FFA Top 200 Horror Movies of All Time: #1 - Alien (10 Viewers)

TBH, Get Out is the only Jordan Peele movie that i actually liked. I was deeply disappointed in Us and Nope. Not quite a Shyamalanian level of disappointment, but quite a bit of disappointment nonetheless.

I wrote about His House in another thread and I liken it to the movie Jordan Peele has been wanting to make since Get Out. To be clear, he isn't attached to this movie but it has the deep social commentary tied to horror of both the mind and spirit that he strives for in his films. This one is just better all around as it has flow and meaning from an organic standpoint. It's moving and deep and very tense and creepy.

And I am pretty sure I'm not spotlighting( I hope)

I liked Us but not nearly as much. Seemed like it got bogged down by its own concept - simplifying things would have made it much better. Nope got a nope from me, thumbs down

#29 - The Witch

Love The Witch! Such an interesting setting and so well done down to the language and sensibilities of those days. Every member of the family has depth so you can't help but make attachments which sometimes bites you in the back. The denouement brings the chills in a big way, imo. Well crafted, written and filmed movie with a good story and strong characters.

This one has a lot going for it. It looks gorgeous. The characters are well-written. It's a simple concept executed very well. I also really like the fact that the entire story can be interpreted in several radically different ways.

This is another one to shoot to the top of your watchlists if you havent seen it. This movie is on many fans' found footage Mt. Rushmore, myself included.

Outside of the found footage element, it's a great zombie movie on it's own. And the last 5-10 minutes make it one of the scariest endings in horror of the last 20 years. It does everything a found footage and a zombie movie should do right.

Disappointing start to the day with Get Out so high up, but the group totally redeemed themselves with The VVitch and [rec] being higher. ;)

Get Out I didn't give a thought to being in my top 75, and the other two were very highly rated.

Eggers and Aster put a lot of thought and research into the details and look of their movies, and it shows. I can't think of anybody else currently I would have have direct a horror movie than those two.

I remember a customer getting mad about The Witch at the store and complaining because it was dumb, boring, and you didn't see the witch. :oldunsure:

I think one of the reasons I like found footage and this one in particular is because they have a way of lulling you a bit as not much happens for awhile. For me, this is #1 with a bullet for the genre. There are a lot of WTF is going on moments as this ramps up, and as you said the last 10mins scared the crap out of me.

I hold Blair Witch in high regard, but I will admit a bit of that is because I saw it opening night in the theater. That is one of my favorite theater experiences. Rec would be one, and The Taking of Deborah Logan would be one if I had to decide right now. 4th I would have to think about more or do some rewatches.

ETA: I guess 3rd I might have to think about as well, as I am not 100% sure if I would include Blair Witch in my personal top 4 if I could only decide on 4.

I just find his movies to be uneven, but with good cores of ideas. A few really good scenes, but I don't click with the humor and find he leans on delivering the message a bit too much. Get Out was the best overall, and the scene in Nope with the baboon is scary as hell though.

My Mt. Rushmore is probably

Blair Witch Project - Hasn't aged well, many subsequent movies did it better but you can't deny this movie catapulted the subgenre into the mainstream.
Taking of Deborah Logan - Just an example of a near perfect found footage movie.
[REC] - Ditto
Paranormal Activity - Fairly groundbreaking for "hidden cam" found footage. Scary AF too.

Speaking of Blair Witch....

Get Out was groundbreaking, which played a role it it making my Top 75 (but not quite Top 50). [rec] was my unofficial #77 and 2nd alternate if some of my originals hadn't qualified. The VVitch is on a whole other level IMO and made my Top 10 - I didn't mind the slow burn as it developed the characters and extremely unique setting well, even nailing the unusual (for us) dialect, taken from among the very first ever audio recordings. It definitely and deservedly springboarded Anya Taylor-Joy's career (who I really like in a lot of other works but nothing has topped this one, regardless of genre). Loaded with creepiness and unforgettable imagery. If anything, I may have underrated this at #9.

Absolutely, but things went downhill after that opening scene. It's basically a curse for a movie to have such a great start and then be merely ordinary from there.

Let's Rock!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! My #1 and the movie I have repeatedly watched more than any other on my list. While not as "horror" as the original, it still holds up extremely well, has a superb cast and Sigourney Weaver is an absolute bad ***.

Watch this maybe once a year. To me it's about as perfect as a movie can get. Rewatchability & quotability is off the charts, set pieces are fantastic, James Horner slaying the soundtrack. You can have Godfather II as the greatest sequel of all time, my vote goes to Ripley & co.

I had none of these on my top 75.

I did enjoy and still like Get Out. But once you know the story it does lose some of it’s edge. But it’s a very good horror movie and the only Peele movie I like.

I did enjoy The Witch. It’s a great period piece and extremely well acted. I need to watch it again.

I incredibly have still not seen REC. It is high on my must see list.

Obviously I love it too!! #4 on my top 75 and arguably I could make it #1

Perfect Organism errr movie.

All the characters in Blair Witch should be thankful they were killed in the woods as it was going to happen to them sooner or later. Stupid, irritating and sniveling is no way to go through life, someone was bound to take them out to put them out of their, and our, misery. I cheered for the witch.

I am with him on this one. 100% sci-fi action.

Sorry but this take doesn't make sense to me. Just because there's guns, it doesn't take away the tension that is present, the monsters are still there (there's even more of them!) and like I said, it has body horror elements galore just like the first one.

Scenes that make it horror: Ripley's chestburster dream scene, Ripley and Newt trapped with a facehugger in the locked room, the revelation of the swarm of Aliens in the vents, the shot of the alien slowly rising from the water behind Newt, and many more. This movie was absolutely shot with a good mix of action and the horror elements that made the first film so great.

The Blair Witch Project.

So I was part of that incredible build up hype machine.....bought into it hook line and sinker and that made the theater experience of seeing this genre ground breaking film.

But after that.......it was over. It really has no rewatch ability what so ever. There are so many other far better found footage flicks out there.

But you had to experience that initial release, during the months leading up to it’s theatrical debut to truly grasp and appreciate it’s effect on the genre. It was pretty awesome.

I think this ranking is way way too high though. It’s really not a great horror movie that has absolutely not stood the test of time.

[REC] below Blair Witch is painful.

Aliens rocks. The people in the walls saying Kill me… horror.

Something I realized last time I watched it is that Hudson’s really good at his job. When he pulls up a terminal, he’s all business.

I get it, we don't agree. Remember, I simply was coming at it from a video store standpoint. I have never seen some of these in horror and wouldn't consider a few on this list horror in that situation.

In this case I fall back to the overall tone of the movie, and especially when I can think of a slam dunk horror that is just like it (or in this case in the same series). I have seen both tons of times and you wouldn't be able to convince me Alien and Aliens belong in the same section.

Yeah, that's fine. I just think the video store standpoint is a little limiting because it means a movie can only be one genre, which just isn't the case.

I think for Alien/Aliens, Alien is a horror movie in a sci-fi setting, Aliens is an Action/Sci-Fi in a horror setting. Both are sci-fi. Both are horror. But each leans a bit more one way than the other.

May I ask what you found groundbreaking from Get Out?
The protagonist begins the film on edge, because he is going to meet his white girlfriend's parents for the first time, at their posh home. He learns she hasn't told them that he's black because they wouldn't care about such things, but that understandably heightens his anxiety. This is an element that is immediately understandable but one I can't say I've ever seen in a horror movie. With that backdrop, he arrives in this very white environment. There are other black people around, but something seems very off about them, yet he can't really decipher what. As things seem to get weirder and weirder, he does second-guess himself as he understands he brings in the initial anxiety to the situation that no one else seems to have.

This seems to blend the elements of Guess Who's Coming to Dinner with Rosemary's Baby, as odd as that sounds, but does so very well. The villains are these pseudo-liberal white people that appear friendly and welcoming, not at all one-dimensional racists like the ones led by Kiefer Sutherland in A Time to Kill. But because they are not in-your-face threats, it's even more gradually unsettling. He is subject to several questionable remarks and witnesses unusual actions but feels compelled to let them all slide. The power dynamics at play (white/black, parents/prospective son-in-law, affluent/working class) all keep him from acting on his impulses until it's almost too late and they are on the verge of taking him over completely. Unique to horror films yet the broad strokes are relatable to anyone who's accustomed to being on the flip side of the power imbalance on a regular basis. In that sense, it is a groundbreaking film.
