Elder Abuse (1 Viewer)

An absolutely atrocious practice in the name of profit and big government:

It's amazing that we will ensure a murderer doesn't have his due process violated, but allow the judicial system to trample on people who's only crime was coming under the attention of a greedy guardian.

According to Parks’s calculations, the Norths had roughly fifty thousand dollars. Parks transferred their savings, held at the Bank of America, to an account in her name.
ETA: Not left or right big government, but the worst kind of all, where those in small positions of powers entrench themselves and extend control over innocent people's lives all in the name of making a buck.

I'm not sure I get it. I did not read the whole thing, but I read most of the info about the Norths. Maybe I missed it.

How does one just take guardianship over old people. Especially when they have a daughter that lives 10 minutes away. And why did they not call her right away. What exactly were the embarrassed by?

The gist is someone thought the two had more assets than they did and were likely paid for the guardianship recommendation.

April Parks started the guardianship legal process with no notice to any member of the North family and had herself declared Guardian.

With no notice, she came into the North's house, moved them to an assisted facility that day (and had them threatened with jail if they failed to comply) and notified no other family members.

Once the North's daughter became aware of what happened, the courts refused to change the guardian, until tales of elder abuse began to be published by Nevada papers.

In that time, Parks sold all of the North's possession, transferred all funds to her account and spent them down to zero on fees for her service.

ETA: The North's couldn't call. Their guardian didn't give them access to a phone and there was no phone in their new domicile.

How does this happen, or maybe a better question, how is this legal.

It's in the article.  There's a terrible corner in hell for people that do this.  I'm pretty positive I'd find a way to destroy the life of anyone that did this to my parents.

How does the daughter not instantly know this is happening?  I cannot get to the article from work for some reason but don't people typically talk to their parent at least 1x per week?

When she went to their house after the weekend, they were just gone.

Up to the point where she thought they were legitimate kidnapped (which they kinda were).

I talk to my folks once a week or so. It'd take me at least a month to start reaching out, so I can understand some delay. Then, her folks weren't given any way to contact her.

This is sickening.  Those people deserve to die a slow painful death.

Reuters has a great expose on adoptions that don't work out: http://www.reuters.com/investigates/adoption/#article/part1

The Guardianship cases feel like to bookend to the Child Exchange. People gaming the system to take advantage of the disadvantaged.

The central guardian in the story was convicted, but none of the judges, attorneys or doctors that were complicit in the scheme have been so much as reprimanded.

happens more than you think

we have to take an annual course on looking for the warning signs. it's a serious problem.

Elder abuse in general, or shady guardianship applications?
elders guardians taking financial advantage. most often occurs with immediate family members. sons/daughters/grandchildren taking advantage of diminished capacity and fleecing grandma/grandpa.
