Cincinnati Bengals

Positions of Need (as per NFL.com)

S, TE, Specialist, DL

Needs Analysis: Signing WR Antonio Bryant helped fill the void left by the departure of T.J. Houshmandzadeh last offseason and the death of Chris Henry. The Bengals need to upgrade at safety and a player like USC's Taylor Mays would be a good fit. I can't even imagine how teams would matchup with the offense if the Bengals had a vertical threat tight end, and it appears Chase Coffman is not going to fill those shoes. Veteran kicker Shayne Graham might not return, so the position could be looked at late in the draft. The defense played well last season, but could use some solid young players on the line in order to take that next step and become a great unit.

The Bengals aren't going to draft a TE in the first round. Gresham has too many questions surrounding his health and blocking for a team that doesn't normally utilize the position extensively. My guess is they take Anthony McCoy in the second or third.

The 2 biggest positions of need are O-line and secondary. With Iupati and Thomas off the board, I could see them going for Pouncey or Mays. I voted Mays since Pouncey's natural position is center, which is adequately filled right now by Cook with Luigs waiting in the wings (although Pouncey can play guard too, so they may be attracted to his versatility)

2010 NFL Draft previews: Cincinnati Bengals

The Cincinnati Bengals feel as though they're close to being a legitimate Super Bowl contender. I feel as though they're still a few players away from really challenging past the first round of the play-offs.

Surprisingly, the Bengals defense was the side of the ball to watch in 2009. Cincinnati gave up just over 18 points a game, good enough for sixth best in the NFL. In recent years it's been the Bengal offense that's done most of the heavy lifting for this team; that was not the case a year ago. The offense was only able to manage 19.1 points per contest (22nd in the league), barely averaging more points than they concede. It's clear that All-Pro offensive performers Carson Palmer and Chad Ochocinco need more help to make Cincy a legitimate contender in the AFC.

The Bengals have found a solid ground attack in the form of Cedric Benson, rushing for over 1200 yards in '09. It's through the air that the Bengals have been inconsistent. Cincy has taken some bold steps this off-season, signing receivers Antonio Bryant (uber-talented, but tends to pout and not give maximum effort at times) and Matt Jones (who has had off the field problems involving cocaine) to try to improve the receiving position. Ochocinco is a legit number one receiver, but there wasn't much production from the other members of that receiving corp in 2009. If Bryant and Jones can keep their personal problems at bay, they have the ability to really help the Bengals offense in 2010.

While the Bengals' offense has not featured a pass catching tight-end during the Marvin Lewis era, another offensive weapon to surround Palmer with may be what pushes this team to the next round of the play-offs. If Jermaine Gresham is available when the Bengals go on the clock with the 21st pick, I believe they will select him. Cincinnati has a young and talented offensive line, a franchise quarterback still in the prime of his career, and a running back coming off one of the best rushing seasons in team history. If the Bengals could nab Gresham at number 21, and if both Bryant and Jones work out at receiver, Cincy could once again have a dangerous offensive team.

Gresham is 6'6, 260 pounds and is known as an extremely talented pass catching tight-end. He has the size and physical skills to automatically step into an NFL team and make them a much more explosive team. Gresham can expose the middle of a defense, and has the ability and strength to win jump balls. He will be a great threat on the goal line. One knock on Gresham is that he needs to improve his run blocking. I don't have many concerns about that however, he's strong enough to block a 9 technique defensive end, he just needs to work on some of the fundamentals with NFL coaching. Overall, Gresham is a great prospect, and I think the Bengals will chose him if he's available to them.

I agree but I see them going for the safe pick in Pouncey over Mays.

Anybody know the contract status of the Bengals' CBs? Wilson is the BPA but certainly not an immediate need. If he may be needed for next year then I could see him being the pick. Pouncey is a guy that is said to be an immediate starter at guard and would probably be my next favorite pick. I don't like Mays in the 1st round, and I think it's early still for Gresham. I also like Kindle as a SOLB.

Mays.

Surprised to see all these DEs falling though. Kindle would be a great pick. I'd be happy with Pouncey or Gresham too. Hope things end up looking like this for them.
