Ex-NFL WR Vincent Jackson diagnosed with Stage 2 CTE following death at age 38 (1 Viewer)

Pretty sure most people who have played football, boxed, some hockey for 15 years plus have some form of CTE.

Looking back I know I had 2-3 concussions and just practiced and or played the next day. These guys probably had god only knows how many.
In an interview on GMA, the neuropathogist who did studied Jackson's brain said that head trauma without concussions is also possibly linked to CTE. I imagine Jackson was hit in the head lots of times during games.

I had at least 4 concussions over a 5 year period playing sports. On 2 occasions they gave me smelling salts and told me to go sit in the bench, the other 2 I walked off and sat the rest of the game. One time I hit a brick wall diving for a loose ball ( no padding) - hey, no blood, no ER. Never saw medical personnel for any of them.

How the heck did Staubach have 20?

Vincent Jackson's official cause of death was "chronic alcohol use,'' according to the Hillsborough County Medical Examiner's report released today.

The final findings included that Jackson had alcoholic cardiomyopathy, a condition caused by long-term alcohol use that weakens the heart muscle. Jackson was found dead in a Homewood Suites hotel room in Tampa in Feb. He was 38.

Be good to your bodies, fellas. If you need help, seek help.

Tragic story all around. Who knows if the CTE caused the alcohol problems, or what.

I'm pretty sure that a bunch of even former college/high school athletes like us Regular Joes have some form of CTE and don't even know it.

Careful with your heads, boys. That's a thin shell around so much important and tender matter.

I'm not being flippant with any of those sentences. RIP, Vincent Jackson.

That’s terrible news.  CTE and alcoholism often go hand in hand.   38 year old elite athletes should not be dying.  Tragic

Funny how we long-time FF players conceptualize things....especially players. Much like a song, a players name can also elicit fond (or terrible) memories from games long gone by.

Enter Mr. Vincent Jackson for me. The year was 2010, week 15, and I was in the playoffs in a super-competitive league, facing the league juggernaut. It is always nerve-wracking to start players on Thursday night anyway, but even more so in the playoffs (kinda like AJ Brown this year).....and Jackson was just coming back from a season-long injury (don't remember the injury), and was facing a stout SF pass defense. I decided to roll the dice on him, and he came up aces for me....7/112/3! It was the most enjoyable and easy-going Thurs-Sun playoff wait for me in my career.

So, thank you Mr. Jackson. RIP. I will never forget your effort that night.

I really love football but at some point we probably should re-examine this. Ditto with boxing. Tragic to hear about Jackson and Demaryius.
