FBG Mock Draft Contest (1 Viewer)

Chaos Commish

Footballguy
I'll score this if the guys at DraftGuys don't want to do it for me/us. ;)

Construx will offer up cash and prizes to the winner. Otherwise this is for bragging rights.

There aren't that many mockers around here anyway, so it shouldn't be any worse than the contest I did last year.

I found this scoring system a year ago in a thread similar to the one here complaining about the validity of oversimplified results. I have never tried this system.

Mock Draft Contest Scoring SystemNegative PointsIF anyone in your top 10 misses the first round you get negative 25 pointsIf anyone in your top 10 misses the first 20 picks you get negative 10 points.IF anyone in your 11-20 misses the first round you get negative 7 pointsIF anyone in your 21-32 misses the first round you get negative 2 points.. It seemed to me like someone put some serious thought into producing a true winner so there it is. If someone wants to crunch numbers to seek a major flaw, I am listening. At a glance it looks like there may be too much weight on some of the bonuses. The poster who ran this contest last year claimed it never produced a controversy and the winner in this system is always crystal clear. :bowtie:

Anyway, post a mock at FBGs and you are entered whether you like it or not. I'd prefer your entry here, but will gladly attach the Andy, Colin, Blooms, and others to the contest. I understand the desire to have a mock in a thread of it's own. Be sure to update it in a new post, rather than editing, should you make last minute changes. I can't imagine scoring system changes changing your projections so this system is open for discussion especially should a convincing flaw be revealed. That discussion is closed Saturday, April 21st at midnight PDT.

I know many who try their hand at mocking will be making changes right up to the night of the draft (when the juicy information is flowing). I can see a situation where a trade is announced minutes before the draft and people try to quickly post a current version. The draft begins Saturday, April 28th, at high noon EST. The deadline for submission to this contest is Saturday, April 28th, 11:45 AM, EST. Anyway, this might make the draft more fun for some of us. I might even enter. I'm not around as much as I was a year ago, so perhaps give this an occasional bump when new mocks are posted elsewhere (by pasting the new version).

I have no idea what scoring this beast will involve, but Andy has countless idle hours at work to program the spreadsheet for us.

Post a mock.

eta: I already modified the scoring some. It makes more sense to me, but no sense trying to explain it. It's better though.

sweeeeet. Hopefully by this time next year we'll have written a piece of software that will collect and automatically score these.

Looking at the scoring, I get the feeling it needs to reward "runs of correct picks," since the goal is to find the most accurate mock. I was more impressed with Gosselin's 25 than Rang's 28 last year. What if I added a bonus for a run of three correct, bigger for 4, then 5, 6, 7, etc.? Those points are being rewarded for someone who is nailing the order. Make sense? Am I over complicating something already accounted for? :( I guess I am interested in a scoring system that would properly account for the best overall mock and my brain isn't strong enough to know what that means.

Scoring is getting complicated. If you decide to do that then awesome!

I'm fine with any type of scoring. It may be easier to do 2 pts per correct player to correct team and 1 pt per correct slot taken.

I'll call round one of Atomic Punk's excellent mock with trades entry number 1.

I deleted his comments to keep this easier for scoring purposes. So, should you decide to submit an entry, comments are not necessary.

If I have 50+ entries, I'll hate scoring it, but I doubt we get over 20. This will just take a couple hours to crunch while day 2 progresses. If way more than 20 submit, so be it. The time many waste with video games I can waste with scoring this thing. The reason for going little more complex is to try to award the best mock without controversy. I had Winston Justice in the top 10 last year, but otherwise my mock was decent. This system would catch just how far off I was on that one. There's a lot of similar catches built in. I think it's worth a shot anyway. I want to score it, THEN peruse the mocks to see if I agree with how they ranked per this system.

Banking on beginners luck. :wall:

1) Oakland Raiders- J. Russell

In my opinion this is a no brainer unless the Raiders trade Randy Moss before draft day and then the pick will go Calvin John but as things look right now I think Russell is the guy.

2) ATL Falcons- Calvin Johnson (Atl trades #2 in 2007 and 2008 along with #8 overall)

ATL loves being able to get this home grown kid. Petrino is gonna give Vick the weapons to see how good he can really be. ATL gets the best prospect in this draft thanks to the trade for Schaub. If Johnson could make Reggie Ball look good in college he is going to make Vick look great.

3) Cle Browns- Joe Thomas

All I hear is Brady Quinn and Peterson here, sorry I'm not buying it. Cleveland has been looking to get a great LT since they got back in the league and here is their chance. I think they would be foolish to turn it down. Romeo has to win now and Brady isn't going to help that. I'm not saying that Frye is the answer but this team has some good parts and with the line secure I think they can make a run to the playoffs this year. I really liked what I saw out of the Browns last year and with this addition I think they are on the right track.

4) TB Bucs- J. Anderson

This pick is really hard and I think it is between Anderson or Adams but I think TB looks in Anderson's direction. I really think TB will try to trade out of this pick whether it be up or down. I just think ATL has more amo to move up to get Calvin and there isn't a player except Peterson to move up and get for other teams. Again I don't like the pick but this is where I'll guess.

5) Arizona Cardinals- Levi Brown

Talk about a reach but if Thomas isn't there I can't see Ariz. going anywhere except for the O-Line and I can't see them trading down fearing that Det., Miami or Houston would be all over him. I did like Levi this year when I saw him. He is very good in the running game which is where they need him. I really like Arizona to make a move in the west this year and that is coming from a Rams fan.

6) Washington Redskins- Amobi Okoye

The Skins' need help against the run and this young stud can help them for the next decade. A 19 year old phenom that will help open things up for the skins' big hitters.

7) Minn Vikings- Brady Quinn

If the Viked want to stay with Tavarus Jackson I say good luck. I think Brady could run Childress's system to perfection. Short passes and mobile that is an offense that was made for him plus he is very marketable which is good for Ziggy.

8) Det Lions (From ATL) Gaines Adams

Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Would the Lions look like genius's if this happend. I think they are prepared right now to take him @ #2. If they could move down 6 spots and save all that $$$$$$ plus pick up (2) #2's in the process I think Millen might actually earn his paycheck. Somehow I think if this were avilable I think that Millen would screw it up. How this man still has a job I don't get.

9) NYG (from Miami for a 2nd and fourth) A. Peterson

At the room erupts in New York. I really think if available the Giants make a move for a rb. It might be in the 2nd instead of the first but if they have a chance to get Peterson they'll jump all over it.

10) Houston Texans- Laron Landry

Slowly the Texans are building a nice young defense. This kid is the player they need in their secondary. You put him with Duanta and Ryans and Williams and you have a future...atleast on that side of the ball.

11) S.F. 49er's- Adam Carriker

A tough DE that will fit perfect in Nolan's defense.

12) SD (compensation for M. Turner from Buffalo) Reggie Nelson

I think Turner is gone to Buffalo and SD picks up a great young player to upgrade their secondary alittle.

13) STL Rams- Patrick Willis

With Witherspoon, Draft and Willis the Rams would have one of the better LB'ing corps in NFL.....okay homer alittle. Maybe not one of the best but a huge upgrade to what we have had for the last couple years.

14) Carolina Panthers- G. Olsen

They need a safety valve for Delhomme (or Carr) when he is getting pressure. The defense is set with skill and power they need another playmaker on offense and Olsen would add a big upgrade at the TE position.

15) Pitt Steelers- Alan Branch

Branch takes up alot of space and is known as a underachiever but has top ten talent. The Steelers can make talent ooze out of anyone.

16) GB Packers- M. Lynch

As long as Packers don't pick anyone up before the draft this is a slam dunk. Lynch will bring power and his slashing ability tot he Packers offense. This year's rookie of the year.

17) Jax Jags- L. Timmons

Just helps that defense get better. Extreme talent goes to an already stacked D.

18) Cinncy Bengles- L. Hall

This pick is just stuck in my head. The talks of D. O'Neal getting trading make this pick a given as long as he is still oon the board. If Buffalo would have still had their pick he probably would have gone there.

19) Tenn Titans- D. Jarrett

Vince Young let me introduce you to Mr. Jarrett. You 2 are going to be good friends for a long time. Norm Chow missed on his guy last year but this year he might get lucky with his stud from back in the days.

20) Miami (from NYG) T. Ginn Jr.

Some interesting pieces get answered here with this pick. Ginn is a superb talent with extreme speed. He can start as the return guy right away since Welker is gone and also fill the void in the passing game the Dolphins lost with the losses of Welker and McMichael.

21) Denver Broncos- J. Moss

They have lost T. Pryce and C. Brown in the last 2 years. Got to get some new blood on that DL. Moss made himself some $$$$$$ last January in the championship game. He has alot of talent that Denver could definetly use.

22) Dallas Cowboys- D. Revis

The boys need some help on defense and especially in the secondary. Revis might be a reach but has had some great showings and his stock had been on the rise lately.

23) KC Chiefs- D. Bowe

One of these year the Chiefs will actually draft a wr. I'm not a big fan of Bowe and I think he is very overrated but I do think he will go in the first round and the Chiefs look like a great destination.

24) NE Patroits- A. Ross

Protection if the lose Samuels. I've liked Ross for awhile (big Texas fan) and he has finally starting rising in most mocks. I think NE is getting a nice player that will fit in nicely with their team concept.

25) NY Jets- Anthony Spencer

Nice player that fits nicely on that line.

26) Philly Eagles- Justin Blalock

It just always seems that the Eagles are building their line and this big haus could give them alot of versitility. You could put him on the other side of Andrews and "Big John" and have as solis of a line as anyone in the NFL.

27) NO Saints- Robert Meachem

Nice wr going to a great offense. I think Meachem would be the #2 wr picked in rookie dynasty leagues if he ended up there.

28) NE Pats- Brian Leonard

1) Protection for Maroney

2) Can play fullback

3) Can catch the ball good

4) Very intellegent

5) Just seems like a Patroit

29) Balt Ravens- Brandon Meriweather

Him and Ed Reed would just be sick in the secondary.

30) Buff (from SD)- Brandon Siler

Buffalo tries to replace Fletcher. I really don't like where this team is heading. I think the game has passed Marv.

31) Chicago- Justin Harrell

Insurance for Tank. The Bears defense works with power upfront clearing the way for those great LB's. Harrell would be a nice option here for the NFC champs.

32) Indy Colts- Michael Griffin

Lose Doss and draft his replacement. Griffin is a nice player who will fit in the Dungy defense nicely. I think he'll go earlier but couldn't find a great fit. If Samuels doesn't get traded I could see NE taking Griffin earlier to replace the aging Harrison but in this scenario I see him ending up here.

Since points are awarded for the correct team, then if, hypothetically, a contest program was developed, people would need to be able to switch up the default order with any teams they want?

Yes. I have great respect for your programming prowess, so have fun with that.
