Franchise players (1 Viewer)

So, after reading this article (link below), I noticed a significant difference between a franchise tagged Safety vs a CB. How does the league define the position for a player that plays both positions and say, the last year before the tag, actually played both positions (say started off as S and then played CB due to an injury on a team). Same thing between DE and DT....what if there is a player that plays DT on some passing downs and DE on normal downs or some form of rotation. The team would prefer to franchise tag him as a DT obviously. How does the league solve this problem? I can see this becoming a big deal one of these days when some player gets shafted ....

Also, on a similar note I wonder how would the league have managed this, hypothetically, if they had this system when players played all positions. For eg - a team decides to franchise tag George Blanda as a K instead of a QB

Tony Gonzales had a similar problem. He wanted to be considered as a WR and KC wanted to tag him as a TE. I don't remember how the determination was made. It is probably based on a percentage of plays played at each position to determine which one you are.
