Food - How much do you waste? (1 Viewer)

I live alone and like to cook.  Unfortunately, it is impossible to shop for one person.  I end up throwing away a ton of food.  I swear it would be easier for me just to eat out everyday.
I waste a ton of food at home for this reason as well. It's just the wife and I, and I like to cook more than I really even care about eating. After a long day, I really just want to throw on a podcast, have a cold pop or 5, and cook something. It's how I unwind. There tends to be a lot of leftovers (especially since my belly's pretty full of beer by the time the food is ready), and we just can't eat it all. Then, I'm guilty of cooking something new even when there are plenty of leftovers because cooking something new is just more fun.

Also, at the restaurant, of course there's just going to be a certain amount of waste. We try to limit it of course, but it happens and is often necessary.

I have an employee who is a hard core "don't waste that" person. Wrong order gets made, "oh don't waste that". While I just want to throw it away to get it the hell out of the way. Now, "don't waste that" means she's going to eat it. But she ain't just going to eat that. She's going to add in about 5 other far more expensive items and then spend the next 30 minutes eating it. In my mind, not throwing it away immediately leads to far more wasted money.

Not as much as I used to.  Produce is the tough one, but we compost so it gets a use other than consumption.

When I cook , we hardly ever waste food cause I will always bring the leftovers into work.  When my wife cooks different story kids barely eat their food, and that's why we have dogs, although sometimes they won't eat it either.
I'm guessing your wife does not know about FBGs

This is exactly how i feel.  I typically cook all day Sunday -  make all my stocks, gravy, red chili, fire up the smoker, etc.  It is actually relaxing for me.  Now i just need more people to eat it!

there are always shelters/pantries/kitchens/etc. that would love to reap the benefits of your culinary zeal

One of my problems is that in general, I dislike leftovers. For the most part, I'd rather cook something new than eat leftovers, even if the meal was good. I build in a nite or two of leftovers each week, so they get eaten.

I will grill for me and the wife and lose all interest in eating after downing a 6 pack while cooking.
