First year playing fantasy baseball (1 Viewer)

So im playing in my first fantasy league, for real this time. I never could stay focused in the free leagues for 162 games. I figure I will try it out this year and at least this will pass the time till football starts back up. So basically we roster 20. Start 8 positions and a UTIL. Also start 3 SP, 2 RP and a wilcard(one RP or SP) This is not head to head.

Basically there are 14 categories

Offensive(avg, obp, hr, sb, rbi, K,runs)

Pitching(era, whip, k, wins, saves, Complete games, Shut outs)

I think the last two pitching categories are garbage, but I digress.

So basically, there are 14 teams, if you are first in a category, thats 14 points, if you are last, thats 1.

so 14 possible points, at 14 categories is 196 total points(if you were first in every category)

What is this league? is it rotiserre?(sp?) I know it isnt head to head. Just never knew if anyone has played in one before.

The question I have is, how do you catch up in some of these categories. I am last in saves because I do not have a pure closer. DO i try and trade for one, or just say forget it, seeing as I have only 3 saves and the top team has like 18?

Thanks guys, this board is the only place I come for information, partially because I dont really know what kinda of league I am in, I just know you guys are pretty good when it comes to baseball knowledge.

This is a roto league...

Also, post your roster, that would help...

But if you don't have a true closer, I would tank that category (since you can't go down anymore) and work on your WHIP/ERA totals...

I am not a fan of carrying bench bats in roto leagues, I would drop at least 2 of those guys and get pitching help.

CGs and Shutouts are pretty valuable when a league scores them, because they are so rare, and the stats that go into making a CG SHO are also valuable in W, ERA, WHIP and so forth. You might want to target a SP that has the proven ability to go the distance.

The above poster may be correct about forgetting about saves. If you forget about them, then I would for sure try and get an SP with the ability to go the distance and score you CG SHOs.

I think overall your lineup is stronger than your pitchers.

The thing with roto baseball, you can always catch up :) Just pay attention to what's going on. Hot streaks and cold streaks are key, and selling high and buying low is also very important. Combine these 2 ideas to target underperformers, and pay for them with overachievers.

Waiver wire/FA pickups can help you too, moreso than in football IMO.

Great list here. Look for guys on the younger side in that list. Someone like a CC Sabathia could be golden for you. I just traded for Matt Cain in my league for this very reason.

Could any of my bench players get a workhorse pitcher though? I dont think a JJ hardy and dimitri young would be enough for sabathia. how would you approach it?
