Family ski trip -- Looking for recommendations (1 Viewer)

Thanks for this.  Unfortunately Park City is a bit too far to drive.

Right now, leaning Keystone, Breckenridge, or Copper Mountain but need to sit down now and look into these closer.  So far some excellent advice in here and it's been really helpful.
So money isn't really a concern then? Thought I read that you needed to do it on a budget.

No, I never said I needed to do it on a budget.  I just didn't want to overpay for a nicer resort with better ski conditions that I don't need because we are all beginners and can't tell the difference anyway.  Similarly, because we are open to various times to go, I'd rather go during a non-peak period.  And finally, as we are just going to drive, I don't have to worry about airfare for 5 people.

In other words, where we can save on things that aren't as important, I'd like to do so.  But I don't mind spending on things that are worth it and don't have a fixed budget for the trip.  In the end, we'd like to have a nice family ski vacation and I'm completely fine with paying for things that matter.

Keystone or Breck are better options for what you want.  Breck is a cool town.

For non-peak, you need to go during the week and not over Spring Break or Presidents Day weekend.  Then Colorado resorts get swamped with people coming up from Denver.

Yeah avoid weekends. Breck is a great town. The mark against it is it is consistenrly windier and colder than the other summit/Vail resorts. It's probably getting warmer and I'm guessing you won't be spending much time up top so shouldn't be a problem. Given that, I'd suggest breck. Fwiw, Telluride is my favorite mountain/town in CO.

MLK is Jan 18th, 2018.  Is that another day to avoid?  Is late January/early February ok from a weather standpoint to enjoy (since I'll try to avoid March with spring break)?  And how many days should I be looking at?  Open to staying up to 7 days but if that's going to be too long, especially with younger kids, what's ideal?  4 days?  Want to be there long enough to enjoy but not too long where we are all exhausted and can't wait to get back home.  Maybe arrive on a Sunday and check out on a Friday (i.e. 1/17 - 1/22)?

ETA -- Also open to doing maybe 3 days at Breck and 3 days at Keystone since they are close to each other if that might be worthwhile.

February or early March.  The weather has a chance of being a bit warmer the later you go, which is important for kids and women, and this year they hardly had snow in January anyway.

No more than 4 days of skiing.  Very tiring until you get good at it.  If possible Monday - Thursday.  But if you are there that many days over a weekend is fine too.  Stay in Breck and don't change rooms the whole trip.  Moving rooms is a pain.  You can drive over or Uber Ski over to Keystone if you need another place.  Shuttles run between the resorts too.  Also look into VRBO condos near the slopes.  I've done those several times.  That way you get a kitchen and can save a ton of money making breakfast in your room.

Look into AirBNB or VRBO in Dillon, CO.  Beautiful small town on a big reservoir that is centrally located to all three of those areas, Arapaho Basin, and I-70.  Only drawback to these resorts is altitude - Dillon is at about 10000 feet, so drink LOTS of water and don't overdo it the first few days.

Steamboat is another place to look into.  Less weekend crowds, great snow, and a really fun town.

Great point here.  Ask you doc for prescription altitude medicine.  You can get over the counter which works OK.  The prescription stuff is better though.  It's just precautionary.  But the one time I was in Telluride, altitude sickness knocked me out for 2 full days.
