A big different here is that Metallica went for a more commercial sound with the Black album, wanting to draw in the MTV crowd.  I don't think Nirvana made such a sweeping change in creative direction to appeal to the masses like that.

Nirvana went the other direction with In Utero.  They tried to make it as un-radio friendly as possible.  Geffen almost didn’t release it
