See, I really agree on the bolded, so we're two for two. I was bringing up Russell Kirk and Trump in here not too long ago, and from my limited understanding, Kirk had a great sense of order and what it meant in society. We're a liberationist society (which actually appeals to my temperament) and we need those structures in place to check democratic and rights excesses, IMO.Gotcha, somewhat.
Before i took my hiatus from FFA in the spring of '13, i was on quite a bit about our societal problems being rooted in having offered personal freedom to such a great portion of our population - women, non-whites, alternative lifestylers - while simultaneously disposing of, ignoring or revolutionizing three of the four pillars of society - family, parish, community, state - by which we kept the order. The math on that just dont work and I think we're seeing a lot of it coming home to roost.
I'll check out this "Bowling Alone" and if you got stuff of more recency and a minimum of tubthumping, i'll be interested to look at it. I was out of the loop for a long time in order to work on a project, and the ######## Olympics of our last political season keeps me from joining the fray. I'm a card-carrying, pinkass, Eskimo Sexcommie, but i'm so far left i'm right on a lot of things, so let thought fly. You start pimpin, tho, you'll hope i evaporate.
As far as being so far left you're right on things, my friends call me the anti-capitalist capitalist, so I have the same issues about being so far invested on a certain subject that it completes the circle instead of making it points on a line. I'll try and find articles on anti-federalism and social capital and how important they are. I know the two best scholars are Herbert J. Storing for the former and Alexis de Tocqueville for the latter. I'll do a quick search and see if I can't turn up anything.
I don't think I'll start pimping, by the way. I think you've written two things I really agree with and would try and find good source material. I'll be posting in here throughout the week.
Storing's basic theory on anti-federalism can be laid out here, from pages 15-18 (I have the book, but it's still in boxes from the move I made) https://books.google.com/books?id=CqIow0iRuEQC&pg=PA15&source=gbs_toc_r&cad=2#v=onepage&q&f=false
