EUREKA! I Found Some Gold! (1 Viewer)

I'm not doubting them, but where did you get your prices?
From the dealer who graded them. I told him up front that I was not interested in selling. I just wanted the coins graded, period. He told me the value of each coin after he finished grading them.Do these values seem high to you?
You may have some difficulty unloading them at those levels. Just a quick ebay/google check of a few of these don't support some of the valuations, but that's certainly closer to reality than the lowballs you saw at the onset.

I finally got off of my butt and had my gold coins graded! Here are the results:

$2 1/2 Gold Coin

1909 MS-64 $3000.00 :excited:

1907 MS-63 $1500.00

$10 Indian Head Gold Coin

1910D AU-55 $875.00

I'm absolutely dumbfounded! This collection turned out to be worth twice as much as I estimated due to the excellent condition of these coins.

The grand total comes out to a very respectful $24,300.00! Cha-ching!! :banned:

With the silver included, this collection will total approximately $30.000.00.

:excited: :excited: :excited:
Congrats! What a nice find. Really enjoyed this thread.
:) I'm very excited. Not that I'm going to sell them or anything. Just sayin'.
You're not going to give them to Mario Kart? Haw haw haw haw haw.
 Not a chance.

Probably. I'm guessing the dealer was giving me the price of what he'd sell them for, not what he'd buy them for. It's all good, though. These aren't going anywhere.

Do what you want, but the valuations of metals and artifacts like this could fall fast if interest rates rise again.

I understand that. For me, this isn't about the money. Whatever happens will happen. I'm good with that.

The real question now is do you sell some to get real money for them or hold?

Sell the silver and keep the gold, invest the cash from the silver?

I'm not selling any of it. Like I stated a couple of pages back in this thread, I have an emotional attachment to these coins. If they were worth much, much more, I would think about selling some and pocketing some cash. As it stands, I am debt free except for my mortgage. I'm very financially sound and live within my means. The only thing I really covet right now is a Gibson Les Paul.

That's all good and I don't think anyone would tell you to sell unless your circumstances were different. The question is would having hard cash with your investment power of said cash behind it benefit you financially more than keeping the hard metal? Short term, to me, keeping the hard metal is the way to go but there is a point that the cash would be "better". Just talking investment philosophy here.

Those are all good questions and to tell you the truth, I have absolutely no idea. Gold has come down some in the last few months so I'm not sure what's in store for the future. Will it rise again to so some astronomical amount, or will it fall back down to four or five hundred dollars an ounce? Crap shoot, at best.

Why the huge emotional attachment? This is an awesome story, I had a great time reading all the pages, and your grandpa sounds cool...but...he didn't give the coins to you. It's not like he willed them to you. or entrusted you with their care in the event that he dies. He didn't tell anyone...you just got lucky enough to find them.

If they had been willed to you by him, then I could see the emotional attachment.

Nice haul

If you don't desperately need the money, hold gold.

Way too much economic stress out there right now for much else to be a better investment. Plus you got some cool coins with a history to them instead of some paper or numbers in an account.

My grandfather was more like a father to me. You see, I lived with my grandparents until I was nine years old. He taught me how to ride a bike, how to wipe my butt and how to swim, to name a few things. Unless there's a catastrophic event that forces me to sell, I would like to pass these coins down to my kids and/or grand kids one of these days.

Would you say the sentimental value is on par with bruce willis's character on Pulp Fiction? I'm assuming your grandpa didn't store these in *** as a POW.Still...you have a great story.

Whatever happened here? There has been a pullback in metals and coins in general and I'm thinking about dipping my toes in again.

Do not remember the exact grade, but it was in the high VF range, according to the a coin dealer, that I have grown to trust since I posted this thread years ago. After much reasearch, I wound up sending in several coins to a reputable grader. The jewels of that collection were both graded at MS-65. 1881 CC and 1885 CC Morgans. Retail is roughly $1K per coin.

I disappeared from this board because of this thread. I am now completely confident that not a single person knows about this with the exception of my wife and the FFA, where I'm anonymous.

Still keeping my eye on you, Mario Kart! :)

Well I'm about to take possession of bags and bags of war nickles. Not sure what ill do. I guess dig a hole in the yard as silver prices are low

Exchange them for silver bars or Silver Eagles. That's a lot of nickels and a lot of space being used.

Yeah, I think that's the plan.  Turn them into silver ingots.  I'm not sure what commission I'm looking at but with silver prices down so much it's not as bad as it would have been a few years back on a gross level.

Do this, leave clues on the forum and start a FBG treasure hunt!

That would be an honest to god interesting, non-political thread to follow.
