Extreme Auction Strategies (1 Viewer)

I feel like I have a good knack for finding solid pitchers on the cheap, and therefore I'm considering building a team of stud hitters, and cheap, upside SP and RP.

Has anyone ever done this? Should I nominate my SP targets (e.g. Javier Vazquez) early to get them in place and work backwards?

It's called the LIMA plan. Ron Shandler / Baseball HQ have featured this notion for quite some time. The Baseball Forecaster even gives players a rating for this plan.

It's pretty tough to pull off, particularly in the era of so many advanced stats being available to the average fantasy player, but knock yourself out. Fantasy baseball is supposed to be about having a plan and having fun.

ETA: I'm not sure I'd tip my hand by nominating those guys early on when other owners have plenty of cash to spend. That being said, I'm no auction expert by any means.

The biggest issue I have found is with the relief pitching aspect. Finding cheap solid starters is not difficult (and I think Vasquez will have a huge rebound in Florida), but when you allocate 10% to pitching, it is difficult to get closers. And you don't want to punt a category in a roto format.I am going to try 80/20 this year.

A couple things working in my favor:There are now two teams (out of 14) which have been routinely punting saves now, so it should be rather easy to get a couple closers at a good price. It's an H2H league.Oof, didn't realize JV had such a decrease in fastball velocity. Down from 91 to 88, and his Swinging strike% down from 12% to a league average 8.5%. Still looking for guys, obviously.

I have for years suggested a 200+/60- split but going to 234/26 is emminently doable IF1) your league is any tick towards shallow2) your leaguemates totally ignore the better MR/setup pitchers with good strikeout rates3) you DON'T chase a closer past $10/11 just to have one - having two or three that could easily inherit the role and working the FA list hard for saves will get you enough points4) you Truly dominate the hitting categories - and that is not as easy as just putting that many dollars there, you still have to hit on some of your cheapies there (anecdotally I used the absolute extreme....long story....one year and went 250/10 and still couldn't get every single hitting point 63/65 was enough to get me 2nd place in a big money league)Do NOT nominate anyone you really want early....just too much danger that someone bids just to open their mouth when you don't want bids on the guyBTW RnR - this is far more extreme than Shandler's LIMA >I orignally called it MIMA

It could absolutely be an age issue with Vasquez. But it can also be an injury. I am taking the chance that it was a hidden injury that he played through, and will be targeting him in all my leagues. In my opinion, the 90/10 strategy can really work in head to head. Especially in a 14 teamer. One thing I always do when searching for bargain pitchers, is finding pitchers that have moved to pitchers parks, even better if they move from American to National league. A couple players I think will far outproduce their cost:Aaron Harang, San DiegoJavier Vasquez, MarlinsChris Capuano, Mets

I went this route in AL Tout Wars last year. It looked great on paper until all of my offense started getting hurt and I had to deal away pitching to help the offense.

Here were my draft strategies in the 2 expert leagues I play. I won the FP911 one running away by 16 points; finished in the lower half in Tout.

Would you agree that this strategy makes more sense for H2H ( :goodposting: ) than Roto?Should we start a separate "endgame/$1 pitchers 2011" thread?

:sadbanana: I got crushed last year in a league using 90-10. And I won saves from waiver guys even. I just had a very hard time getting the strikeouts needed in a ten pitcher league. Wins hurt bad too. And of course Prince and my bat's had an off year. Those mr pitcher guys are key to making this work. I will try 80-20 this year in that league.
