Frankie Rodriguez (LAA) Pain in his side (1 Viewer)

Rotoworld reports Francisco Rodriguez has been pitching with pain in his side. If he goes on the DL, who slides into his closer role? I love that Angels lineup, and someone getting a two week shot at all the saves on that team would be worth a short term pickup.

So who it be? Dirtyhalos...you still out there?

K-Rod evidently has been pitching with pain in his ankle since last year.

Francisco Rodriguez (P)

4/7: Francisco Rodriguez continues to be bothered by an ankle injury. Make that two ankle injuries. The left joint still hurts from last year, and the right one is now ailing. "He tweaked it a couple of days ago, and we're going to look at it closely," manager Mike Scioscia tells the Los Angeles Times. "But it is a little sore." Rodriguez has yet to allow a run through three appearances, but he has walked three batters and thrown more balls than strikes.

k-rod is fine. the media whirl wind around this guy is downright comical. his ankle is a little tender. not to worry. k-rod is tough and he is in a contract year.

it would be shields and he is off the dl.......he pitched last night

I think Speier has the leg up on Shields for the closer role, Shields is better suited for setting up.

i wouldnt be giving up K-Rod for cheap, guys. Yes his ankle is tender but he will be ok. this guy is a warrior and loves to pitch., if anything, the few days off will help him in the long run. I wouldn't count on anyone else in the bullpen for quality and consistent saves because the angels will be more of a committee until k-rod is back. which will hopefully be this weekend, possibly early next week.

Blown save for Speier last night
One strike away and just missed the corner walking Asdrubal, Pronk took the next pitch deep. Glad my team's ERA and WHIP won't be punished as my speculative add didn't take effect until today but at least I know that Speier is first in line behind K Rod.

Not so sure this is true....although if I had to take a guess, I would pick Speier. I think he's just had the hot hand of late, but it wouldn't surprise me at all to see Shields get the nod if this were to be an ongoing deal. I don't think K-Rod is going to be out more than a few days, so we could see Speier, Shields and Oliver all get a chance to close out a game...although Oliver probably only if a few lefties were due up. Shields when healthy is the best option.

These things tend to linger, ankle problems on pitchers who rely on the leg/footwork that K Rod does is not good. It doesn't sound like he's going to the DL, but I'm thinking he probably should this will be something easy to re-aggrevate. While Shields is the better pitcher that does not necessarily mean he will be the closer, several teams are beginning to put the better more dominant pitcher (preferably ones with a high K rate) in the setup role, Cleveland and the Cubs are the most obvious cases but there are plenty of others too. I agree with this ideology, if Zumaya and Rodney were ever healthy I'd want them to be the 7th and 8th inning guys while Todd Jones remained as closer. Just throwing that out there...

Bottom 6 Angels up 6-4, Shields is warming up, probably for the 7th and 8th, looking like the Halos are planning on sending Speier out there to close again if the situation presents itself.

Jason Bulger sneak in here anywhere?
Who?
He's a middle guy in their pen that has had some success as a minor league closer.
He's just a guy at this point. You can't write him off completely because there have been cases where journeymen come out of nowhere to have success at a big league closer. But K-rod's injury would have to be serious and some other guys would have to fail before Bulger got a shot.

Angels: Bulger could close for Angels

The News

With K-Rod in a boot and nursing a sprained ankle, someone has to get the save opportunities for the Angels. Manager Mike Scioscia told MLB.com he would use the dreaded "closer committee," but the word on the street is that the LA skipper will lean on Jason Bulger .

Our View

The right-hander has experienced success at the highest level in the minors. At Triple-A Salt Lake last year he recorded 10 saves in 49 appearances and finished 23 games. Bulger struck out 81, walked 24 and posted an ERA of 3.76 in 52.2 innings pitched. If Bulger is available, especially those who own Rodriguez, make a bid for his services.

Salt Lake is a hitter's playground but other than the K/9 rate, that's not a very impressive line. But who am I to argue with the word on the mean streets of Anaheim :lmao:

hes been given the clear by medical staff and coacking staff to resume pitching. he was available last night but they lost 8-5.
