Frustrated Gates Owner (1 Viewer)

I just wish there was a decent tight end available on the ww in my league but I'm pretty much stuck with him.
I'm not using that excuse anymore. You could pick up a rookie backing up Ben Watson (to use one example from today) and do better. You could grab Pettigrew's backup, he spends most of his time in the slot. You could probably grab Allen or Chandler or Moeaki or Paulson - and in every instance, you would be upgrading.Just let the worthless #### go. Make your league one of the the 7% that don't own Gates. Biggest turd in FF this year.
Fair point. I'm gonna shoot for Lewis, houser, Clark, or paulsen
Was all set to add Rudolph, but that concussion has me spooked. Maybe Pitta? Not sure I trust him. Scratch that. I *am* sure I *don't* trust him.If I do end up dropping Gates, I will be sure to come back here and let you guys know, since that means he's a lock for 10/135/3 that week. Earlier in the year, I picked up Rudolph and benched Gates for one game -- which of course was his one decent game all season.

What's worse in watching the game it really looks like Gates is getting open he's just not getting targets as Rivers won't throw anything downfield. If Norv gets fired this week his owners have week 13 to wait and see and then maybe useful in the playoffs ... same story for Mathews I suppose.

I was buying Gates as a great value pick this year(luckily didn't draft him though), but it's very clear that he's lost a step or two and both he and Rivers are on the decline. Norv Turner isn't exactly the best HC either. The Chargers really need to shake things up on the offensive side of the ball this off-season.

Gates just isn't getting targets. All the defenses seem to just bracket cover him and take him out of the game. Can't blame them, it's worked. I'd look elsewhere.

Good point. Rivers isn't the type of qb to make risky throws and/or questionable decisions while trying to force the ball to his guys.

SD have nobody else that can beat you, so they double Gates or have that safety over the top on most plays.

I see a lot of frustration in this thread. I don't know if I would cut him unless I just had to but I can definitely see why people are looking for WW help. The Chargers are "blah" and sometimes you just have those years where it doesn't allow any of your guys to do anything (just ask the Fitz owners).

Overall, I think Gates might be the player that burned FF owners as about as much as anyone this year. I saw a lot of high compensation trades for him this year (people thinking they were addingt hat final piece for a run, often giving up high draft picks to rebuilding teams, etc).

That may be true, but it's also worth pointing out that, even as Alexander has emerged over the past few weeks, that hasn't helped open things up for Gates at all.

Hogwash. Malcolm Floyd is on pace for 1,000 yards, and Alexander has been tearing it up lately, so that excuse for Gates doesn't wash. He is simply not getting open enough to get the ball thrown to him.

2,4,5,3 targets? Yikes.

Gates' value has dropped because Rivers can no longer (or refuses to) pass over lbs in the middle of the field.

I guess Norv could adjust and just have Gates runs outs and hitches like Witten does...

Part of the issue is that the OL is horrible. Rivers doesnt have time.
And yet Floyd and Alexander have been able to produce. So, the OL is too horrible for the TE to produce, but not so horrible to where the WRs can't produce. Do I have that right? ;)
You have it right that with less time to throw, all receivers are hurt. And for a lumbering guy like Gates, quick separation seems more of a problem than in the past and certainly more of a problem relative to the younger WRs.

Yes, very good point. I don't get to watch the SD games so I hear different reasons for his fantasy regression, mainly either he's washed up now or that defenses are focusing on phasing him out, so it helps me make decisions about him in my dynasty league.

Almost every team is using bracket coverage on him. The only team that has tried to single cover him has been the Chiefs. They failed. Everyone else is pretty much using bracket coverage on him. Nothing has changed with the emergence of Alexander. Teams single cover our WRs who have had some nominal success.

With our piss poor pass protection and our long developing plays most teams feel they cAn get to Rivers before the WRs beat them. They have been right. With Gaither on IR for the season, nothing is going to change there. Sadly there will be no late season heroics this year.
