Felix Jones & Marion Barber....who will get more carries? (1 Viewer)

felix is an excellent guy to touch the ball 10 times or less per game. He just hasnt proven that he can do more and stay healthy. Choice and Barber are better NFL runnings backs because they do all of the little things.
I can totally agree with the injury angle. Felix has to prove he's durable. I think the injury issue is overblown by some people, but I don't think it's irrelevant either. Can you clarify what the little things are? And if that statement is true, why did Felix get the lead role in the playoffs, arguably the most important time to have your best players on the field? Do you have any quotes from the coaches where they say Felix is a liability in an area? Any indication that they feel Choice is the better RB of the two?

I have no problem giving Jones props as an athlete and RB with huge upside but to date he has been all hype and no substance. I wish for once you would at least acknowledge that instead of just making excuses for it.
:stirspot: I'm pretty sure there is some substance to Jones' hype... like the playoff game in Philly.

I'm not sure I understand where the "making excuses" comment comes from... I don't see injuries as an excuse, they are reason. Maybe my definition of excuse is different than yours... I take excuse to be something without basis, but maybe we see it differently

Not trying to argue here....
Call it what you want.He had a fine game vs. Philly but it's one game my friend. Timmy Smith put up 204 yards in the Super Bowl, so what's your point?

Ultimately the argument for how talented Felix is bears little substance if the guy can't put together 16 game seasons of consistent performance.

Playoff stats last year

vs Philadelphia

Jones 16 carries, 148 yards, TD, 1 rec, 30 yards. 17 touches, 178 yards over a 10 yard per touch average.

Barber 3 rushes, 4 yards.

Choice 14 rushes, 42 yards, TD. 1 rec, 6 yards. 15 touches, 48 yards. Just over a 3 yard per touch average

vs Minny

Jones 14 rushes, 69 yards. 3 rec, 22 yards. 16 touches, 91 yards.

Barber 8 rushes, 14 yards.

Choice 1 rush, 1 yard.

totals

Jones 33 touches, 269 yards, TD.

Barber 11 touches, 18 yards.

Choice 16 touches, 49 yards, TD.

This just complements the fact that Felix had the best YPC average on the team. Sure he is injury prone, but when healthy there is plenty of substance to the hype.

Barber's only put together 16 games in 2 seasons out of 5 so far, Westbrook rarely played all 16, Steven Jackson never plays 16... of course Jones missed most of his rookie season, and two games this past year. But I wouldn't say his hype ha no substance based on that.I guess we're just looking at things differently, that's cool.

He won't last 16 games with more than 10-12 touches per game.

There I said it. Barber will again be the lead dog in town. And less we forget Barber tore his quad last season and before that tear he was on a rampage. He was never the same back after that injury.

Crazy thing is Choice is there most consistent back when given the opportunity. I really like Choice once Barber is gone as this teams feature back. I don't think Felix is a feature back in this league. His speed is a gift but also a curse. He runs full tilt and get's hit hard and he runs too straight up. His running style (like Barbers for that matter) is not condusive to a full season health. Part of the art of staying healthy in the league is how you run. And of course good old luck play a role.

Jones: 540 yards and 3 TDs per season.Barber: 1043 yards and 8 TDs per season (1227 yards & 8 TDs over the last two years).I won't argue that Barber is more talented than Jones but he definitely has provided more substance. This isn't to say Jones won't perform ever just that, to date, he has not performed.

Meh, If we're cherry picking games then Jones hasn't even been as productive as Timmy Smith.Smith:@ Chi: 16 touches, 66 yardsvs. Min: 13 touches, 72 yardsvs. Den: 23 touches, 213 yards, 2 TD52 touches, 351 yards, 2 TDs

FTR As a football fan I would love to see Jones finally put it all together. He can be really fun to watch.

I just doubt he has any chance at long term career viability as a bell cow back.

If we're going to cherry pick, you are using 3 games' stats for Smith versus 2 games for Jones. On averages, Jones has outproduced. His prorated stats would be 404 yards, 1TD. :)

Bottom line is, both Barber and FJones don't need 20+ touches a game to be effective. Both are decent flex plays, but I wouldn't want to rely on either if my #2 rb goes down. Both have a fair amount of risk and a pretty modest ceiling.

Right now all this back and forth on Choice is fanboy wanking, which we've seen time and again in fantasy football over players like Kevan Barlow and William Green. Choice is worth drafting in a redraft league as speculative depth, nothing more.

To be 100% honest, I don't have a freaking clue what the split will be.

I wouldn't be surprised for Felix to have 18-125 and I wouldn't be surprised to see him have 3-8.

I think it will vary greatly week to week and will drive MBIII/Felix owners crazy.

thats a good point. felix can have ANY kind of fantasy day and that is the frustrating thing with him. he can break any one to the house from anywhere on the field. problem is he can come up limp on any of those runs. i will never say marion can do the things felix can do but barber WILL outproduce him on a game by game basis due to the goalline carries.now in regards to last season playoffs, marion was hurt from the start of the season. as the season wore on it was obvious he just didnt have the burst on GL duties. i remember him being stopped at the one where the normal marion would NEVER be denied the TD. healthy marion has a nose for the endzone and right now we have a healthy marion.side note: choice is the backup for marion not felix. he does all the things marion does but younger and fresher legs. one day, maybe next season it will be his show with felix.side side note: columbo will play, kosar will not. Oline will be fine sunday night..

CAR YDS AVG TD LGM. Barber 8 39 4.9 0 12F. Jones 8 38 4.8 0 11T. Choice 5 18 3.6 0 8what a mess
Agreed. They both carry value if the offense gets it together. If not, they're flex plays at best.
Even if the offense gets it together, if they split 37-37-26 none have value... they'd need to run it like 40 times a game. It's great for the Cowboys, not so great for FF. I stand by my thinking that this is the year that Jones shifts into the "starter" role, and Barber back to the "closer" role... it would have happened sooner had Jones not gotten injured. Which of course means that this year as well, an injury could derail the plan.Ah heck... I should have just bolded "what a mess" and posted a "good posting" emoticon LOL.

At this point it probably doesn't matter who's getting more carries. The Cowboys can't run the ball and/or won't make a commitment to running the ball. They've played two close games and neither Barber nor Jones has stood out in either game. From a fantasy perspective, I'm not sure either one is even a worthy RB3 at this point.

As big of a fan as i am of Jones, this is probably right. I am not a big fan of full blown RBBC, it doesnt give one back a chance to get into a groove.

neither back is worth starting right now.

ive got MB in 2 leagues he's been on my bench and will stay there until the Cowboys can consistently run the ball. not holding my breath.

Both backs just about ran for 5 yards a carry today. Dallas just isn't comitted to running it, like you said. In my opinion that is the problem with the Dallas offense so far. They are not setting up pass with the run.

I have to agree... it kills me that not only do they not let any of the RBs get going, but they seem to use them all wrong.Dallas isn't going to win without a commitment to running the ball. What was it, 16 carries between Barber and Felix last week, 18 this week? That's usually the bottom limit for ONE RB to carry the ball. Garrett, as an ex-QB who was stuck as a backup, is trying to live through Romo, so he's having Romo pass a ton, instead of running an offense based on the team's strengths IMO.

:goodposting: I'd like to trade Felix Jones and hold on to Marion Barber but I feel like I won't get much for Jones even though he has a TON of potential.

What? Barber 11-31-0Jones 7-7-0I see math is not your friend. :wall:
Maybe he was thinking of last week :goodposting: 'Cuz this week Dallas sucks at running the ball, period.

I do think the strength of the offense is getting the ball to Austin and Bryant in the passing game. Austin is a stud and Bryant looks like he's going to be one. That said, you do need to run the ball and present the threat of the running game. And it's not like Barber and Jones lack talent. Both can be effective backs. But right now it's just a mess. The fact that each of the first two games was close and neither one stood out (though I thought Jones showed a little something when he got some touches against the Redskins) has to lead one to wonder if this situation is going to be fixed. The only way I can see Barber or Jones having meaningful fantasy value at this point is if one of them gets injured. Even then, you'll still have Choice in the picture.

No they had 3 or less yds per carry. Anyways Im wondering how much influence Jerry has in pushing this team to be a passing team given he may finally be happy with his WR core.. Barber is killing me so far and may cost me a win this week. Either way Id bet that Barber continues to get more carries but between the both of them there will be < 20 total so its worthless anyways untill an injury to 1.

Felix looks noticeably slower to me this year. Speed and shiftiness were his chief attributes and hes lost a lot of both imo.
I thought week 1 he looked good, but week 2 was abysmal. I don't think he looks slower, rather indecisive. The OL looked like crap both weeks, and while Barber will just run into a non-existent hole, Jones tries to make something out of nothing, and gets caught behind the line deciding. Frankly, until they fix the OL and the playcalling neither RB is going to look good. The funny thing in watching the first two games is, for as much as the Cowboys passed, the defenses both seemed more concerned about stopping the run. What does that say about the opponents view of Romo?

Felix Jones is a gadget player plain and simple that gets injured quite frequently. Look at his history.Week 1 @ Wash - 64 total yds, no TD'sWeek 2 @ Chicago - 19 total yds, no TD'sNon-Impressive to say the least. He won't make it half way through the season without being injured for a 2-4 week span.

Anyone else getting the feeling that Dallas is going to run the ball a ton Sunday?
Try? Yes.More likely they will try to run early, get impatient after they gain only 10 or so yards on 5 carries, abandon the run, attempt 3 passes out of every 4 plays and end up with around 18-22 total team carries.Or something like that.

The Cowboys should go back to what was working for them the last time they won a game.
What did they do then?I can't remember that far back.
Probably a good thing to forget for an Eagles fan. The last 2 wins were week 17 and playoff slaughtering of the Eagles.
:missing: (Full disclosure, even as an Eagles fan, I drafted both Jones and Barber. I'm waiting on them to do something too).

Felix Jones was getting used as the primary back. Maybe i am just being biasd to the guy i like the best, but the Cowboys should pick one of the backs, and use them as a #1. I think it should be Jones, but even if its Barber, i think the team will be better off than this full blown RBBC.

Right now...I think Choice might be their best RB and give them their best chance to win.

I own Felix BTW.

Switz,Interesting point about Romo. I think you are on to something, but I also think Romo has established himself over the first two games, that if you don't respect him, he will make things happen through the air. I understand they are 0-2, but as a QB/team, if you continue to put up 300+ yards through the air, you will win games. The line is an absolute mess, but I have to think that Dallas will try to force the run this week and get back to what has been successful. If that fails in week 3, Romo will make the defense pay and if they win because of it, eventually the defensive "heat" will be off the running game and Barber/Jones will have some room. It is funny to think about in that we are all waiting for a race to start (barber vs. jones) and neither can get out of the starting blocks.I own one in two separate leagues (yes, hedging my bets) and would like to see at least one of them get a chance to establish themselves. i think at this point this is a bigger issue than Barber vs. Jones (and even vs. Choice)...this is about whether they can eve run for 100 yards collectively in a game.

Maybe. :wink:Call me crazy, but I think they'll come out and try to run the heck out of it. Even if they're unsuccessful. All of that hinges on getting a few stops of course.

Barber and Jones could be decent flex plays this week. The Cowboys are 0-2 and know they need to get it going on the ground. They should make a major effort to stick to it.

If they get rolling on the ground early and if they manage to hold the Houston offense in check then I agree. Then again if "if" and "but" were candies and nuts my grandmother would be a wagon.

Or something like that.
