Oh man, there are some awesome movies waiting for you. I got the Arrow bluray of Audition from the library the other day, so I am going to pop that in on my rainy day off today. I also grabbed the 4k disc of what I assume is #1 on the countdown, so I watched that last night. I'm going to have stare at my top 15 and think about it more. I had it at 4, but I can't shake the feeling that I have replaced it at the tippy top of my list with other movies - like Let the Right One In, Hereditary, and [rec]. Anyway, can't wait for some reactions when people get to great movies they haven't yet because of this thread.

Somehow ran across VIY and read up a little( a real little) and its sounds pretty dang good. See there is a 2014 remake of sorts but I'm going to give this one a try first Anyone seen or heard of this before?

This was the first movie I saw where I understood the phrase "makes my skin crawl."

I haven’t seen Hereditary. Wife watched it without me years ago and I haven’t felt like watching on my own. I’ll get to it. Same with Midsommer I caught the last 30 minutes or so

Agree and I hate it. Don’t like that movie at all, never want to see it again. I wish it didn’t exist lol.

I'm not there but I'm the outlier among those who had it on their lists, as I have it down at #70. I get that it's groundbreaking and I think it needs to be seen, but with all the great horror films that now exist, I find it more iconic than high-quality. I won't knock others that rate it higher, as I acknowledge its griminess, weird villains and implicit gore (as little actual gore is shown), including the chainsaw sounds, which convey pure terror.

:goodposting: This is exactly what I would go on and on about for why I have it rated so high. This movie just absolutely clicks with me on a visceral level. I probably rewatch it every couple of years.

In some ways, a movie that disgusts you so much you never want to see it again could be the ultimate compliment for a horror movie. Those are the ones I seek out to watch when I hear about them.

Yeah for sure and I get why people would think it’s great. It just sickens me and I feel gross after seeing it.

I’ve never seen TCM. Maybe will keep it that way based on some of the comments.
I have never seen it either. I just worry about going back to something that long ago that the technology/look of it will detract so much that it ends up just cheesy and not good.

Yeah, disgust is never my hope when I go see a film. Often, I feel that a horror movie will aim to disgust only if it cannot genuinely terrify. Admittedly, TCM does both

No. This movie holds up brilliantly. It has no special effects that I can think of. You could put it up on a drive-in right now and it would look just as good as it did in the 70s. It's a grainy, low-budget movie, but that's part of the vibe.

Yep, that’s what makes it perfect

There's a reason this is the original summer blockbuster. The heir to creature-features like King Kong and Godzilla but more terrifying because great white sharks do exist and do eat people when they can. Brilliant pacing makes you fear the shark long before he's shown on-screen. The mishmash of personalities set out to sea to save the town gives the movie great depth and tension. And the monologue by Robert Shaw referencing the real-life events of the U.S.S. Indianapolis may be the best soliloquy in all of horror films.

There's a little dive bar near me called "The Bitter End" ... not so far from where the movie was filmed. They have a nautical theme and they play the Jaws movie on a loop.
Anytime there's a lull in conversation, just look up and you're entertained.

My Dad took me and my brother to see Jaws on the opening weekend. I was 11 at the time. He was definitely not prepared for the line and I remember moments where he wanted to leave but thankfully he stuck it out. One of my favorite movie experiences ever. Such a great, fun movie. It never did really freak me out about going in the water though. We would go to Rockaway Beach or Jones Beach all the time.

Jaws was the first book I ever read for just the heck of it. I was then able to utilize it for book reports in 9th, 10th, and 11th grade. In 10th grade it was an oral presentation of the book report in front of the class and my buddy was in the back of the room using his arms to simulate a "chomp" the entire time I was speaking. I almost lost it a few times.

next time y'all watch Jaws, pay attention to how the color yellow is used: it's a precursor to a shark attack/sighting.

- guy throwing a stick to Pipet (the dog) has a yellow shirt
- the little Kitner boy was on a yellow raft
- Chief Brody's truck is yellow (when he shows up to find Chrissy Watkins' remains)
- the barrels Quint uses to hunt the shark
- the helicopter patrolling the beach is yellow
- flashlight Hooper is holding when he finds Ben Garder's head (and shark tooth "the size of a shot glass") is yellow

Jeesh.....spoiler alert. You tell us to pay attention and then give away all the sightings. Just ruined it. Drop the movie to #197
