Ausar Walcott charged with attempted murder in N.J.

On the same day that tight end Aaron Hernandez was arrested by authorities and released by the New England Patriots, the Cleveland Browns were dealing with their own serious legal matter.

Rookie defensive end/linebacker Ausar Walcott was charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault and third-degree endangering an injured victim, the Passaic County Sheriff's Office, in Paterson, N.J., confirmed Wednesday to NFL.com.

Just like the Patriots, the Browns swiftly acted in response to the news. The team released Walcott Wednesday afternoon. An undrafted player from Virginia, Walcott was signed on May 13.

A source close to the situation told the NFL Network's Michelle Beisner that the decision was made without hesitation because the Browns "will not tolerate that kind of behavior."

With his NFL career on hold, Walcott will be dealing with serious charges. According to a spokesman, Walcott was remanded to the Passaic County Jail at 9:20 p.m. on Tuesday. His bail was set at $500,000, and he was being held pending a bail source hearing, ordered by Judge Raymond Reddin. The hearing would require Walcott -- if he posted bail -- to disclose from where he got the money.

The incident allegedly happened around 3 a.m. on Sunday outside The Palace Gentlemenâs Club, Passaic police Detective Andrew White told the Bergen Record. White also told The Record that the charges stem from the accusation that Walcott punched a man in the head.

First degree attempted murder for punching someone in the face?

This is why you can't take matters into your own hands. I mentioned it in the FFA thread. Even though you want to be a tough guy. A couple punches to a thin-skulled person and they end up in critical condition.

I detect a lot of contempt for those not blessed with a thick skull.

This made me laugh:

Perhaps another reason the decision was made without hesitation was because he was an undrafted free agent signee, and not a pro-bowl caliber player? Perhaps the reason the decision was made without hesitation was because there will be no financial implications of waiving him?

You think if this was Trent Richardson, they would have made the same move, just as quickly?

Rotoworld:

Ex-Browns OLB/DE Ausar Walcott pleaded not guilty to first-degree attempted murder and other charges on Thursday.
Walcott was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder, second-degree aggravated assault, and third-degree endangering an injured victim after punching a man in the face outside a strip club. The victim, Derek Jones, is in a medically-induced coma at a New York hospital. Walcott is being held on $500,000 bail, and he was released by the Browns on Wednesday. The undrafted rookie will never step foot on an NFL field.

thats y I said he must not be worth the extra headache. T-Rich would be; talent get fined, scrubs get cut... we all know that

Jeez, does this kid hit like Clubber Lang or something.

Walcott cleared waivers today as well. Patriots should have claimed him, they have the open roster spot.

Just sayin'

Rotoworld:

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell says he would have to approve any potential signing of free agent OLB/DE Ausar Walcott.
Walcott was charged with attempted murder last week. As is the case with Aaron Hernandez, Goodell says a signing could not take place before he "conducts a hearing and determines any appropriate discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy." Walcott was a fringe UDFA even before his arrest, so it's a moot point.
