EUREKA! I Found Some Gold! (1 Viewer)

LOOK AT ME!!!

:excited:

So, I was going through some old boxes out in my garage and stumbled upon an old canvas sack. There were some antique eye glasses and an old pocketwatch inside. I'm not positive, but I think that it was some stuff that my grand father collected. So as I'm rifling through the bag, I come across a small box that was wrapped in an old, dried out rubber band. I open it up and to my surprise discover several gold coins. I found ten 2 1/2 dollar gold coins (I found that odd. $2 1/2 coins?), seven 5 dollar gold coins, and five 10 dollar gold coins. They range in date from the late 1880s to the early 1900s.

Not exactly sure what they are worth, so I'll have to do some research. Thinking about buying a Lear jet or something.

wow! that's a HUGE find. What sort of condition are they in? Be VERY careful handling them. I would probably go out and buy some plastic cases for them today. Post some pics.

I would guess you should able to pull in at least $10K for those. Could be more if they are in good condition or something special about them. There are lots of variables in their exact value.

They are in very good condition. They are already inside of those square cardboard things that have a clear plastic round circle so you can see the coin. I'll post some pics in a few minutes.

Do NOT attempt to clean, polish, or otherwise change the appearance of the coins. Don't even rub them with your fingers. As GM said, get them into cases ASAP.

You can go to the forum here: http://forum.treasurenet.com/

The people there can help you with the value.

They are all fake. I collect fake coins from those days. They are called Leprechaun coins. Good coffee table pieces to have. I'll send you $75 USD tonight if you PM me your address. Thanks.

Yeah, I would imagine that the older ones would be more valuable than their weight in gold due to their age. I know absolutely nothing about coin values.

Older helps, but what really makes a coin valuable is how rare they are and what condition they are in. Of course being gold helps a lot too.

Well, crap. The battery on my digital camera is totally dead.

As soon as it's recharged, I'll take some pics and post in a half hour or so.

Quick, put them in your aquarium and grow coral on them. Then, you can fake that they are from some sunken treasure boat.

Last pic. A side by side comparison of all three.

Gold Coins

Hmmm....when I look at them like that, I have revise the size of the $2 1/2 coin. It's about the size of a nickel.

Woah. Actually a real cool story bro.
 Here are the $5 coins. These are all from the late 1800s. :excited:

$5 Gold Coins

These are roughly the size of a quarter.
Send them all in to Cash4Gold. You can trust those guys!
Ha! No way in hell would I deal with those hucksters. I'm not even sure if I want to sell them at this point. Sure, they're probably worth 7 to 10K, but they were my grandpa's, so.....

I thought you just bit into a

ETA: Serious note , congrats

Awesome find!!

I just googled really quick and what I saw was $10 gold coins around $2300.00 a piece, A PIECE!!

There's 10 G's right there.

Boom!

Just in the melt value of the gold, separate from any value they have to coin collectors, you're looking at about $9178 ($83.44 per 'dollar'). Getting them professionally graded for collector value may add a couple hundred dollars per coin, but I don't know how much that'll end up costing you to get done.

This site has some real good info on real values for the coins. I am not buying the $2300 per $10 coin. There are $10 coins worth that. Like that 1909 coin is probably about $1000 coin, but if it had a "CC" on the back, it would triple in value. Also, your coins are probably conisidered in the very fine category. They look in good shape, but they are not uncirculated which adds quite a bit of value.

Using your link's price scale, the low end of all that I found is 10K plus change. Not too shabby.

So, the coins were not loose? They were already wrapped in the sleeves? In theory they have not been touched for how long then? That is much better than finding them loose.

The coins were not loose. Yes, they were in sleeves. I do not know how long it has been since they have been touched. The price on the sleeve of one of the $10 coins is $200.00.

Good find. I would research a local, reputable numismatic coin dealer in your area and get them appraised.

If you can't find anyone local I recommend contacting American Precious Metals Exchange whom I've purchased from and sold to many times and highly recommend.

If you don't need to sell right now, simply find a safe place for them and allow them to (hopefully) appreciate. If you decide to keep them at home, a quality, fireproof safe is a wise investment.

It's probably best to be discrete about their existence and whereabouts to family and friends.
