ervin santana believers HQ (1 Viewer)

i think you can make a fantasy living on a simple principle: sometimes the breakout just comes one year later than everyone expected.

conventional wisdom says avoid santana like the plague.

conventional wisdom says to lust after the new crop of breakout candidates, who's struggles are yet to come.

conventional wisdom says that believing in ervin will lead to heartbreak.

i see a young pitcher that went through a major adjustment period (i.e. got crushed), went down the minors and instead of crumbling, worked on his mechanics, came back up to post a 2.96 september with a nice K/BB ratio.

had ervin not been hyped up before '07 (thus burning many owners), he'd be pointed to as a breakout candidate this year.

but he's not, which means he's probably sittting on your waiver wire.

he had good september, a good winter, scioscia trusted him enough to start him on the road, he performed well on the road. he's still got the consistent mid 90's fastball, is throwing his breaking ball for strikes. (outpitched an '08 breakout candidate on the road, in slowey)

it may be the death of me, but i'm giving this guy another chance.

who's with me...............................

He's been on my bench for a few weeks. I'll make sure and let everyone know when I'm gonna start him so everyone can avoid him...he's sure to blow up when he gets in the lineup.

i'm not worried. i believe what i see. with swervin ervin, i see a guy with a wonderful mid-90's fastball and sharp breaking ball that he is throwing consistently for strikes. i've started him in all his home games and i might be on the verge of pulling the trigger on the road. he might get rocked a few times (he's given up his share of deep, deep fly balls so far this year), but he's a good pitcher. i'm also an idealist and a sucker for 2nd chances.

He'll develop eventually into a C.C. Sabathia-type pitcher, but no more. Lots of good years with 1, maybe 2 Top 10 finishes.

the rubber meets the road tomorrow boys.

ervin visits detroit, where they have been singlehandedly destroying ERAs lately.

if anybody's sending him out there, then you must have one huge pair of cajones (or be crazy or stupid).

:) He is in for me today. The Tigers will not know what to do when they see a pitcher with talent for the first time this week. Crossing my fingers.

I think that Jacoby Ellsbury is the only player in MLB fast enough to put his pants on using a "both legs at the same time" approach, but that is for another thread.

i'm not right very often, so i'm going to bump this up to toot my own horn.

anybody else ready to sign up? (although it was too late a few weeks ago)
