Although nothing has been announced, it appears that Erik Coleman will be one of the starters at safety for the Lions. This is unofficial, but as far as I'm concerned, it's pretty apparent that Coleman will start. No guarantees though.
Coleman has been starting since camp began and has started all 3 preseason games. Amari Spievey has been inconsistent and I can't see him beating out Coleman anytime soon. Sean Jones has looked decent, but he is playing with the threes. In my opinion, Coleman has played well, with solid run defense and average at best pass defense. Coleman has never been great in coverage so who knows how long he will start (assuming he is named the starter). But he is a very good run defender and has been a top 20 DB 4 times in his career and, if I recall correctly, a DB1 at least once.
If you need a DB, Coleman might be a good option and he is probably on the waiver wire in most leagues. The worst that can happen is you pick up Coleman and he doesn't start or loses the job early...and you lose the player you cut to pick Coleman up....the last player on your bench. The risk is low and there is a potentially high reward.
To repeat, it is not official that Coleman will start, but everything points in that direction. For what it's worth, I picked him up in every IDP league that I am in.
