Eli Manning cleared to play on Sunday if he can handle pain (1 Viewer)

According to the link below, Eli's test results were sent to Dr James Andrews who agrees with the initial diagnosis. Mort was just on ESPN and said that he stands by his sources but that Eli is week to week and the Giants must protect Eli from returning too quickly.

That is AWESOME news. As a Giants fan, I am not concerned about one or two weeks. I am concerned about Eli's career. If we are talking a pain management issue, that must mean that throwing can not further injure Eli (although using a different motion from pain COULD cause other problems to appear). Very very good news.

Hopefully the Giants are smart about this and if Eli needs a week or two, he gets it. The kid really looked good in the game against the cowboys. He would have looked that much better if not for a number of drops.

A second opinion on Eli Manning's injured right shoulder was the same as the first opinion: It's a sprained A-C joint and if he can tolerate the pain, he can play. The Giants sent Manning's MRI to Dr. James Andrews -- a noted orthopedic surgeon who operates out of Birmingham, Alabama -- and he informed them today that he agreed with their initial diagnosis. He saw no structural damage in Manning’s shoulder, and saw no reason to think he could damage it by playing this week.So now it’s up to Manning. If the pain in his shoulder decreases, or if he can tolerate it, he can play against the Green Bay Packers in the Giants’ home opener. If not, he’ll sit out and Jared Lorenzen will get the call. The Giants are also convinced that even if Manning can’t play this week, that he will definitely be ready to go in two weeks when they play the Redskins in Washington on Sept. 23.* *

Hefty Lefty looked good in preseason the last two years. The team gets all fired up when he comes in too. I'm curious how they do with him at QB as much as how he does.

How exactly do you "stand by your sources" and then report something entirely different? I'm not trying to bash Mort because I like him and respect him as a reporter but it doesn't take much to come out and admit your sources were wrong. It's OK; it happens all the time in professional sports. Sorry for the hijack.

His source said "separated shoulder" so he stands by him despite two doctors' opinions?

Near as I can figure, Mort is changing the time out from a month to week to week, but not ascknolwedging the sprained AC joint rather than a separated shoulder (assuming there's a difference)

Bottom line: His source(s) was/were wrong. And again, that's ok. Nobody expects or should expect a reporter to get things like this right 100% of the time. It's the nature of the business. I can appreciate Mort saying he has good sources. I'm sure that's true. But in this case, the info they gave him appears to have been wrong and it shouldn't be that difficult to just admit that rather than try and cover it up with a case of semantics.Back on topic: this is certainly great news for the Giants and for Ward in particular. His value as a replacement for Jacobs is considerably stronger if Manning is the QB as opposed to the big fella.

Yeah, it's not like he's wrong a lot. He got the Vick not getting indited right. He also got Culpepper starting week one too!

Whew. Great news for the Giants and my fantasy team!
Very good news for Burress owners as well as Manning owners
Probably, but it could be short term gain for long term loss. If he gets injured more severely instead of letting it heal more fully, Eli could be out for a longer time period. Also, his performance could take a hit if he is playing at 80-85%. Obviously, we'll all just have to see what happens.

Maybe not. Eli is week to week. If he misses this week and next week and the following week and the week after that he's out a month. My wife works in a hospital and her friend worked for the x-ray department. One year they did an x-ray on Flyer Keith Primeau and he had a broken rib. The Flyers listed him as day to day. My wifes friend said, he'll be out at least a month. Sure enough, Primeau was out for 6 weeks with the broken rib. Just because the team says he's week to week doesn't mean he won't miss a month as was initially reported.
