Evil Commissioner Tricks (1 Viewer)

murrrrr

Footballguy
Running a Yahoo league, 2nd year in, with some buddies from work. Some are newbs, but 3 or 4 of us know our stuff.

12 team PPR league, 1QB, 2RB, 2 WR, 1TE, 1K, 1 DEF. This year, in our voting process, all TDs got bumped to 6 points.

Now we all know how good the projections from the Footballguys are....

but the Yahoo rankings were...uh...different.

I therefore made it my "duty" to hand out the obligatory "How scoring changes affect YOU" sheets today.

The top 5 players listed by points were close to standard: Larry Johnson, Peyton Manning, Shawn Alexander, Steve Smith, LaDanian Tomlinson... but then they got weird.

Jake Plummer

Carson Palmer

Matt Hasselbeck

Daunte Culpepper

Mark Brunell :lmao:

...and so on

The same scoring system in our beloved DD has all RB's in the top 10.

So I ask:

1. Was I wrong as Commissioner to provide everyone with the Yahoo rankings?

and

2. What's the most evil strategy you've employed to get ahead in your draft?

Murrrrr! :excited:

BRILLIANT!! I dont think it is evil at all. Pure strategy here. All is fair when trying to one up the guys at work.

i'd say you were wrong to do it if they dont know better than to blindly follow rankings. worst thing ive done to get ahead in my draft is just convincing someone to draft a different player but still talent=to the round. i just point out the negatives for that player, like for lj this year id mention he lost fb richardson, roaf, al saunders. thats not too bad i dont think, especially cause most of the time people will take that player anyway.

Thats low.

Why would you want these rookie to struggle and then potentially quit. I enjoy competitive leagues, and by pulling this stunt, you tried to make the league less competitive by handicapping your newbie opponents. You should be helping newbie owners, especially as the commish.

:goodposting: There's a fine line between "all's fair in love and war and FF" and attempting to use your power as Commissioner against leaguemates. Winning that way doesn't appeal to me. (I Commish one league, too.)You told us yourself that there are many newbies. Are you that insecure in your FF ability that you cannot handle a league with only 2 or 3 other sharks?ETA: I see what you're doing now. Seahawk and Steeler fans united!

I think it's ok if you tell them yahoo's rankings are not yours.

What image are you trying to project at work anyway?

Be helpful. Direct the newbies or past struggling owners to this site.

If you got game as they say, it won't matter. Some won't do the leg work.

Others won't even read the email. At worst you get a competitive league. Trades might come easier too.

I saw this saying somewhere: People won't remember what you do or say, only how you make them feel. Be honest.

I'm giving one struggling player in my league my rankings. I trust him not to share them and I'm still going to stomp him.

As far as evil tricks, there are plenty. Just start this thread "What has a commish done to make you quit or not come back to a league?"

In all fairness, I don't say "These are the ULTIMATE rankings, use these or die".

I actually have been letting the new guys know how the league went last year, and even went so far as to give them the draft order and picks from the previous year.

I also steer them to some sites if they CHOOSE to do research (here included).

They still have free will, but now a little more indecision to go along with it. :D

You'll probably be that tool that comes back here in December bragging because you won your league like your the greatest fantasy player ever.

Do you look for new team owners every year? When I first started playing FF if I was in a league like this, I'd probably stop 3 or 4 games in. Sounds like a real good way to make them lose interest real quick.

I've commissioned many leagues with multiple (up to 9) rookie owners, and I have always given them the same advice:

1. Do NOT go into the draft blind, or you'll get crushed.

2. Get a guide book, and use the cheatsheets, but keep in mind the sheets were printed very early in the off-season, so you need to double check all the rankings and do some of your own research, or you'll be handicapping yourself.

3. Plenty of free cheatsheets are out there, including on yahoo and aol, but keep in mind what scoring system they use. Also keep in mind that the free ones are generally not the best ones.

4. Qb's may score more, but they also generally score closer together.

5. Don't be so in love with your favorite team that you draft a ton of players from them...you'll regret it.

6. If you need any help, ask me..I'll point out some good places to get info.

That's the gist of my rookie letter (shortened and simplified).

Then, at the draft, I take copies of a generic cheatsheet that is at least current. I don't give out MY cheatsheet (adjustments for our league scoring and my own tweaks for projections), more of a consensus cheatsheet.

IN my experience, most rookies think they know football well enough that they still won't study, and you'll still own them, but at least they'll think good about you, and they'll remember the good advice you gave them. In the end, they will become fans, and return in years to come. The way you are going about things, they are more likely to get frustrated, and far less likely to return.

I had 9 rookies last year...all but 2 people returned for this years league, and every one is vey excited about "doing better" now that they have a clue. (Half a clue anyway)

BOTTOM LINE: You methods are despicable...you aren't worthy of being a commissioner. :hot: :hot:

Edited for spelling

So, in summary, you feel so inadequate as a FFer, that you have to resort to these tactics to beat newbs. Go get 'em tiger.
