to center

- M. Tolbert singled to right, J. Morales to second

- N. Punto safe at first on third baseman W. Betemit's throwing error, J. Morales to third, M. Tolbert to second, J. Morales scored, M. Tolbert to third, N. Punto to second

- D. Span grounded out to third

- J. Mauer hit sacrifice fly to center, M. Tolbert scored

- J. Morneau intentionally walked

- J. Kubel singled to right, N. Punto scored, J. Morneau to third

- M. Cuddyer homered to deep left, J. Morneau and J. Kubel scored

- J. Crede homered to deep left

- J. Morales flied out to deep right

- D. Span grounded out to third Should be runner on 2nd with 2 outs, run wouldve scored on grounder anyway, so it counts as an earned run

- J. Mauer hit sacrifice fly to center, M. Tolbert scored Shouldve been the 3rd out so this run and all following runs are unearned

- J. Morneau intentionally walked

- J. Kubel singled to right, N. Punto scored, J. Morneau to third

- M. Cuddyer homered to deep left, J. Morneau and J. Kubel scored

- J. Crede homered to deep left

Doesnt have to be a 2 out error. But to figure out earned runs you gotta go thru the inning as if the out was made. According to my calcs he shouldve been charged with 1 ER in the 2nd. See my edits.

Mauer's fly should have been the 3rd out. Nothing that scored from that point on (including this rbi) is earned. It doesn't have to be an error with 2 outs. It's an error that results in runs after there should have been 3 outs.

If the guy who was on third couldn't score on the groundout, how can you say the guy who would have been there but for the error would ahve scored anyhow?

 Jose Morales scored on the throwing error. If the out was made, he wouldve been on 3rd with 1 out and wouldve scored on Span's ground out.

Might be a judgment call by the official scorer? Just thinking out loud here, no idea if the official scorer even has that right but if it were a play in which the 3B could've held Morales and made the out I can see how him being an unearned run could be justified.

Yeah and right now Colon is not being charged with an earned run in that inning so that may be the case. Not sure reallyOh I see what Palmer is saying. When Span grounded out the runner on 3rd stayed put so the official scorer basically said Morales wouldnt have scored either. I agree with Palmer now. I missed that originally.

Throwing error would have gotten an out and left runners on 1st and 3rd (I believe the play was at second base) for OUT #1.The next batter grounded to third base. You can't assume the runner would score. OUT #2.

Mauer flied out (instead of a sac fly) for OUT #3.

No runs could have been expected to score = 0 ER.

Its the official scored decision (he can assume). In this case, since the new runner on 3rd didnt score then Morales wouldnt have scored.
