Free Agent market part 2 - Alan Faneca. (1 Viewer)

Scenario: Alan Faneca becomes a free agent in 2008. Whoever signs him, signs him for 4 years.

Question: For your favorite NFL team, what amount would be acceptable to sign him for?

State your team and the total dollar amount for the 4 year contract. A per season amount is fine also as is "zero"/"wont sign".

Salary Cap will be about 112 million in '08.

Closet Rams fan (they're my NFC team)...

Slightly more than anyone else  Man, this team needs to load up on any and all OL talent they can get and Faneca also seems like a good "leadership" guy. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he was an Offensive Captain for years for the Stillers, aye?

If I am the Rams, I go for O-Line and Defense. Will they ever learn their lesson? They go after Drew Bennett and Dante Hall in the offseason and draft Brian Leonard. Forget about more skill offensive players and focus on the important pieces.

Buffalo just (over)paid for Derrick Dockery and Langston Walker, so I don't see the Bills going after any more linemen in free agency. I do hope they spend at least one first day pick on an interior lineman though.

He'll be playing in a Chiefs uniform next season.Bank on it. :homer:

Cowboys fan; don't need him.

If I was a team that were, I would offer him a contract comparable to the one Leonard Davis got last year. He got a seven year deal with 18.75 mil guaranteed.

That seems about right for a top-tier NFL guard.

Seattle went after Dielman pretty hard and offered him more money than SD. It was raining the weeken Dielman visited and he decided to stay in SoCal. I doubt they'd throw as much at Faneca but I could see them making a move, their line is very young and they are fining it hard to replace Hutchinson from within. They'll make a play for some OL this offseason. Wouldn't bank on him signing in KC yet.

With the injuries they've had on the OL compounded by Dan Snyder's open wallet, I expect the Redskins to go after Faneca in the offseason and I won't be surprised if they get him.

As a Texans' fan, this is what I was thinking. Could argue he is worth more as he has been better with the Steelers than Davis was with the Cardinals.

FWIW his skills have been declining for the last 2 seasons already. I love the guy, but he's not quite as good as he was at his peak.

He's still damn good though.

4 yrs, 16 millionWelcome to Chicago big guy
 maybe in 2001 that would have been enough. That offer equates to 4 million a year the Leonard Davis deal is 7 years for 49 million or 7 million a year. I hardly think Faneca accepts half of what Leonard Davis makes.

You're correct about him declining. He's getting beat regularly on pass pro, and isn't getting movement at the point on runplays. He is still very good at pulling and hunting down LB'rs. Pitt is thin on the OL and they still won't pay him. Watch game film of Faneca and you'll understand why. He will be over paid wherever he goes.

Faneca tells Steelers he's gone after 2007

Associated Press

Friday, May 11, 2007

PITTSBURGH (AP) - All-Pro guard Alan Faneca is upset at the Steelers' contract extension offer, and said Friday he is determined not to play for Pittsburgh beyond this season.

Faneca, an All-Pro left guard every season but one since 2001, said he reported to the team's three-day minicamp only because it is mandatory and he could be fined for not attending. He didn't threaten to boycott the season, even though he has no contract protection beyond this year, but made clear his unhappiness.

"This will be my last year as a Pittsburgh Steeler," Faneca said.

Faneca, widely regarded as one the NFL's top offensive linemen, said the Steelers' only offer to him wouldn't have made him one of the league's 10 highest-paid guards. Faneca will make $4.375 million this season, including roster bonuses, in the final year of his current contract.

Faneca's criticism is nearly unprecedented for a player of his accomplishments in Pittsburgh. The Steelers usually re-sign their key players.

The Steelers did not immediately respond to Faneca's comments.

Faneca also said the club's decision to release former Pro Bowl linebacker Joey Porter sends a poor signal to other players only 15 months after the club won the Super Bowl.

"What are the guys in the room to think?" Faneca said, sweat still dripping off him after a two-hour practice. "If they can do it to me and everybody else and let Joey go and do things like that, what does that say to the rest of the guys?"

The team still could make a long-term offer to Faneca before the season starts in September, but he all but said he will not re-sign even if the Steelers offer an unexpectedly large contract.

I'm thinking my cardinals must be the front runners. Faneca wasn't thrilled about Grimm and Whiz being passed over in Pittsburgh. In addition to the established relationships, there is the positional need and the Bidwells have actually been much improved as of late in providing the resources needed to go out and sign key free agents. No slam dunk, but if i am making odds the cards have to be the favorite. as far as contract terms, i'd be surprised if it hit the leonard davis range. the steelers obviously didn't think he was worth leonard davis money when it came to negotiating an extension. that leads me to believe his true market value may be in the $22-$26 million dollar range for a 4 year contract.-FEDERAL

:tfp: Faneca is okay but has not played near the level he was two years ago. I think he has a couple good years left in him but won't be worth the kind of money that will be thrown his way. The Steelers are damn good at knowing a player's value and do not overpay, even if they are thin at that position (Joey Porter for example).Faneca has had a great career for the Steelers and we'll miss him but if he wants top 5 money it will be best for them both if they part ways after the season.

cleveland, not going after him.

not needed after spending 49 mil on steinbach and 36 mil on bentley the year before on interior linemen
