Favorite NFL teams of sports media personalities (1 Viewer)

Mike Herman

Footballguy
I'm working on getting started on compiling a list of the favorite NFL teams of all the various sports media people (commentators, reporters, writers, etc.). Mediums would include television, syndicated and satellite radio, magazines, news services, internet, etc... i.e. ones that have broad or national coverage rather than just a single market. Also am trying to keep it to people that have acknowledged that favorite team, rather than ones that just seam apparent based on their reporting.

I don't get a chance to watch, listen to, or read absolutely everyone that is out there, but I figure the composite Shark Pool does. So whatchya got?

A couple that popped into my head during lunch...

Peter King (SI) - New England

Mel Kiper (ESPN) - Baltimore

Chick Magee (Bob & Tom) - Washington

and for obvious reasons...

Merril Hoge (ESPN) - Pittsburgh

Troy Aikman (Fox) - Dallas

I lived in Charlotte when the expansion franchise was awarded to Carolina, and I've been to many games in their lovely stadium, and many live radio broadcast shows from Coaches' in Charlotte when Sam Mills was still with us, so I tend to pull for the Panthers in the NFC.

My daughter loves Peyton Manning (we say "Peyton Manning" in photo ops instead of "cheese" to get her to smile - that's how much) so the Colts are the fav. AFC squad in the Wimer household. Tony Dungy is one of the coaches I most respect among the NFL ranks (yes, I know he retired).

I know he's a Red Sox fan in baseball, but I though he was a Bills fan - maybe I'm wrong.Mike Greenberg of ESPN (Sports Center and morning radio) is an acknowledged Jets' fan.

I think a major affiliation subcategory may make sense here. It's always struck me how many media types have connections with the Bengals.Btw, Dan Patrick = Bengals fan.Boomer Esiason's a tricky case as I think he's mostly id'd with his Bengals years and pulls for them but did grow up a Jets fan on long island.I always thought King was a Giants fan. At least he writes like one.Mike Francessa is a Giants fan by upbringing.Adam "The Bull" Gerstenhaber (WFAN talkie) is another Who Dey fan.-QG

Chris Berman?

He has a special place in his heart for the Bucs...but I doubt he's be categorized as a true fan.

I just send a message to his MMQB mailbag, asking him for the real answer to the question. We'll see if he responds.P.S. I added the master list in the first post and will keep it updated.

Mike Tirico lives in Ann Arbor, and judging from local radio interviews, it sounds like he is a converted Lions fan (poor guy... hopefully he has a second team too).

Does anyone know the favored team for any of the following?Mike GolicFrank DefordDr. Z.Dennis MillerJohn Feinstein
Golic played for Philly, and he seems to have maintained a sort of allegiance to the Eagles, though I don't know how he'd answer if directly asked this question. I don't know about Miller. The others I suspect would answer "none" as they consider themselves professional journalists. Feinstein has covered the Redskins for the Washington Post and may be from that area IIRC.

I was always under the impression Dr. Z at least liked the Bills as he used to always pick them to go to the Super Bowl.I believe Miller is a Steelers fan.

King is from Springfield Mass. I'm 99% certain he's a Pats "fan"

Mike Sando of ESPN spent most of his pro career covering Washington teams and either 7 or 9 covering the Seahawks. His innovative blog was fantastic for news and analysis, which is sadly what drew him away from the Seahawks Insider. He still covers the NFCW and I would feel pretty confident saying he's a Seahawks fan.

John Clayton came from the same newspaper as well and I believe he'd be counted as a Seahawks fan.

Bill Simmons - Patriots (obviously)

Adam Carolla - Rams (I realize he's not "sports media")

Tony Bruno - Eagles

Gregg Easterbrook - Redskins (I think)

I think Deford was an old Colts guy, having grown up in Baltimore. But I don't know if that remained true after the move. It would be unlikely that he became a Ravens fan.

I just did a quick search, and it looks like well over half his football articles are about Johnny U, so I think you're correct. I added him to the list using the Baltimore Colts. Besides we already had an LA Rams on the list. No need to eliminate relocated or defunct clubs if they are the answer to the question.

Looking at the list so far, I realize that Sporting News is represented yet, which in turn makes me realize I don't even know who writes for them these days. Can anyone help fill that in?

P.S. thanks for all the good input so far.

Mark Madden is a Steelers fan (See the NFL Network Top 10 shows)
He actually uses Pittsburgh to forward his own agenda. He is pure sleeze and anything but a "fan" of the Steelers. He is a "user".
:goodposting:
Are you saying that the Steelers are not Mark's favorite team, or that they are his favorite team but he uses that favoritism in a bad way? In other words, do I need to delete him from the list, or leave him there and it will be understood that some Steelers' fans will wish he wasn't?

if a few teams that are in the range that the Jets want to move to and they want to trade down then I don't see it as a tactical error to announce that they are interested in dealing to move up. It worked out pretty well as far as not paying too much to go from 17 to 5. Of course nobody can say how good or bad the selection was until we see if Sanchez can live up to the hype
Berman is definitely a Bills fan. I feel like I've heard him admit so during a draft telecast at some point in the last 15 years.

The first, but like choke said he uses the Steelers to say controversial things on-air to piss people off (ratings)http://www.timesonline.com/articles/2008/0...e0119260375.txt
