Almost perfect horror movie
From start to finish, Hereditary absolutely does not let up and never gives the audience a chance to decompress. It's one of the most relentless movies I've seen in a long time. I love the way that we eventually learn that all of these characters were just NPCs in somebody else's story. It's great for re-watching. Everything about it is great.

One of the few movies in the last 20 years that actually scared me.

This was the main one I wanted to rewatch for this and was dreading. Relentless is a great word for it, and IMO this is the best horror movie in decades. I ended up buying the 4k and watching it 4x since then.

The acting is awesome and fact that this was a directorial debut is shocking. A rewatch is so rewarding to catch all the people, clues, and symbols in the background. Maybe debate about if we every really even met a character (do we need to avoid spoilers here?). Hell just to watch the miniatures and the transitions between those and the set. There is so much work, research, and love poured into this movie.

I had it at #3.

Has the most shocking scene in horror, IMO. Brilliant film, but not sure I want to watch it again.

I haven't seen this but since it was so highly ranked, I just watched. It was too slow for me and then just got weird. Would it make my top 75? Probably but barely.

Yeah, it plays as much as a traumatic family drama as anything else. I think this is the reason why I've been surprised that so many non-horror fans like it. The weirdness makes way more sense on rewatches and adds to the brilliance, IMO.

I'm not going to assume who got what, but I for sure didn't put together some of the pieces and what was going on until after the fact. It's basically like we are watching the final week of something that's been playing out for decades.

Imo, that is Aster's brilliance. Same thing with Midsommer, it takes more than one watch to see/get more of the movie.

I just saw this again about a year ago after a long hiatus. I came away kind of disappointed - this one didn't hold up as well as I thought it would have. Still, it's a classic and it belongs on the list, just not this high IMO.

Edit: LOL in other words, the opposite of what @Scoresman just said. To be fair though, I remembered this film exactly the way he described. It was just tamer than I remembered.
My wife and I re-watched this last night. I should have rated it a little higher. The cinematography is great, and the kid who plays Damien is genuinely creepy. The first third or so of the movie is really good. The problem is that this film really slows down when Damien is off stage, and there's a fairly long section in the middle of the movie where I feel like it loses momentum. Still, I dinged it too much for that on my first pass.
