Elderly dog - anybody give their pets CBD? (1 Viewer)

Anybody have any experience with CBD?

My almost 12 year old Presa is limping and clearly favoring her shoulder.

She started limping about a year ago and we got her on Librella. That was a miracle drug for awhile until we noticed her dragging her rear leg. Side effect of the Librella. We got her off the Librella and on galliprant. She seems to have regained a lot of feeling in her rear leg but now the shoulder pain is more pronounced.

Reality is she’s an almost 12 year old 135lb. mastiff and there’s o my so much I can do. I’m just trying everything I can to make her last year or two the best I can for her.

This is going to almost kill me. Hands down the best dog I’ve ever had and I loved my other dogs.

Looks like there’s limited data to suggest they can ameliorate pain from arthritis, but dosing will be problematic in a big dog. I’d ask your vet.

I would but unfortunately I don’t trust my vet. They insisted that the Librella has “virtually no side effects”. I should have read the Librella fact sheet and not blindly trusted her.

When I brought my dog in because she was dragging her legs I got a “fill-in” doctor who asked a few questions about her symptoms and the Librella that led me to look into the Librella more.

When I raised my concerns at the next apponment that the Librella could be causing the lameness she looked me in the eye and told me that Librella is not know to cause lameness in the rear.

Here’s the fact sheet. Links feature not working for me:https://www.zoetisus.com/content/_a...-inserts/librela-client-information-sheet.pdf

Sorry for your experience. As an aside every drug/medication/supplement has potential side effects. This includes CBD products, FWIW.

You are right about the data. Seems like a lot of wishful thinking/placebo.
Yup. And CBD products are ripe for the appeal to nature fallacy I’ve repeatedly ranted against in medical threads.

On the flip side, some healthcare professionals are unfairly biased against non-conventional therapies.

Tough decision any way you cut it. I feel for you, and hope your pup doesn’t suffer, whatever your decision.

My little lady is almost 15. CBD didn't do anything for her. But she weighs 17 pounds lok

Holy crap we did librella for about a year and it definitely appeared to stop working, I never read the pamphlet. My pup really starting to drag her back legs but she's been off that for a while

TBF older dogs do lose some control back there but it’s definitely a major side effect.

I’m glad you mentioned that it wore off because I kinda noticed that too.

With the major shoulder limp returning we’re at a crossroads… what’s better? No pain but potentially can’t walk or pain and limping.

We’re close to the end and I won’t let her suffer but we’re not there yet.

We switched to Adequan for her cartilage and it appears to be helping for now

I’ll look into it thank you so much.

Haven't done CBD yet for my boy, but he's on carprofen for inflammation and osteoporosis. It definitely helps and is on the low dose spectrum so you can get something stronger as you go.

Looks like it's time for a new vet. One who reads the literature, preferably.
To be fair, it looks like Librella-associated lameness occurred in only 2.2% of dogs, compared to 0.7% of controls. So, three times as likely, but the absolute risk is quite low.

Meanwhile, improvement in pain was seen in just under half the dogs given the med for up to 3 months, versus 17-36% of controls, who received saline placebo. Don’t know how this compares to other agents used to relieve doggie pain, but seems like a decent treatment effect overall.

Loss of efficacy may be due to the canine’s immune system developing antibodies to the drug. So it’s not a long term solution.

Is a 1 in 50 risk of lameness (plus a handful of other significant side effects) worth a coin flip for temporary pain control, when other options exist?

We tried sticky grip pads for the hardwood but they kept falling off. Seriously considering getting like booties or something cuz she has trouble. Just standing on the floor now

Had a friend put her dog on cbd after it had bone cancer and said it made a night and day difference for the dog, so I tried when I noticed my 14yo boy was going down hill and it didn’t appear to do anything for him. Sad to hear you’re guy is struggling.

14yo golden doodle. Blind due to cataracts and very very hard of hearing. Started developing arthritis about 2 years ago. Vet gave us an oral steroid that we give him (don't really notice that much difference) and we've been giving him joint/cartlidge pills also. He's been having more and more difficulty w/ the wooden floors, so we bought him those booties that strap around his paws...................only trouble is he doesn't want you to put them on and will nip at you and bark (only time he's ever done this). So we just let him be and pick him up when needed. I know the booties will work. I think I may try to put them on while giving him an outside bath, as he' really chill then.

Good luck.
