Essential Oils... Do they Work? (1 Viewer)

I think these oils are a lot like religion. If you believe in it and it helps you, good for you. Don't try to convince me it's real and I'll try not to knock your belief.
To be fair, it makes a lot more logical sense for concentrated oils from trees and fruits to have helpful properties than it is to believe in many of the matters of faith in organized religion.

yeah but there are plenty of aspects from different religions that are helpful in our daily lives. If it takes a faith in a higher power to get you to adhere to those, I think that's great.

I am not religious, but went to a Catholic School for 12 years. When it came down to the spiritual core of what I was taught by the Catholic teachers, I don't disagree with anything they taught me. I didn't buy into the Adam/Eve, Jesus stuff, but the love your neighbor, turn the cheeck, help the weak core really did have a positive impact on me. It took awhile to mature and really accept a lot of that, but looking back, it was a very positive environment.

I was brought up Lutheran in a not so religious family. I now consider myself a hopeful agnostic. I would like to believe but I just don't. But yeah, the lessons learned are still rules to live by.

Back to the oil. I don't like the way lavender smells. It's the most overrated oil ever.

I've suffered from migraines for years. Nothing works, so I've been thinking of trying

. Anyone here have any experience with this?

And not to mention the thread is entitled 'Essential Oils.....DO THEY WORK?'
Your response wasn't related to that question your response was 'i don't care what you think what you think is stupid for the following reasons'. If you would like to post some links or can add something of value to the debate feel free.
You mean links like the ones I posted right after the OP started the thread?

And exactly what is your side of the debate? If something "works" because of the placebo effect then it "works"?
My side of the debate is exactly what I posted above...the science isn't complete but it does appear to have positive impacts on mood and relaxation. Which, in theory, could improve sleep for some individuals. It appears that he may be one of those individuals.
Link? Can you back this up other than anecdotal 'evidence'?
Its all in the wiki for aromatherapy...including the links to numerous studies. Feel free to look it up.
:lmao: Come on!

"Aromatherapy tends to be regarded as a complementary modality at best[by whom?] and a pseudoscientific fraud at worst.[17]"

"

There is little evidence to date about the efficacy of aromatherapy.

Martin et al. (1996) concluded that most of the clinical trials suffered from various confounding factors, such as a lack of adequate control, small sample sizes, and lack of repetition by independent researchers. As well, many are served in conjunction with other possible influencers. One example being Kuritama et al.’s (2005) experiment where the psychological benefits of aromatherapy massage was compared to massage alone. Once the tests and questionnaire measures were evaluated there showed a significant reduction in anxiety and self-ranked depression, though there was no difference between the two groups.

Aromatherapists tend to back up their belief in their practice by saying that one cannot confirm or reject their methods by using scientific approaches, because science is reductionist and that aromatherapy depends on a holistic method (Schnaubelt 1998)."

Dude, just stop.
I have no bone to pick in this fight but the science is not that clear...

The science proving that is works is not "clear". Therefore there is no proof that it works.

Don't you remember learning the scientific method back in like 5th grade?
You think that is the way science works? If there is no perfect and clear proof in a study that a process works than clearly the process doesn't work and therefore should be completely discounted and never studied again???

As the links provided above show in peer reviewed journals aromatherapy has been shown to potentially work on some level. No doubt, more science is required but the evidence is far from conclusive in either direction. At a minimum it does appear to have positive effects on some people. There are lots of peer reviewed links at the bottom of that article that shows that.
Next time just save us both a lot of time and post that you're stupid. Thanks in advance.

Did the OP try melatonin drops before essential oils? Because we've tried that #### on JR for the last three days and he's slept like a rock. And I'm pretty sure 3 year olds are immune to the placebo effect.

Also interested in any Essential Otis posts, with the only problem being that the entire thread would be comprised of posts from 4+ years ago.

Tonight the wife came into the living room swishing something in her mouth.

"Are you rinsing?"

She nods yes.

"Why are you doing it so long."

She mumbles something. So I wait for her to spit it out.

"It was sesame oil. Someone at work told me it's a great way to treat sensitive teeth."

"Sesame oil?"

"Yes."

"That isn't an essential oil, is it?"

She looks at me funny. "Um, I don't think so. It was in the pantry. I usually cook with it."

"Ok. But it isn't an essential oil, right?"

"I don't think so."

"Ok. Just checking."

I'm ok with this. Eric Clapton's best stuff is from a long long time ago. He's still Eric Clapton.

We need to make a hokey website with glitter and Native American drums playing, that claims 100% for certain that ancient Mayan women had the most preserved teeth of all ancient peoples because they swished with the semen of their lovers. Add some snappy pseudo-scientific "facts" to back it up, and then send the link to our wives. Frosty will be drier than a dairy cow within the week.

As long as she wasn't gargling essential Otis, you're good.

At least she'd know that essential Otis wasn't mixed with other essentials from a used porcelain throne.
