Tight end emerging
6-foot-8 Guenther's hands, athleticism making impression
By JAMES D. HORNE
The Leaf-Chronicle
The Titans have plenty of confidence in tight end Gregg Guenther.
So much so that on the last play of practice Monday night at Austin Peay's Morgan Brothers soccer field — in a goal line situation where if the offense scored from the 9-yard line, they won, and if the defense stopped the offense, it won — quarterback Vince Young looked for the 6-foot-8, 255-pounder in the end zone.
Unfortunately, the Southern California product, in his second season with the Titans, dropped the pass.
But that really didn't matter, because if the situation was there again, the Titans wouldn't have any problems going to him.
"He's doing the same thing he did last year," tight end Ben Troupe said. "Gregg Guenther is the kind of guy who makes a lot of plays. It may not seem like it, but to us it's commonplace. Greg is a guy we have a lot of confidence in and he goes out and works hard every day."
Said offensive coordinator Norm Chow: "Gregg Guenther is a tremendous athlete, and he showed that last year when he came in at the last second as a free agent. He has the ability to make catches. He knows the offense and understands the offense. So he's a very important part of what we're doing. Tight ends, we expect them to know a lot, because they block and catch and he understands it all and gets it all."
Guenther, who played in five games last year and caught two passes for 13 yards, appreciates the fact the Titans have such faith in him, even when he admits he made the mistake on the pass play.
"Vince has got a lot of confidence in me," Guenther said. "That (play) was actually my fault. He said one thing, and I thought I heard something else. If I would have done what I was supposed to do, it probably would have been a touchdown. Vince and coach Chow show a lot of confidence in me, but I've got to come up big next time."
Guenther also knows he has the perfect opportunity to improve his status with the team, unfortunately, because of the injuries suffered by tight ends Erron Kinney and Bo Scaife.
"It just gives me more of a chance to showcase my skills and show what I can do," Guenther said. "With Erron and Bo down, it's just me, Ben and J.P. (Petrowski). We have no choice. We're going to get a majority of the reps. There's enough work for all of us, and we can all use it to get ready for the season."
Said Chow: "That (injuries) are the nature of the business. They're all good friends and they're all competitive, like one another and respect one another. So it's a good situation to have."
And all Guenther wants to do is become the perfect target.
"Exactly, that's what I'm trying to showcase right now," said Guenther, who then proceeded to go and catch passes from the JUGS machine after practice was over.
