From start to finish, Hereditary absolutely does not let up and never gives the audience a chance to decompress. It's one of the most relentless movies I've seen in a long time. I love the way that we eventually learn that all of these characters were just NPCs in somebody else's story. It's great for re-watching. Everything about it is great.
Just missed the cut for me. It was ok.
One of the few movies in the last 20 years that actually scared me.
This was the main one I wanted to rewatch for this and was dreading. Relentless is a great word for it, and IMO this is the best horror movie in decades. I ended up buying the 4k and watching it 4x since then.
Watching an older Damien kill his cousin by causing him to have a brain aneurism really ****ed me up badly as a young child.
Has the most shocking scene in horror, IMO. Brilliant film, but not sure I want to watch it again.
It was on my leftover list after my 75. I liked it but didn't think it was great.
That and the doctor getting sliced in half in the elevator by that runaway wire.

I haven't seen this but since it was so highly ranked, I just watched. It was too slow for me and then just got weird. Would it make my top 75? Probably but barely.
Yeah, it plays as much as a traumatic family drama as anything else. I think this is the reason why so many non-horror fans like it. The weirdness makes way more sense on rewatches and adds to the brilliance, IMO.
Imo, that is Aster's brilliance. Same thing with Midsommer, it takes more than one watch to see/get more of the movie.
My wife and I re-watched this last night. I should have rated it a little higher. The cinematography is great, and the kid who plays Damien is genuinely creepy. The first third or so of the movie is really good. The problem is that this film really slows down when Damien is off stage, and there's a fairly long section in the middle of the movie where I feel like it loses momentum. Still, I dinged it too much for that on my first pass.
First horror movie I ever saw in a theater unless you count Jaws as horror. Watched it this past Halloween and thought it held up well.
People who know film better than me can say more about this, but films from the 1970s just have a certain look about them, and they set up their shots in a relaxed, patient manner. Watching this last night, my wife and I both agreed that if you just looked at a few random scenes with the sound turned off, knowing nothing about the plot of the film, this could be a 1970s-era drama, police procedural, mystery, political thriller, or high comedy. Each shot is allowed to breathe. There are no sudden jump cuts. No drone shots. Everything looks natural, as if it were filmed on location (it probably was, for all I know). We need to bring this look back.
I don't think anybody around here would be crazy enough to do that.
I agree that it hasn’t aged well, but I thought I was so cool at the time because I was just 13 and me and my cousin the same age were the only kids in school that had seen this in theaters. An enduring experience for young hags.
The cemetery scene with the Rottweilers and the Israel scene with the ancient wall, in particular, are spectacular IMO.
This is the first movie I can remember in theaters where the twist at the end really got me.
It's cheaper to CGI everything these days, and the result is that quality has suffered.
Pretty sure i posted this thought, but I recently rewatched Rosemary's Baby and I thought a lot about Hereditary.
Going back to the discussion of cinematography from years past, this film has it in droves. Just a spectacular piece of work.
Yes, and it's another thing that I really like about both of Aster's movies. He is very obviously drawing inspiration from older, well-known films and putting his own spin on them. It feels like he is inviting the viewer to make exactly these sorts of connections. And he's doing this with movies (Rosemary's Baby, The Wicker Man) that are already intelligent films. He's not going through the bargain bin looking for half-baked ideas that he can elevate. He's using top-shelf material as his own personal springboard.
The zombies might not, but the reason I still really like Romero flicks is zombies are a bit besides the point. It's the characters and situations that make the early 2 worth the watch.
That and the zombie on the lawn chewing on Tom's (or Judy's) severed arm - like John Madden consuming a turkey leg - has always stuck with me.
And that high-pitched screeching sound of her mom as she was being stabbed is still really creepy.
Not only does it make my #1 horror movie but it makes my #1 movie of any kind. Until seeing it, all I knew were the Saturday morning monster movies. My parents let me stay up to watch it and I'm sure my Dad caught hell for allowing it. Not only did I have extremely intense zombie nightmares that night but they actually started all up again the next night...and I loved it! Every week, when the TV Guide came out, I would flip through it hoping to see it was on again. There's no movie I have seen more times. I still enjoy the rare times I have zombie dreams. lol
I have 10 left in my top 50 and as expected, I think that one won't make it but the rest will.
Love this. My #1 hasn't come up yet, but I had the exact same traumatizing reaction to that one when I saw it as a kid.
Amazingly I kept this off my top 75 which is mind blowing.

That's like me and The Omen. Although I wouldn't have had it as high as 13, it was an omission by oversight, not intention.
Mine:
I had worked on a list to submit right before you started this, but once I hit around 55 or so, I decided it would be a struggle to go to 75. Anyway, I didn't arrange them in an order at the time, but this movie was in my top 10 when I wrote them down, and it would have stayed in my top 10 if I had ordered them properly.
I told my friend she needed to check his scalp for 666. I still wonder about him...
