The Last of Us was a GREAT game, but the character model wasn't her. Her game at the same time was "beyond two souls." ... The last of us ripped off her likeness and then tweaked her age DOWN. You are starting to mix things up Gordon.

I suppose if it were a sports star then maybe because it might be interesting to see how it affects the locker room dynamic or something. Actor or actress? Not really. I put it right up there with "I don't like blue." It wouldn't make me watch their movies and enjoy them any more or less than I do now.

I suspect it was a career move.

She could have come out at any time, it's a not so well guarded secret in the industry for a very long time. It would have been more impressive if she came out during the height of her fame, post Juno.

But her last film, The East, bombed. More to point, she got critically panned in it. Her one "gimme" film, post Oscar nomination, to prove her box office chops, Whip It, failed. She had a non memorable part in Inception. There was that anti establishment super hero film, Super, where she tried to show herself as sexually aggressive that didn't make any money. That she's associated with the X men franchise, this was her last shot while her name would buzz once more to try to get some momentum going.

It's not her fault she looks like shes 16, and probably will most of her life. But it's limiting on the parts she can get. She simply doesn't look old enough to hold a film's female lead category for most adult oriented films.

Juno was in 2007, she's a couple of steps away from having to do television full time.

Maybe the saddest part is she looks just a few shades too old to play Ellie in The Last Of Us, the video game that will be turned into a film and a decent chance to be a hit or maybe a franchise, even though they stole her likeness without paying her.

What no one seems to mention when someone comes out, is the fallout. When Zachary Quinto came out, it outed Hayden Pantierre as a beard, which exposed Milo Ventimiglia and Scotty McKnight, which in turn, shone some light onto Mark Sanchez.

Might be great for Ellen Page, but she sort of left Alexander Skarsgard, who needs his leading man appeal with women to stay established, out hanging in the wind.

So Pantierre played the part with Quinto meaning she may have done the same with Ventimiglia, McKnight, and Sanchez?

Page was rumored to have dated Skarsgard which calls into question whether that was a "beard" too? Is Page wearing the beard?

I thought I followed this stuff too much.

Not sure about the others, but Sanchez and McKnight are both gay.

In fairness, Rock was closeted his entire life, even when he announced he had AIDS.

And not to say its impossible, but there has never been an out male movie "star" as far as a lead who can carry a movie. Not to say its impossible to have happen, but film is not television (but I'll grant you Parsons and Harris are significant stars who are out).

Rupert Everett went from being the next big thing to having his career destroyed by coming out.

The relative lack of openly gay movie stars is interesting.

I'm sure it's much of it's coincidence, but you'd have to think there have to be a few bigger stars that play in more traditional roles closeted.

The difference with TV is interesting (if it's more than just a coincidence at this point).

TV gives the audience more time to get to know the character, more storylines, and more of an ensemble cast, so I'd think that helps.

It's not just "hey come watch this guy we just paid $15 mill to run around and kick everyone's ### for 90 minutes and get the girl in the end".

Shouldn't matter, but movies are such a big risk anyway. I could see it being tough to trust it won't impact the audience.

It's really a tragic story though. Clearly no man has ever hit it right, so she feels she has to resort to this. I could straighten her out in an afternoon.

I woke up at 6:00 am today and was sort of bombarded with it. My DIL has taken to posting congrats on her FB page each and every time someone comes out. Then it was all over the morning news. So I basically came in to ask the question I asked.

She's pregnant and extremely hormonal, so I didn't ask. Her brother made a comment pretty much to the effect of "Who cares?" and she got a bit uppity that he would dare question the importance of it all.

The way people obsess over celebrities and the fact that homosexuals are statistically a small subset of the population means IMO that it will always be of interest to the public.

Plus it's about sex - that pretty much guarantees it will always be headline material as well.

But it will be an awesome day when sexual orientation is merely of interest like any other interesting aspect of a celebrities life.

 
Part of the reason a celeb coming out is so highly celebrated is that the news outlets, reporters, social commentators and the rest like a new occasion to reaffirm their support of gay rights. I'm not saying this is a nefarious motive, but it is a feel-good cycle that keeps everyone in the press.

When a hot female celebrity like Ellen Page says "I'm gay", it is newsworthy because she's technically saying, "I like eating #####. Just friggin love it. Burying my face all in there while I reach up and fondle the boobies. Yep, big fan of it...
